Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band - DC's own 12-piece Afrofunk band playing at local clubs and festivals (2004-present)

I love this band and have seen them a dozen times.  And they kicked some serious ass this past weekend at Pearl Street Warehouse down at The Wharf.

Chopteeth was formed by former Peace Corp volunteer and ethnomusicologist Michael Shereikis.  The band is inspired by Fela Kuti's afrobeat, Ghanaian highlife and other Western African music, with forays into New Orleans jazz, rap, and funk.  They are powered by infectious rhythms and a 5-piece horn section.   They have three albums, one of which is live (excellent), and last year's Bone Reader.

They are the winners of several local music awards (Wammies) including Artist of the Year 2008 & 2009 and best debut recording 2008.
