Virginia is for Wine Lovers

Chefs Poteaux present a Glen Manor wine dinner featuring Winemaker Jeff White

On Monday, August 6th, Chefs Christophe & Michelle Poteaux present a spectacular dinner featuring local wines from Glen Manor winery with special guest, third generation winemaker Jeff White.  $79 ($50 without pairings) prix fixe four-course dinner paired with wines from this acclaimed winery located in Virginia, approximately 70 miles west of Washington D.C. and is situated on a western flank of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The dinner begins at 6:30 with an aperitif paired with Thibault Sparkling from Virginia, followed by a first course of melon gazpacho with lemon thyme essence and Sauvignon Blanc, 2011.  Next course is tapioca curry with roasted prawn paired with Petit Manseng, 2011.  The meal continues with lamb osso bucco “en daube” with spiced eggplant puree married to Cabernet Franc, 2010.  It all comes to a finally with Michelle’s fabulous dessert of white peaches, Marcona almonds, and Greek yogurt sherbet along with the Late Harvest Petit Manseng, 2010.

The Glen manor estate comprises 212 acres of pastures, forests, and currently 14.5 acres of vineyards.  Neighboring farms and mountain forests surrounds it and to the east we share a common border with Shenandoah National Park.  The Commonwealth of Virginia, for being owned and farmed by four generations of family for over 100 years (currently 112 years) recognizes their farm as a Century Farm.

The original six-acre vineyard was established in 1995.  Sauvignon Blanc and four red Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are grown.  In 2006, establishment of a new vineyard site began with the clearing of a young forest on higher ground just northeast of the original vineyard.  An initial 4 acres of vineyards were established in 2008, with Petit Manseng and Merlot planted on the plateau, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the southern slopes.

The Chefs Poteaux take pains to source organic and sustainably raised products for their intimate bistro in Old Town Alexandria. The restaurant regularly features locally raised beef, pork and poultry from Smith Meadows Farm, Westmoreland Berry farm, Twin Springs Fruit farm, Tuscarora Farmers Co-Op, Dragon Creek Seafood, which are all located in the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as, using local farmers’ markets to select locally grown fruits and vegetables at their seasonal peak.

Bastille, named to Washingtonian’s top 100 restaurants in 2008-2011, winner of the Wine Spectator’s award of excellence since their opening 5 years ago and RAMMY nominated for ‘Best Neighborhood Gathering Place” in 2012 for is located at 1201 N. Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria, VA.  Bastille is open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch and dinner.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling 703-519-3776; or online at www.bastillerestaurant.com or by visiting http://www.opentable.com/bastille.  For more information, log ontowww.bastillerestaurant.com
