  1. Happy to report an opening instead of a closing: Casa Rosada Artisan Gelato just opened a week ago. They're located in a little pink house on the 100 block of South Payne, with a cozy enclosed patio in the rear. The owners are an Argentinian couple and their son - very nice people. They offer a variety of interesting flavors, including a few soy-based options and some fruit sorbets. The PBJ was very good - a (real) banana base with chunks of peanut butter. We also enjoyed a three-berry flavor, which was loaded with fruit. Several flavors feature alcohol, including the sambayon - Marsala/Port blend. This is the perfect spot to head for a dessert after a meal at La Fromagerie, IMHO
  2. There's a newish bubble tea shop in Alexandria, Bubble Dip. I haven't been in, but they offer a variety of drinks, cupcakes, cookies, and other goodies. Looks like they opened in early May, and are located on the same block as Trattoria da Franco (300 block of S. Washington).
  3. Olea is the latest venture in the space previously occupied by Parsian Restaurant and Zorkafor's SandVeg. They're currently in a soft opening phase, and are serving the menu at half-price for the next few weeks. I haven't been in yet, but plan to make a visit, as I did enjoy the sample of their pizza that was being offered out front. It had a light, crispy crust, good flavor, and wasn't at all greasy. The chef (Mehrnoosh) and her husband, Majid, are Iranian and, according to this blog post linked on their website, she had an Italian restaurant in Tehran prior to immigrating to the US. The menu includes panini and salads, though they may be adding breakfast and some other items in the future. The space has been nicely updated, the staff appear to be very friendly and enthusiastic, and I hope they'll be very successful!
  4. La Fromagerie Wine and Cheese Bistro is hiring an experienced restaurant/wine bar professional with EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE and INTEREST in small production, natural wine as well as farm to table food. The position involves managing the 300+ wine collection and wine list for the restaurant as well as waiting on customers. it is the opportunity for the right person to put his/her mark on the wine department and express his/her wine philosophy (which obviously has to be the same as ours) Great remuneration will reward dedication, attention to details and PASSION Please forward resume at info@lafromagerieonline.com
  5. wandering around other parts of the web, came across a blurb about a food truck rodeo on June 6 in the Seminary Towers parking lot. Running time 11-7, so it says. Among others, Port City, Red Hook, Sinplicity are bringing their trucks. Facebook page
  6. I swear there was a thread once on doctors in Arlington, but I can't for the life of me find it. In fact in that thread I swear someone was mentioned that was near our house. My husband needs to find a doctor near our house in Ballston (but surrounding Arlington is fine). He is generally in very good health, unlike me, and doesn't want to see my fancy, expensive and not close to the house doctor, and just needs someone who can treat things like: sinus infections, allergies, the yearly physical and such. We have a PPO so they don't need to be on any specific list. It just needs to be someone he can get in to see relatively easily if he is sick. He will have a new job at Mount Vernon, so I would also take an Alexandria recommendation that isn't too far off the GW Parkway or Route 1. Thanks in advance.
  7. I (Sebastien) looking for a partner in crime to have fun in the kitchen. We make everything from scratch using only local and seasonal products. If you enjoy preserving, curing, pickling, canning, confit, pasta rolling etc, if you have ideas and like to be involved in different kitchen projects, email info@lafromagerieonline.com FULL TIME COOK WITH A PASSION FOR THE CRAFT NEEDED. Full time position, decent $$, fun environnement Like · · Share
  8. I was walking around at lunch today and passed by 100 King St (vacant for awhile) and notice a bunch of permits on the windows and obvious demolition going on. Went back to the office and did a bit of digging and found a submission by Carluccios on the upcoming docket of the Board of Architectural Reviews. Apparently a UK based Italian chain. Carluccios.pdf
  9. This place opened up on Duke St where Maggio used to be, by the bike shop. The menu looked so interested - typical kebabs, hummus, dolma and the like. But, there were many other things I've never heard of - stews, fried fish dishes, lamb shank, etc. It had the feel of Amoo's - families, native languages heard, family owned and operated, but it's Iraqi not Iranian. From the few yelp reviews, this is the only Iraqi place in the area and the Iraqi community is very excited and impressed with the cooking. The place was packed, almost all middle eastern crowd. We tried to place a carryout order and they just couldn't get to us - after over ten minutes, we still couldn't place an order so ended up leaving. I know they were super busy, but we were starving and had some little kids involved and it wasn't going to work out. The food I saw looked impressive, they have Iraqi breakfast at 9a and it looks like a real solid operation. I'll try again to eat there soon, but when someone else goes, please report!
  10. "Bastille To Open Second Location In Alexandria" by Rebecca Cooper in bizjournals.com "The new restaurant, which will keep the name, while the original changes monikers [to Bistro Royal], will be located on the ground floor of the Asher Building ... at Pendleton and Fayette streets in North Old Town." Contratulations to the Poteaux family and to Mark Slater. This restaurant was too good for its tiny environs for quite some time now, and deserves a better space. Mark, is there anything else you can add?
  11. I'm looking for someone to fix the drainage problem I have in the back yard. This is different from the "bad drainage, muddy yard and want to grow grass" thread in here somewhere. I have grass, but when it rains long and hard, or when a lot of snow melts, we get a lake back there. And if it's not a lake, it's usually soft and soggy for days. The previous owners put in a french drain which might have worked way back when, but doesn't anymore. Has anyone successfully dealt with this kind of thing? Who'd you use? Thanks!
  12. Alley Cat is now doing Sunday Brunch Our local okay not great place to eat (walking distance makes up for a lot of things) is now doing a great brunch on Sundays, we have been 4 times now and the quality and diversity is consistently good, They cover the pool tables as the serving area and have a staffed area along the side. The staffed area is a standard omelet station also does waffles and eggs Benedict and roast beef. On the chaffing tables are scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, biscuits and gravy, grits, and crepes. Then there is a more lunch type of table with pasta and usually a chicken dish and a potatoes dish. The other trays seem to vary week to week. Another area next to this (I think a 3rd pool table) is fruit, chocolate fondue, breads/bagles (with a toaster) and a dessert or two. Coffee is good and filled quickly, staff is polite and they have room for a large group. Conversation is easy (not to loud which is a plus when taking Grandma), easy parking, clean restrooms. They even handle special requests (They had apple pie and Grandma had to have ice cream with hers) All you can eat Sunday 10am - 2pm $13.99/person and $8.99 kids under 10 Location: 2 S Whiting St, Alexandria, VA 22304
  13. I got home tonight to find the neighborhood listserve abuzz with news that the bagel shop in Bradlee Center has been served notice of eviction. There was a link to this petition for signing, and I'm curious if there is any way to find out the facts about what has happened.
  14. I've eaten there in the past, for dinner and for weekend brunch. I haven't been there in a few years because it wasn't that good, but I might give it a try again....it's literally right around the corner from Mediterranean Gourmet Market, so if I'm in that neighborhood, I'm usually there for my MGM fix.
  15. The Waterfront Market & Cafe held their press preview last week and friends and family grand opening on Sunday. The official public opening date has been announced as next Tuesday, November 26. Based on photos from the various events, the space looks great and it should be a very nice addition to the quite limited options located directly on the water. There's definitely a push to draw locals in with the "back to your waterfront" tag line. The menu will include custom sandwiches, salads, prepared gourmet items, beer and wine to go (or drink there), fresh sushi, pastries, etc., with similar items available for purchase at the retail market. More specifics here, via LocalKicks. Jody Manor, the owner of Bittersweet Cafe and Catering (in business since 1983), knows a thing or two about creating a sustainable, successful business, so here's wishing him a long run in this latest venture. I'm looking forward to checking it out soon after it opens!
  16. Folks, every once in awhile, a request comes in that's so important that I drop everything else I'm doing, and put 100% of my energies into it. This is one of those times. Eric Reid, Chef of Del Ray Pizzeria, formerly Chef of Del Merei Grille, has made the request, and we must rally for him. Eric employs two dishwashers, Enma Gomez, and her son, Elder Gomez. Last week, Enma's daughter, and Elder's sister, Claudia, was murdered in cold blood in her home in Honduras. She had four children, ages 4 through 14, who are now motherless. After the funeral, the children came up to be with their father and the rest of their family, and are now staying in Alexandria. Here is the news report (if you Google "Claudia Yaneth Membreí±o Gomez," there are plenty of news stories about it), and the details of the benefit follow below: PROGRESS, YORO, HONDURAS; Nov. 13 - Claudia Yaneth Membreí±o Gomez (32), mother of four, was murdered in her home. Claudia was serving dinner to her four children, ages four through fourteen, when three armed men entered to take her life. Membreí±o lived in the neighborhood of the Sociedad de Progresso. Membreí±o had traveled extensively to the United States because of her husband's business contacts. Her husband is a resident of he USA. Police reports allege, Membreí±o was in her home preparing dinner for their children when the gunmen entered. One assailant took her to a separate room, while the others guarded the children. After shooting Membreí±o, the assailants fled the scene and the children were left in the home. The children called for emergency services which took Membreí±o to the public hospital in El Progresso, where she died. A relative reported that she had confided that 15 days ago strangers called the house and left messages "if you do not pay a certain amount of money, you would be killed ". Membreí±o was in the process of joining her Husband in the United States, and was ready to deliver evidence to Investigator lugar Agentes, of The National Directorate of Criminal Investigation ( DNIC ) reported already working on the case to catch the perpetrators. Next Tuesday, November 26th, at 7:00 PM, Del Ray Pizzeria will be having a benefit dinner for the Gomez family. Eric has designed a special menu which will be served in the private dining area upstairs. The special menu is $40, with $20 of the cost going directly into the pockets of the Gomez family. In addition, the owners of Del Ray Pizzeria will match the $20 with their own money, so in essence, 100% of the proceeds ($40 per dinner) will be going directly to the Gomez family, in the form of a cash payment. There's nothing indirect; they're just going to hand them the cash. In addition to this special menu, the owners of Del Ray Pizzeria have agreed that on this evening, 80% of the proceeds from regular menu sales (downstairs) will go directly to the Gomez family, also in the form of a cash payment. So if you get the special menu, if will cost you $40, and 100% of that will benefit the family. If you eat downstairs, you can buy whatever you want, and 80% of what you spend will benefit the family. And if that wasn't enough, Chef Eric Reid is giving up 100% of his salary that day, and the servers and bartenders have agreed to give up 100% of their tips that evening. Again, all in the form of direct cash payment to the Gomez family. Please note: you do NOT have to be a donrockwell.com member to support this cause. Just call the restaurant at (703) 549-2999 - I'll figure out how to merge all the reservations with Eric later. Here is the three-course menu: Special Menu $40 Grilled Camerones with Mango Horseradish Sauce or Grilled Radicchio Salad with Chantrelle Mushrooms, Smoked Goat Cheese or Smoked Tuna with Roasted Garlic Pita Points Low Country Perlou Red Snapper, Clams, Shrimp, Potatoes and Chorizo or Braised Beef Short Rib with Roasted Root Vegetables and Chipotle Demi or Roasted Half Chicken with Pork Tamales and Chicken Jus Plantain Fosters or Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and Rum Caramel Sauce Please RSVP here, and indicate the number of people attending, and whether you will be ordering the special menu upstairs, or the regular menu downstairs. If by chance we can fill up all 38 seats upstairs, we can begin reserving for a second seating afterwards, but let's worry about that problem when we come to it. In addition, for those who cannot go next Tuesday night, but would like to help the Gomez family, I have a PayPal account set up, and will turn over 100% of all monies donated to the Gomez family - I will take the total amount, write Del Ray Pizzeria (or the Gomez family) a check, and print out the list of donations as an audit for all to see (if you want your name to read "Anonymous" just let me know). My PayPal email address is donrockwell@dcdining.com. So there are three ways to help this poor family, and I hope you take the opportunity to do so. I'm hoping to get a lot of people into the restaurant next Tuesday night, but if you can't go, even just donating a couple of dollars will buy a child a meal. It has been a long time since I have felt compelled to ask people in this community for money, but I'm asking now. I know that Eric is going to respond to this also. Please open up your hearts and your wallets for this family.
  17. This restaurant opened up about 3 weeks ago, and not a review on Yelp or DR or anywhere that I can see. I went in a week ago to look at the menu. They had standard north Indian fare, a Sri Lankan menu, and oddly enough, a few Thai dishes. So, yesterday, I had not eaten all day and went over there to pick up some take out. It was only two of us, so we didn't get to try much, but I'll definitely go back to try more dishes. The place inside isn't much different than when it was Po Siam. I think some of the same decorations are up. I'm sure it will take some time. The bar area remains, but the alcohol does not. Wondering what their plan is going to be for that... I ordered off of the Sri Lankan section. Dhal Vede - "the quintessential street food of south India and Sri Lanka" (not my words, I just googled it). It's a small patty made of split yellow lentils, chilies, curry powder or leaves, chickpea flour. About 2-2.5 inches, circular. They are tasty and a nice snack. 3 in an order for $4. Eaten with tamarind sauce and cilantro sauce. Mutton Curry - deep brown color, meat on the bone, flavorful. My dining partner has some issues with spicy food, so we went with medium spice level. It was rich and I enjoyed it. It was $11-12 and not a very big portion. There was a fair amount of meat. Eggplant dish - I forgot the Indian name. Not too different than baingan bartha. It was good, but skin was on, and I don't always like that. Sorry, not super descriptive - feel like takeout is super hard to get a hold of. I liked it. I'm going to try as many of the other dishes as I can. Since Bombay Curry Company seems like it will never open, this is what we have for South Asian in the Del Ray area. At about 615p, it was nearly empty, save for one other person who came in for take out. She tried ordering a Thai dish. I hope people give it a chance.
  18. Just good people trying to make it in the world of small business. Del Ray Variety is a mish mash of items. It reminds me of Robertsons Five and Dime that is now Bills Hardware in North Arlington. Its got everything that one might need except fashionable organic food. But it does have organic baby toys and items. Greeting cards, wrapping, balloons, and a whole lot more. Did I see seasonal decorations? You got it! Household items? Bam! The jist of this place is its got a little of everything. Swing by and thank me later. Right off Mt Vernon Avenue. Have fun. Josh Radigan
  19. I've noticed that we have a fairly substantial contingent from South Alexandria; yet, I'm not at liberty to disclose people's identities without their permission. I would love to be able to hook up people from that area, but they're going to need to "opt in." Could you write me if you're interested in getting to know a group of like-minded diners from your area, and I'll hook you up? Unless you're pro-active, I can't do it for obvious reasons. So either post here, or write me privately - I think we can form a nice-sized TMB fraternity/sorority south of the beltway in Alexandria. Cheers, Rocks
  20. Per oldtownalexandria.patch.com, it looks like they are finally doing something with the long vacant Torpedo Factory Food Court. It is a huge space.
  21. Potentially ecstatic news for those of near the restaurant wasteland that exists along Route 1 south of the Beltway. River Bend Bistro looks to be opening its doors fairly soon. Located about halfway between the Beltway and Mount Vernon (at 7966 Fort Hunt Road, to be precise), this place shows every sign of being several notches above any other place I can think of in that area. The chef, Caroline Ross, is a former sous chef at Bistro Bis, also spent some time (according to an internet article I found) at Restaurant Eve and Cafe Milano, and is the former General Manager of Rick's Wine and Gourmet (RIP). They have apparently been doing battle with the great Fairfax County permit machine for almost a year but are almost done. A friend I have on staff told me they most likely be open "within the next three weeks or so."
  22. Any good recommendations for decent chinese take out in vicinity of Old Town/Shirlington? Got a hankering for cantonese-Americanized veggie fried rice, general tso's, etc. Thanks!
  23. I was bitter when my cousin transferred from a hospital in the Little Korea/Eden Center corner of the earth and moved to some corner of Alexandria/Mt. Vernon that as far as I know has little to offer in the way of dinner, but I suppose her spine is more important than my stomach. At any rate, any help you can provide in terms of casual sit-down and decent carry-out will be helpful in helping me get my priorities back in order and making the vigils of the various visiting relatives (adventurous eaters, all) more tolerable. Note that, even though it is located on Mt. Vernon Avenue, Cheesetique (which might be a little fancy for these purposes) is about 20 minutes away from Inova Mt. Vernon, which is near Ft. Hunt Park. On the other hand, the quickest route from DC to the hospital seems to be down rout 1 through or near Del Ray and Old Town, so any quick pick-up spots with decent parking in those areas will be appreciated, as well. Thanks. She is expected to be OK, by the way.
  24. I stopped by tonight with a fried chicken craving and Blue and White Carryout had already closed. This place has recently undergone new management the past couple of months but this was my first time in. (corner of Monroe and Mt. Vernon) 12 bucks with a little extra got me a large quarter dark meat chicken (the drum and thigh attached) two generous sides (Mac and cheese and collard greens) with a homemade sweet tea and lemonade. It took a little over ten minutes to get my food together (I assume they were frying to order) and I chose to eat in. There was only one other patron in the place at the same time as me, and he enthusiastically praised the smothered pork chops. The counter service was friendly and fast. I noticed the cook and cashier both peering curiously as I ate to see if I liked it, but they never asked me directly. My chicken was fine. Not searingly as hot as the mac and cheese, but with a crunchy-crisp, medium-weight dredged skin that was well-seasoned. Less breading than Popeye's or KFC but more substantial than Korean fried chicken. Not sure if they soaked the chicken in anything before frying, but the meat was moist, if a little bland. The skin made up for the blandness of the meat - you really have to eat the two together, I learned. There is generic hot sauce on every table if you prefer a little kick. My favorite of the sides was the collard greens - they make them with smoked turkey and are obviously made with skill and love. I will try the mashed potatoes next time, they don't come from a box. The mac and cheese was okay - dusted with paprika and just shy of becoming gummy as I ate. Nothing spectacular. I will go here when Blue and White is closed (which is after 3:30 on weekdays) It costs just a bit more than smaller carryouts, but it's got high enought quality ingredients and skill to justify it. Convenient and tasty soul food in Del Ray!
