I'm Whitt Masters, evening chef and manager of the Co-Op shift at the DC Central Kitchen. I just returned from vacation and reading this thread was an excellent way to come back to work. I want to express my gratitude to Pax for the donation of lamb to the kitchen. You are helping to feed Washington DC's most marginalized people. Each of the agencies that we serve provides a significant service to its clients, such as adult education, drug treatment, emergency shelter, etc. In this way, we strengthen bodies, empower minds, and build communities. Donations like yours help us to expand our other programs: culinary job training, street outreach, and nutrition education.

I also want to thank everyone who has expressed interest in volunteering with us at the DC Central Kitchen. We provide educational and meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups. We also have fun, particularly on the evening shift, when we get to play music (usually Motown hits) while we work. As other posters have mentioned, the tasks during this shift involve a lot of washing and chopping vegetables. However, we also make chicken stock, grain and bean salads, and granola bars at least once a week. Also, with the addition of a new vacuum sealer, we can put away this summer's harvest for use in the winter. For instance, tonight volunteers will be washing and slicing peaches, then vac-sealing them to put away for a meal down the road. I think that members of the DR community would have an excellent time seeing how our community kitchen runs. I hope to see you here!

I am getting ready to move my animals to NY. I have a handful of castrated spring lambs who need to go away. I want to donate them to a charity. Does anyone know of a food-based charity who would be willing to pick the lambs up from a local USDA certified butcher? I can deliver them there.

My plan is to donate one to the DR Community-At-Large Charity of Choice. Pipe up and let me know your favourites! Whatever gets the most votes here wins.

-AND/OR-

I will donate it to the DR Community at Large for a group party (with lots of left over!) If you guys plan it, A DR Party Authority can pick up a lamb at Hemp's Meats in Knoxville, MD.

Speak up now 'cause the truck and trailer is leaving for NY with the ewes next week.

I want to thank you all for the enjoyment I've had using this board.

ETA: The lambs have been entirely pasture fed, with access to a conventional mineral/protein block. They have been conventionally de-wormed every 8 weeks, but not in the last 30 days. None have received innoculations or antibiotics.

I absolutely cannot sell these animals because I have no clue what the health regulations are and I don't want to have to find out.

TO ALL, RIS HERE. GREAT POSTS, WHITT AND MIKE. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK. THE 18TH SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE FUN. THANKS PAX FOR ALL OF THIS AND THOSE PRECIOUS LAMBS. SORRY FOR NOT BEING AROUND BUT i HAVE BEEN IN THE THROES OF SEALING MY DEAL. AND, I AM NOT A REGULAR AT THIS. YOU MAY NEVER HEAR FROM ME AGAIN. BUT I WILL BE THERE ON THE 18TH. THANKS, DEBRA AND ALL OF YOU. WE WILL HAVE A BALL! RIS

And we'll have some more details in a week or two about dinner after the volunteer session.

To keep this topic focused on the volunteering, I would like to keep the dinner chatter in PM for now. I would like to request that the people on the volunteer list drop me a PM and let me know whether they plan on joining for dinner afterwards. Yes, I know that plans change, and your decision to dine could depend on the location chosen, but I'm trying to figure out whether I'm really working on dinner for 20+ or not.

Thanks!

We'd love to come, but because of our working situations/locations, we wouldn't be able to get there at 5 pm on a Thursday -- is there the possibility of having a later-starting shift? So you all would only have to go over the instructions twice, but us latecomers could still help wash & chop...

I will talk to the volunteer coordinator about this. 5-8pm is their standard evening shift time.

For those who can't make it at 5pm (brettashley01, Walrus, Tripewriter, and anyone else I may have missed) - please send me a PM and let me know what time it would be possible for you to get there.

Thanks!

Update on the sheep: the earliest Hemp's could fit all six in was October 14th. They will be ready to go about two weeks after that. I am sorry to have been out of the loop for a few days, I moved 22 ewes and four cats and six dogs the last few days. And two kids. With no internet service and surprisingly horrible cel phone service..(I'm looking at you, Verizon.)

Thanks again< Pax. and all of this has prompted what looks to be a great night at DCCK on the 18th. I was just there last night and, again, it was great.
