Nick's Inner Harbor Seafood, 1065 S. Charles Street in Cross Street Market, Federal Hill - Closing Jan 7, 2019

Recommended Posts

MissCindy beat me to it! I'd head over to Nick's Inner Harbor Seafood too, which is not in the Inner Harbor - it's at 1065 S. Charles. They expanded last year and now they have over 90 barstools, as well as picnic-style tables, and six tvs - including a couple of big screens - I was assured that the games will be on. They have a sushi bar, raw bar, and fried and steamed seafood, even pit beef coming out of the kitchen. They stay open until 11pm on Friday nights. It doesn't get any more Baltimore than this place.Easy drive to BWI.

I've been there but its been an admittedly long time, while visits have occurred over several decades.  It gives off a great "Ballmore" feeling; casual, seafood, beer, etc.  Large, relaxed and I can't recall leaving without ever being very satisfied, sometimes very crowded, sometimes not.

In reading the Sun article it reminds me of one other instance wherein a landlord seemed to figure out how to screw a tenant and terminate the lease on a premature basis, possibly with the assistance (quiet or not) of the local government;  thereby enabling the landlord to expedite building some higher value real estate project.

Too bad.  Places like Nick's are enjoyable and enhance the fabric of the community...and at times the food is terrific.  As far as I recall the oysters were delish and pleasantly slurpy, always enhanced by the beer.

If this landlord did get the assistance of the local "gendarmes" and come up with a way to force early termination of the lease...then my experience and perspective is that the local government has its head up its arse all because of some theoretical extra tax dollars wherein they can find some other way to accomplish the same without diminishing the social environment. Places like this enhance the community.   (my $0.02 perspective)  :D

As a former resident of the neighborhood, it doesn't seem that most of the residents (that I'm exposed to) are happy about this - it seems that the developer is more or less trying to push them out so they can get a liquor license for the entire facility.

However, apparently this was hanging up at Nick's today

So it could get interesting....

My perspective: Cross Street Market does need a remodeling, but pushing Nick's out like this does not seem to be a good decision

Nick's Inner Harbor Seafood to Close at Cross Street Market by Kevin Lynch on southbmore.com

After ongoing disputes with Caves Valley Partners, the firm redeveloping Cross Street Market, during which time Nick's has mostly remained open, it looks like they will finally be closing on January 7, 2019, after a judge ruled that their current lease is invalid. The owners are considering whether to relocate the restaurant.

At this point, nearly all of the original tenants of Cross Street Market will have permanently relocated or closed by the time renovations are complete. Increased lease rates and the plan to keep half of the market open while construction occurs in the other half haven't helped, as it was always awkward to try and go eat in what was essentially a construction zone. Like JDawg said, the market was long overdue for renovation, but it seems like it will be losing a great deal of what made it unique in the process.

Ugh, this is why I always download and re-upload images - so that when the original source is gone, they'll still be on this website. :(

JDawg, do you remember what it said?
