Demystifying Bitters
Most bars worth their salt have at least one kind of cocktail bitters on their back bar. But what are bitters? Why use them? Why does there seem to be a hundred different kinds on the market nowadays? For those that have always wondered about the mysterious dashes and drops your bartender is adding to that drink, this class will let guests in on the secret. Learn the history of cocktail bitters, how and why they are used, and taste several different types of bitters. Students will also get to try three cocktails where the use of bitters are not only called for, but essential. For those who wish to try their hand at making bitters at home, also discussed will be how to go about starting, what is needed and how long the process takes. This class is priced at $65.

Coming in the future: October 12—Aperitifs & Digestifs; October 20-Terrifying Tipples; November 3-Drinking in America and December 1, Holiday Tipples.
Tickets are available by logging into www.scofflawsden.com.

Doukénie Winery Announces Fall Harvest Events

Supports Virginia Wine Month

Tuesday, September 11, 2012, Loudoun County, VA – With the onset of cooler temperatures and turning leaves comes the anticipation of fall getaways to DC’s Wine Country to experience local Virginia wineries’ fall harvest. Sébastien Marquet, general manager and wine maker for Doukénie Winery, is currently in the midst of harvesting, but encourages guests to visit the winery, especially during two particular special events -- Taste of Italy, Saturday, September 22 and the Harvest Festival Saturday October 20.

The Taste of Italy Saturday September 22 is an annual event that brings a day full of fun, laughter, entertainment, and authentic Italian food to this beautiful destination. Stomp grapes, taste wine, tour the vineyard and learn some technical aspects of wine making with the experts at Doukénie Winery. Bring the whole family and enjoy face painting and live music throughout the day. This is a rain or shine event and the price is $25 per person ($20 in advance) starting from 12 to 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at http://doukéniewineryitaly.eventbrite.com or call Maria at 540-668-6464 x 202.

October is Virginia Wine Month and Doukénie Winery will celebrate with the Harvest Festival, a free event, Saturday, October 20 from 12 to 6 p.m. During the day the staff will offer vineyard and farm educational tours, wine tastings, meet the winemaker, enjoy a BBQ, mounted horse games and races and live music.

Doukénie‘s in-house geologist, Leanne, orchestrates a science-based walking vineyard tour elaborating on how a grape grower thinks, works, and lives. The word "viticulturist" is about the only technical word you will hear as she explains in simple language how grapes are grown in Virginia. Hear about the latest trends in vineyard maintenance, technology and review up-to-date maps showing local geology, landforms and water flow. Who are local growers turning to for advice? What holds grapevines up? Where should I plant a vineyard? How do some vineyards get by without irrigation? Why are stinkbugs no longer a major problem? How do we know when to harvest grapes? These questions and more can be answered at a kid-friendly level. The farm tours are part of the Loudoun County Farm event that also takes place October 20 and 21st, Saturday and Sunday.

To learn more about these events, go to www.doukéniewinery.com/events.htm or call Maria at 540-668-6464 x 202.
