  1. dang, now we really are impressed ! when we went to the belle view safeway at noon today, there were three full bus coaches, and two half-size coaches outside of "Roys". at the same time. i assume they all pre-order, but that's a lot of "burgers and fries" to get out of that little location. just think if they knew there was a 5 guys nearby robert clair alexandria, va 22308
  2. ... kind of surprised no one mentioned this one yet. if you have a first edition of h. mcgee's on food and cooking, you'll know this gets tossed around a bit, especially the quick "searing" of a piece of meat to "keep" the juices in, ie water. all myths. ... i have a dear friend that "marinates", using some special something-or-other they bring in by the case from little rock. takes a day or two to get it tenderized properly before it hits the grill ... and it still comes across like a dead tennis shoe, albiet one with "flavour". ... but "soaking" tomatoes (hello dan quayle), and seafood bits in this and that, now that's a "marinade" ! robert clair alexandria, va 22308
  3. ... as a former somewhat recent patient at the Alexandria/Mt Vernon/Inova hospital, and then the Hinson Farms rehab center, we really like starting to go to this. i mean what can we say, it's our neighborhood. ... anyway we're happy with the buffalo folks, and all the veg's, the breads and the pies. this is good, what's not to like. ... parking has not been remotely a problem, except maybe when you're "warding" off mommies in vans with child carriers, and you still have to use a cane robert clair alexandria, va 22308
  4. Please, I'm sorry. But the follow excerpt needs no explanation., ie, it could probably guide a Jet Blue airline anywhere between North Carolina and SOHO in New York. Any chance we could get some street addresses here along with these interesting posts. How are we supposed to go to these places. Maybe something other than ... well. "If you're living anywhere between Arlington/Alexandria and Chantilly and points North or East of those you may definitely want to consider it. It is left immediately after the Route 7 split in Leesburg." Anyway we just heard that several ex-spensive steak houses in DC are now offering Personal Seat Licenses. Mainly for lunch. Love the sin in a "recession". Robert Clair Alexandria, VA 22308
  5. ... i take my bicycles to the Spokes One at Belle View/Belle Haven. so off to the shop today ... ... and while outside there were several tour buses at "Roy's". remember when those buses stopped at Roy's at King and Washington back in the day. now they are here in droves. it's ok. anyway i told one of the teachers about the grist mill and the distellary ... what they were missing. i think several of those chaparons could have have used a spot on later ... what do we know robert clair alexandria, va
  6. I know this isn't going to be much help (other than for possible reference). But several years we had a most perfect shrimp po-boy in Baton Rouge. A ten out out of a ten. It was in an older place downtown, near the railroad station (now art museum), and the old capitol buidling (quite nice we must say). Anyway, the annual food review came out later that weekend in the local Baton Rouge paper ... this place not only didn't make the top five, it didn't make the two honorable mentions either. Goodness what a tough crowd! Southside 815 is ok (it's near here), as long as you toss the bread, and get some Zat's mustard. Other than that, instead of Winsor McCay's Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, we can always dream on for the real thing arounf here. Robert Clair Alexandria, VA 22308
  7. ... sorry, forgot to mention the flour part, salt and pepper were optional (since we didn't have any). Also there was a "battle of the bands" back then ... would the green beans who had been setting on a hot stove all day, survive the bacon. Hint: the green beans always lost. The cornbread always came out like lead as well. And yes, we pray to the "potato" gods today for the abuse inflicted on the red pots, just taken from the field that am (as were everyting else), boiled to hell and back. What the f...k we're they thinking back then ... and why are some of us still here. And don't get me started on seatbelts. Seatbelts! What are seatbelts? RC-
  8. Been there, had that, as little person. Yes to the bacon fat. The "gravy" was a simple milk reduction over heat "scrapping" up the "bits leftover. Milk gravy, staple of many cooks, in many countries. The biscuits were doable though (from a wood-burning stove- but hard as a rock). Robert Clair Alexandria, va 22308
  9. ... the fellow that did Rice-a-Roni passed today. my mom adid ton of this stuff. tang. that too. green bean/onion ring cassarole for t-days. that too. you all know what we mean here. any regonition out there. i know i can't do poached eggs anymore, but this is the fellow that did it all. r clair alex, va 22308
  10. perhaps for you. Miracle Whip, and Durkees ... southern staples for sandwiches in {insert area of country raised up in}. Wonderbread (there's a few blue ball's for you among the others) anyway top it with Velveeta, and what are you going to do as a tad pol back then ? Anyway Giant in southern MD has another southern jarred Mayo, was rolled into a red velvet cake recipe. danged if i can remember that one. anyway we brought back some stuffed ham from (...., sorry can't remenmber that one either) good stuff on white bread and .... robert clair alexandria, va 22308 thank you for this list
  11. sorry, forgot to mention we got the Hausmacher brats. to paraphrase Homer ... "Ummm ... Brats!" we'll be back saturday for the Bauren. by the way, if one is coming "up" 244 (left to right from the freeway) they are on the left side. to bad they don't do fries robert clair alex, va 22308
  12. it is still too small at the new location, and yes there is still no parking. if you went this afternoon at 3 pm you know what we mean but great brats, and the usual stuff. plus "brotchen" rolls hot out of the oven by chance. what's not to like if one is out that way. r clair alex, va 22308 [i urgebeveryone to give this place a try! 13. Looks like the Washington Post has gone net audio/video this PM with a bit on Rest Eve. On the upper left of their homepage tonight. PS. Hope I posted this properly. R. Clair Alexandria, Va 22308
  14. Nothing personal, but why do you keep digging your hole deeper? There was nothing wrong with the original post on ths issue. For whom do the bells toll here then. Robert Clair Alex, Va 22308
  15. Went looking for Hank's in Old Town this afternoon. After a false start or two (I kind of assumed they were in the 600-800 block of King Street) I found them in what I consider the "Bermuda Triangle" of Old Town ... that piece of King between rte 1 going north and south. Still surprised that N & S on the corner is still there. Anyway pretty good lobster roll (I must say A bit pricey. No clams though today, maybe next saturday. Robert Alex, VA
