I was a little inspired by the book club post - http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?showtopic=4273. Was wondering would anyone be up for a cookbook reading/cooking club. Two possible ways of doing this.

1. Getting a book-style cookbook - for instance the Amanda Hesser or the Jeffrey Steingarten books and folks picking a dish, making it and bringing it to the discussion.
2. If someone had a nice big kitchen, getting the recipes from the book and cooking altogether.

Maybe logistically a little harebrained, but curious to see what folks would think.

I don't think it sounds harebrained. smile.gif mdt brought up a similar idea in the thread on Michel Richard's new cookbook.

I agree -- it sounds like a great idea. I'd be interested in doing either of those.

Ahh... another brilliant mdt concept whose time perhaps has come. We tried to get this off the ground before and it never quite materialized.

Hmm... let's find a way to make this work. Actually I read about this book Tasting Club, http://www.amazon.com/Tasting-Club-Gatheri...ie=UTF8&s=books, in the Express. Haven't actually tried to read it, but I think it has potential. And actually looks like the author will be at this lil' shindig http://www.metrocooking.com/tickets/index.html

I have an idea: (if there is no big kitchen)
1. Choose a recipe/date/time and post (i.e. anybody interested in cooking this recipe on some day?).
2. Group people by area (3 or 4 people/group MD, DC, VA and so on) or by preference.
3. Pick a kitchen in the group.
4. Start cooking at the same time on the date.
5. Post the result.
How do you think?

That sounds like a great idea! I'm willing to volunteer my place in the Van Ness area to be the first.

Going back to the book club concept as well if we do start with the tasting book, I think it could be open to a larger number of people since we wouldn't really need a kitchen. Plus the greater number of people the more varieties of whatever it is that we're tasting.

So it seems this has a potential to split into two different activities:
1. Recipe club
2. Tasting club

I would personally like to try making macarons. (I think I need a mixer!)
