  1. I got carryout from China Star on Friday night. The Basilman said he didn't want any "ox anus" so I went with hot & sour soup, fried dumplings, spring rolls and the outstanding salt & pepper eggplant. Thank God that is still on the menu. I really, really miss those puffy scallion pancakes. I didn't make it to China Gourmet before the chef split, damn it.
  2. The Laugen rolls are my favorite. They are like round soft pretzels. I think they brush them with butter before they sprinkle on the salt. (Like Auntie Ann's, but better.) I had a flattened one with Swiss cheese melted on it the other day - I think they call it "cheese bread" - yum. Also their health bread is very good. The white chocolate mousse cake is to die for.
  3. I love Villa Bella in Burke, in the WalMart shopping center at Burke Center Parkway and Roberts Parkway.
  4. I dunno I'll have to check out the bells and see if they're spicy. Actually, about half of the garden has "burned up" due to all that horrendo heat we had the last couple of weeks. I am SO ready for fall.
  5. Get some white vinegar. Put the peppers in a big jar and cover with the vinegar. Refrigerate. They will keep a good long time that way. Or you could whiz them up in a food processor (wear goggles!) with vinegar. I think the proportion is 3 parts vinegar to 1 part peppers. Put in jars and refrigerate or freeze. Then you can add to chili, salsas, etc. You could also string them and let them dry in a dry area of your house. Wear gloves! My boyfriend's garden is overflowing with peppers right now. Like, over 100 different types. Enjoy your vacation!
  6. Stale Bugles. OK, OK. My stomach was rumbling because I could not bring myself to eat the egg roll I got today at the building's cafeteria. Blech. It's Chinese Day! Not. I didn't want to go near the "General Tso's Chicken" or the "Fried Rice." I've eaten plenty of bad egg rolls in my life, but this was the worst. Even worse than those little baby frozen ones you can get at Giant.
  7. The Washingtonian review of Tempt Asian in Alexandria alludes to the fact that the chef formerly worked for the Chinese ambassador - which I think I read somewhere about China Star's chef. Anyway, several of the dishes mentioned sounded like what they used to have at China Star - particularly those amazing scallion pancake-balloons. Guess I'll have to make a trip to Alexandria soon. Edited to add that I should have looked further down at johnb's post
