The Restaurant Week website does not have the January dates up yet, but I came across a site that states that the dates will be 1/9/06 - 1/15/06:

D.C. Winter Restaurant Week 2006 -- When it comes to dining out, Washington, DC is home to some of the world's finest cafés, restaurants and talented chefs. During Jan. 9 to 15, 2006, many of the city's most popular eateries offer special three-course, prix fixe menus at $20.06 for lunch and $30.06 for dinner, in honor of the year.

Does anyone know whether this information is accurate?

Anyone have any good suggestions for RW lunch places within walking distance of the Golden Triangle/Farragut area?

Here are some things I found that are close...suggestions from these?

Galileo is over on 21st and L

Kaz Sushi Bistro at 19th and I

Mark and Orlando's at 20th and P

Palette at 15th and M

Tabard Inn at 17th and N

Taberna del Albardero at 17th and I

Vidalia at 19th and M

Tuesday is set for Notti Bianche and another night that week we're trying to decide between Ceiba and Corduroy (I've been to Corduroy before and it's great, so part of me would love to go back, but part would like to try something new).

Speaking very tenatively, I'd like to hit Vidalia for dinner at some point. I could definitely handle lunch at Notti Bianchi if an open group is going. I need to know very soon so I can take the extra hour off for lunch, unless lunch can be done in an hour. Maybe get another dinner in there.

If anybody wants to go to Vidalia, let me know! I have no particular day in mind.

There are WAY too many options this year. After much thought, we've narrowed to these:

Monday- lunch at Sette Bello, dinner at Corduroy

Tuesday - Acadiana dinner

Wednesday - recovery

Thursday - Poste dinner

Friday - lunch at Kinkead's, dinner at DC Coast

Saturday - Rasika dinner

Sunday - Notti Bianche dinner

I'll post reviews/follow-ups after the gluttony.

Mixed... I think we went in Winter 02 or Winter 03.  The whole menu was available with additional charges for a few items.  All I can really remember is that it wasn't good enough to want to go back again immediately...

I think it is more than "a few" items.

And I remember a four or five dollar upcharge for onion soup. Upcharges for Lobster or Foie are one thing, but an upcharge for a bowl on onion soup is a little out of line.

I ask because I suggested Vidalia-which I love-to a friend for RW and she said that she heard they didn't do it well. She's not much of a food person (definitely in the vein of eating to live rather than living to eat), but works in the neighborhood so I suppose she's heard things from colleagues.

Having been to two RW's at Vidalia (and 2 normal meals), IMHO, Vidalia does it better than most. Take that for what it is worth. They offered the WHOLE menu (with surcharges for some). Comparing that to other places which offer only a subset, they are MUCH better than the rest. I didn't notice a drop-off in food either (portion sizes seemed a bit smaller).

Be aware, it does, as do most restaurants during RW, attract more of the bridge and tunnel crowd (like me). My next door table in August had the trifecta (screaming baby, dude on his cell phone, and them dressed like slobs). It was like an entire Tom Sietsema chat at one table.

Thanks

Nashman

That's how I remembered it as well. For the two of us, there was an up charge on both apps and both entrees (I can't remember if the desserts did or not). When it was all said and done, I think I spent close to $120 with one glass of wine and tip.

It was a great excuse for eating there and the service was probably better than any other place that year (I think we did Ceiba and another place the same week), but the RW pricing was a little misleading (although it was probably less than full price).

As I mentioned before, Galileo was by far the best experience we've had for RW! No upcharges and our food was some of the best we've had in DC. They are, IMHO, unparalleled for RW. Even the server seemed like he'd been to culinary school.

mhberk and bilrus: Ouch....so, would you say Vidalia is a go or no-go for RW?

I thought that the service, the food, and the atmosphere were great! I've heard mixed things on the service, but when we went, we were very impressed (even the young assistants knew to serve on the left and clear from the right - or is it the other way around? - for each of us). Like I said, I'm not sure what the experience would have cost us if we had gone on a regular night, but it WAS one of the more pricey RW experiences we've had. It was also one of the most memorable. If you're on a limited budget (like me), you would probably do better going to two (non-upcharge) restaurants than to Vidalia. But then again, they won't be as memorable.

If I had been to every restaurant that is offered during RW over the years and was looking to repeat restaurants, Vidalia would be one of the first I would repeat. Galileo, on the other hand, is one that I would make sure I got into EVERY year! Not trying to make the comparison between the two, but they are both touted as high 3-4 star restaurants.

We are part of RW.  Full menu.  Any appetiser or salumi or cheese up to $12.00 first course, any dish for the second, any dessert for the finish.  For Don Rockwellians, a free glass of prosecco as well!

We'll be there to take you up on that...to whom do we mention this ad to recieve free promotional item, availible only until supplies last, not responsible for injuries given or received, don't try this at home, etc etc...?

Just mention it at the door when you arrive. If we run out of Prosecco, we can always drop some fizzies into a glass of wine!
