Red Horse Tavern, American Tavern at 118 W. Washington Street in Middleburg

Recommended Posts

We checked out the Red Horse Tavern last weekend. The deck can't be beat, but the food was middling to awful. French onion soup contained a weak broth with no onion. And to insult the soup even more, it was topped with plastic American cheese. Quelle horreur! The Cuban sandwich was remarkable for being served almost cold on a cheap pressed club roll. The rueben that Mr. MV ordered had me wishing I'd picked that instead. It was very tasty.

That's disappointing news. As I mentioned elsewhere, we've found the salads to be decent, along with a special or two, and the burger. Definitely not a culinary destination, but a good place to stop for a beer and some pub grub while making the rounds out in the wine/horse country, especially when there is a spot on the deck on a crisp fall/spring afternoon.

(looking at your choices - maybe it is best to stick to good ol' 'merican food instead of anything remotely ethnic laugh.gif )

Why does this always seem to happen? I find that no matter where I am, if someone orders a reuben at my table I feel the need to trade plates with them. Such an underrated sandwich.

It's just bar food, it gets the job done and the fries are crisp and the help is very friendly.  These guys are in business to meet the expectations of weekend hog bikers and the people who support the Horse Farm folk in the area.  They do a fine job of that.  We had mussels and fish-and-chips last month and it was perfectly ok.  The mushroom soup was a little too ambitious.  Nothing here is going to make you write long letters to the Pope but if you order sensibly you'll get fed ok for not too much money

Well said, antepiedmont. They have an honorable mission and it sounds like they are fulfilling it admirably.
