Dining in Middleburg

Recommended Posts

My beloved wants to take a drive out to Middleburg this Saturday, and stop for lunch in the town. I've been to the Red Fox Inn, but about 2 years ago for dinner. And 15 years ago I had lunch at the Coach Stop. OK, so I don't get out that way much. Has anyone been there recently, and what did you like or dislike out there?

My folks live in Middleburg, and usually elect to eat lunch at the Hunter’s Head (part of Sandy Lerner’s Ayrshire Farm complex), or the Blackthorne Inn, formerly the 1763. Both are a few miles west in Upperville. They have enjoyed a few meals at the French Hound on South Madison, but you’ll likely need a reservation there. For the wasteland that is Middleburg dining after the Aster closed, it’s the only place that I can recommend without feeling guilty about your afternoon.

Has anyone been to Upper Crust lately? This used to be my favorite place in the DC area for breakfast sandwiches (bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant mmmm), then it declined in quality for awhile, then recovered a bit, and now?

The following posts have been split into separate threads:

Rail Stop (RaisaB)
Iron Bridge Wine Company (RaisaB)
Hunter's Head Tavern (rappahannock)
The French Hound (Twinsdaddy)
Frogs and Friends (southdenverhoo)
Little Apple Pastry Shop (bioesq)
Back Street Cafe (shaggy)
Market Salamander (monavano)
Red Horse Tavern (monavano)
The Goodstone Inn (samsonsizzler)

Blackthorne Inn (bbq4me)

I agree with Raisa's recommendation of the Rail Stop if you feel like heading to The Plaines. Sticking with Middleburg, if you're just looking for somewhere pleasant to watch the people go by (the former Magpie's/McSomething or other's) the now Red Horse Tavern (112 Washington) is a decent casual spot with an outdoor deck. The menu is standard pub fare - we've enjoyed the salads and burgers in the past. If you want to stick around a little later, head to Market Salamander, pick up a picnic, head over to Great Meadow and watch some arena polo ($20/car) for the evening. If you head through Aldie on Route 50, the Aldie Country Store serves some great pulled bbq chicken and pork sandwiches (carryout only)!

Old thread I know but I wanted to add a shout out to the new Fox's Den Tavern in Middleburg. Reopened last year ((was Hidden Horse) and it is a lovely place, probably my new fave in Middleburg. Food is well done without being really imaginative. Always satisfying flavors, lovely friendly atmosphere, attentive wait staff and moderately priced compared to other Middleburg establishments. For a true experience there is Ashby Inn but when money is tight and I want a wonderful night out, this is the place.

Red Truck will be back open on May 1. They closed for a bit to avoid burnout. Middleburg Tennis Club is a private tennis club on Zulla Road.

Honestly, I don't love Hunters Head, but we eat there a fair bit because my kids enjoy it. It's fine if you stick with the staples (and in the old days, avoid the weekends).

Red Bar Sushi for lunch today. Honestly think they are the best restaurant in Middleburg proper, and have been for a while.

Good to know. We've been making the trip out there for many years usually for special occasions and definitely for the holidays.

Update: The Aldie Country Store was sold and completely renovated in the past 1-2 years. Nice, airy place with great breakfast foods and donuts (the maple bacon are already famous). Also in Aldie, since goldenticket posted this Brassica's came and went after a nice run but it is now a location of Greenheart Juice Shop (I think the Brassica's guy sells produce to them) and their juices and other concoctions, while far from cheap, are really something. Little Apple Pastry Shop also is still alive and well in Aldie, and the weekend market at Gilbert's Corners is crushing it -- Arno's Pastry, Pit Stop barbecue, the salsa guy, Wegmeyer Farms fresh made donuts, kettle corn, sometimes lobster rolls, sometimes ice cream, sometimes Greenheart is there too. Just a great little group of vendors. Fresh produce in season of course too.

Aldie store was sold three years ago, and totally de-loused. Very nice and clean space now. Brassicas has also been closed for two years - that was the original Middleburg Juice Company store, now merged with Greenheart, and they have stores in Aldie, Leesburg, Vienna, and Middleburg. Believe they have a DC outpost coming soon as well.

Greenheart also has a delivery service! In addition to their wonderful juices, I really like the cold brew with cashewmilk.

Upperville is going on this week - happy to meet for a drink if anyone from Dr will be out for the show (well, almost anyone). Some updates just in case:

- Common Grounds: Still closing at 2pm, still open at 6am - best coffee shop and gathering place in town.

- Upper Crust: Don, back to its former glory. Closing at 4pm, frustrating for Hill parents.

- King Street Oyster Bar: BANANAS since Upperville started. Be prepared to wait.

- Red Bar: Best restaurant in Middleburg right now (though it's a low bar) Specials are excellent.

- Red Fox: Pivoted to a four course tasting menu and "small bites". I get the sense that people may be dissuaded from going for fear of committing to a four course menu - worth noting that the "smal' bites" includes a 1/2 duck, crispy trout, or fried chicken, all of which are entree size. Sneaky good wine list as well,(anyone geeky enough to pour Biggio Hamina by the glass is cool with me) with some aged bottles.

- Hunter's Head: Unspeakably bad. New menu change, which the kitchen can't execute. They'll still be packed all week though.

I suspect this is about me.  😬  That's unfortunate as I just relocated to Linden and am looking for new, local adventures!!  😂

Ha ha ha - I'll have a drink with you anytime. Heck, I'll even buy 🤣.

Not of much help re: Linden dining scene, but Roma in Stephens City punches above it's weight, as does Regions 117.

So jealous. I’ve almost pulled the trigger on land on Fiery Run Rd about three times.

It's a date!!

Have you been to The Buttery in Millwood?  I was at an art show at the grist mill a few weeks ago and came upon that place and it looked pretty cool.  Three courses for fifty bucks!!  😂  There's also cool and related store next door called the Locke Store that sells wine and craft/artisan type food.  Some is prepared food and breads.  Some is from little artisanal suppliers.

Make it happen!!!  We can get part time jobs bringing in the harvest at Linden Vineyards!

If you're ever out there scoping out real estate, let me know!  I'll load you down with fresh produce from the garden.........I'll just need a half hour of weeding in return!  😁

Many, many times. They're inter-related and on the way to Millwood where I occasionally play golf (poorly). Great spots, and nice wines.

If you find yourself in Berryville, try Nik's broiler room. Fantastic, and reminiscent of Ray's the Steaks crossed with a NJ Italian American restaurant.

Though I should note that both are "over the mountain", and not considered part of the Middleburg area (Clarke County is kind of it's own tiny, odd universe). Farmer's Daughter is at the intersection of 50/ 340 in Boyce and is a less polished version of Locke Store as well, if it's on your way from Linden, or if you are heading to (shudder) Winchester.
