1968 Washington DC a WashPo Retrospective

Today on the WashPo website there is an article that describes the DC riots from early April, 1968, 50 years ago

Far more descriptive and interesting from an historical and local perspective but also a foodie and restaurant perspective is the hard copy Washington Post from today with a large insert describing this urban riot and a variety of stories around it.

One element describes the areas hit worst:  14th Street, mostly North of U Street,  7th Street, right in the midst of Shaw, and the H Street corridor in NE; all now prominent or virtually adjacent to major restaurant areas in DC.  The difference between then and now is incroyable.  Utter destruction and devastation to popular dining entertainment districts.

There is a fascinating/ educational interactive series at https://wapo.st/1968-dc-riots   it covers much of the detail in the hard copy Washington Post.  Again from the foodie/restaurant perspective, much of what now defines the trendy non downtown restaurant areas in DC were the specific areas that were devastated.

It is a part of American history in which the conflicts that defined that and earlier periods continue to plague our nation.  In that sense its very relevant.

For change I suppose gentrification is a word that summarizes some of the differences over this time span.
