  1. I went here for brunch on Saturday...and it was so good I went back on Sunday also. The menu is split between a vegan side and a non-vegan side as a nod to the former Asylum brunch. I thought the portion size was great, and the selection had something for everyone. Over the two days, I had the huevos rancheros, sweet potato/oat burger stack with fried eggs, and my dining partner had the brisket/sweet potato hash, and the breakfast tacos. Everything was delicious and priced well. Sat at the bar both times and had great service. The two kinds of bbq sauce (spicy and mild) were a good alternative to the ketchup and hot sauce we would normally use at breakfast - and both were great! The beer and bourbon offerings are amazing, and if you go for lunch or dinner do NOT miss the roasted banana pudding. I know...I've never liked banana pudding either...but this is a far cry from the kind you see in the lunch cafeteria or at an all you can eat buffet.
  2. Went here with my father on Monday - he is more of a steak and potatoes eater, so the ginger tea (which is spicy and great if you have a cold), was too much for him. I have no idea how authentic this place is, but my father really enjoyed the Tom Yum soup. I had the vegetables and tofu sauteed and served in a half pineapple with cashews and pineapple chunks, in a sweet and sour ginger sauce. There was a lot of sauce left over, but I enjoyed it. The presentation was very cool. The place smelled a little bit like wet carpet, but the food was good and the price was great.
  3. I've been to the rooftop for drinks (and sometimes snacks) many times, but finally went to the dining room for dinner last night. It was surprising cozy for a cold winter evening - dimly lit chandeliers and a fireplace. Along with the bread basket to start, they serve some deep-fried spicy chickpeas that I could have eaten as a meal. Delicious. I almost want to buy a deep fryer for my apartment to make these myself. I had the goat cheese salad to start, and it was the best rendition of this dish that seems to appear on every menu. This is how it's done! Lightly dressed frisee salad with a large goat cheese medallion, charred and crispy on the outside. It was perfect, even my goat-cheese-hating fiance loved it. Rounded out the meal with the pickling sampler (loved the idea of this, but seemed like an after thought from the kitchen), and vegetable and avocado rolls. Sushi was great -- lots of filling, not a ton of rice. Fiance had steak frites, and he was even surprised at how perfectly cooked the steak was. The fries were also good - nothing phenomenal, but a good matchup to the steak. He started with the bouillabaisse -- it was a tad too creamy for him, but had a good amount of seafood. All in all, much better than I expected for a restaurant that mixes sushi with other bistro/American fare -- definitely in the rotation.
  4. Went to Mala Tang last Saturday - loved the concept of the individual hot pot (so I can get vegetarian and not subject anyone else to a meatless dinner). My dining partner and I got one order of the American style vegetables, and one of the Chinese style. You can also create your own dipping sauce to dip the meat/vegetables in after cooking in the boiling broth, which was a nice touch. I left full and happy after lots of broccoli, bean curd, cabbage, and very thin potato slices. Also tried the buns and dumplings -- dumplings were the better choice. I enjoyed the American style vegetables a little more - I'd go a la carte next time though. Decor was nice also!
  5. I finally made it out to Clifton for brunch at Trummers last Sunday. I had the mushroom omelet and it was easily the best omelet I've ever eaten. The texture was perfect, very light but still a little gooey inside. Loved it. The bloody mary was pretty good (could have used a tad more salt, but that's just my personal taste I think) -- really enjoyed the garnish on the bloody mary of pickled green tomatoes! Short post, but everyone at the table enjoyed their cocktails and meals. Wish I lived closer! Great coffee and great service as well.
  6. That is awesome - and I really appreciate the response. I have no idea why the consumption went down since I tell pretty much everyone I know how great it is. I realize that I'm going to the wrong place for a vegetarian, but all I could remember is that I had read an article (maybe in the Washingtonian?) that you actually cared about having something non-meat on the menu! It was surprising and good to hear. Anyways, I did manage to replace the normal meal by drinking an entire bottle of wine by myself, so I guess there's always that for now. And I wasn't trying to make an idle threat - I was honestly trying to think to myself how to break it to my Dad that we were going to find a new place to go for his birthday -- my parents adore Ray's and are anxiously awaiting the seafood version...
  7. I was so disappointed to find out that Ray's took the vegetarian entree off the menu when I visited last night. Those delicious mushrooms with the diablo sauce were the best vegetarian entree in Arlington, and the main reason I visited the restaurant with my family and friends so often -- it's hard to find a steakhouse I can eat something at other than side dishes. The salad was good and the waitress was apologetic, but I'm going to have to cross it off the list if I'm just going there for a salad. My boyfriend and I were going to Ray's at least once a month since it's his favorite restaurant, but we'll have to find a new spot unless they plan to replace it with something else.
