  1. I have friends in London this week (attending a family funeral) and they are in desperate need of a romantic dinner. They're looking for modern english, but not Gordon Ramsay prices.....and a place that will help them forget the reason why they're in London this week. Any suggestions? thanks! ~erin
  2. At the moment.....Pimm's and seven.
  3. Without planning, a friend and i found ourselves at Zola last night and took advantage of RW (had planned on skipping it all together this year). I was pleasantly surprised and would put it down as one of my best RW experiences. I started with the tuna tartare......the chips were great, but the cilantro really overwhelmed the flavor of the tuna. My friend had the grilled flatbread, which had a deliciously peppery arugala and made for a nice contrast to the salmon and goat cheese. I had the duck confit and she had the monkfish. The duck confit was a little sweeter than I had anticipated (cherry glaze), but not horrible. The monkfish was cooked perfectly and had a great combination with the sweet potato, bacon, and swiss chard. For dessert, I had the creamsicle and she had the peanut butter trifle. It was way too much food, but I'd go back for the peanut butter trifle---just the right balance of peanut and chocolate. Surprisingly, there didn't seem to be upcharges for anything on the menu. But as with anything, perhaps it's all about one's expectations!
  4. I think that was easily the best quote of the night. Though really amusing to see how much they liked Nigella. I have to say I gained new found respect for her when hearing about the aborted pig fetus. Is it wrong that when I heard that, my first thought was 'wow! i'd really love to try that!'?
  5. I was in Paris last christmas and had no problem finding places to eat......of course, I was also not going for a high end foodie experience either. I would suggest that if you can get into one of the better restaurants on christmas eve, it's really worth the experience. It definitely felt like that was the night to be out celebrating. Christmas day was a little more quiet, but there was still stuff open in the marais, the champs, and the latin quarter. I found the "chain" brasseries were open and fairly easy to get into. If it makes you more comfortable, you can make reservations online at the FLO brasseries.
  6. Went to Seattle a few weeks ago, and had two VERY memorable meals. The first was at Dahlia Lounge, a Tom Douglas restaurant. I started out with the Tuscan Bread Salad. Though this dish came highly recommended, I was skeptical, as I don't like "mushy" food. It was spectacular--the bread was just the right combination of chewy and crunchy, and the pesto was strong. Each bite was filled with a great complexity of flavors and textures. My entree was a spinach goat-cheese ravioli. The ravioli were tender, however I was surprised to find the goat cheese outside of the ravioli rather than inside. For dessert, I had made to order doughnut holes with vanilla marscapone cheese. The doughnuts were piping hot and came in bag with a cinnamon sugar mix. The cream added just the right amount of savory to balance the sweetness of the doughnuts. Seriously, I almost audibly moaned!! Usually when I dine by myself, I read book while eating. This meal made it impossible to read as I was so consumed by quality of the food that I had to concentrate on each bite!! The second was a Wild Ginger. This is a family-style restaurant, so not the best for the solo diner. I started with two of their satays--a chicken and a pork. The sauces were complex, without being overly sweet. The meat was practically falling off the stick it was so tender. My entree was their fragent duck. Sadly, I was hoping for more of a taste of the anise and other spices...but really, it doesn't take much for me to love duck! Would highly recommend either to anyone visiting Seattle!
  7. I'm pretty partial to the Pad Thai at Pilin in Tysons. There's a good mix of quality vegetables in their version.
  8. We went to Merkado saturday night. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but that's where my date wanted to go. Overall, we had a very good meal. Started out with the pineapple margaritas....and I was unimpressed. Not sure what was off, but there wasn't much flavor at all to it. Based on recommendations, we stuck to the small plates and avoided the nachos! The chili rellano was good....I didn't find the filling to be overwhelming, and the beans were fine....so perhaps there have been some adjustments? The diver scallops in the orange vinaigrette were excellent...well balanced with the sauce and tender. The plaintains were good, not too oily, but I think cut a bit thick for my taste. The tuna in the miso-sake reduction was spectacular....a great combination of the lightness of the tuna with the earthiness of the sauce. The only miss for me was the shrimp tempura...it seemed more like beer battered shrimp than tempura! For dessert, we had the banana spring rolls.....which I found to be too sweet. I make a similar dish, but add a small amount of dark chocolate, which cuts through the sweetness of the banana. We also had the pineapple upside down cake.....the cake itself was fine....but the sauce around the cake was revolting. It was literally at war with the cake. The service was great. Even recommending a beer for my date that would compliment the dessert. And according to him, the beer was a great match.
  9. Well, just to make things complicated, I'm looking for a place to drink....but order good food as the night progresses.
  10. Hi all, I would really appreciate any recommendations for a good bar/lounge date place. We've done Firefly...and am looking for a place with a more modern-type decor. Thanks!
