dr.com Colorado Kitchen Takeover

On Monday, December 3rd, at 6 PM, Gillian and Robin will be hosting a dr.com dinner at Colorado Kitchen. The restaurant is normally closed on Mondays, and they're be opening it up for us as a private event.

There will be two entrees to choose from - Fried Chicken or Fried Catfish (with sides) - and a single dessert, most likely Apple Pandowdy. A few weeks ago, I had the fried catfish, and it was far-and-away the best fried catfish I've ever even - it's awesome!

Beer and wine will be available for an additional charge. I had a glass of Verdejo with the catfish and it was a perfect match, and Gillian recently raved about the sparkling Chardonnay as an accompaniment to the fried chicken. Colorado Kitchen is also serving some of the most interesting beers in town right now.

However, Gillian and Robin are also graciously allowing us to bring our own wines for no additional charge! So it's time to reach deep into your cellars, grab a few bottles, and bring them on in to enjoy. I will ask anyone bringing their own wines to ALSO BRING THEIR OWN STEMWARE AND CORKSCREW. It's only fair, since there's no corkage fee, that we don't expect to use Colorado Kitchen's wine glasses - so open 'em up and pour 'em yourselves.

I'm not sure of the final charge yet, because we're going to need a good 40 people for this to work, and we can go as high as 48 - anything more than that and we'll need to go to a lottery. But we have to have 40, and if we do, the food charges will be $22 per person, plus whatever you spend on beer and wine, PLUS TAX AND GRATUITY (and please, let's make this at LEAST a 20% gratuity since we'll have the privilege of taking over the entire restaurant).

Since this event is inexpensive, I'm going to request that its cash-only, and I'm strongly leaning towards payment in advance by Pay Pal (I'm probably going to pay Colorado Kitchen in advance out of my own pocket, in order to guarantee that they have their minimum required amount).

Please reply here if you're interested. And really now ... how could you not be? This is going to be great!

Cheers!

Rocks.

Count me in, +1

I'd much rather pre-compute tax and tip on the food, call it an even $30, and just have everyone bring cash. Paypal adds unnecessary fees.

Okay, but all I'd ask of everyone is that if they commit, they show up - otherwise, I'm left footing the bill!

Was in town last week! Probably not back until spring. Darn....

Did buy Chef's book last month and we've made her fried chicken recipe 3 times since then. Which might not sound impressive except that we're making 20 pieces of chicken every time. So, you know, 60 pieces of fried chicken in maybe 5 weeks, between the two of us....there's a Gahan Wilson cartoon I remember from Playboy back in the early 70's where two three hundred pounders sit on the front porch with buckets of chicken, and you can see the KFC logo, and Ma says to Pa, "Dang, sometimes I wish they'd never moved next door..." That's me and my wife and Chef's chicken recipe...

Even if she held something back--and I'm not saying she did, but I certainly would have-- what's in the book is EXCELLENT in its simplicity...(we took out a little salt and added a little cayenne)

A little over three years ago CK hosted an event for us over on egullet. The menu is bigger than what we will have next Monday, but the price was more expensive as well. To me, the most important thing to note is that with the exception of about 5-7 people, everyone pictured in that photo are regular members of DonRockwell, even though it was the first event for many. Names changed when we moved over here, but the people remain the same, wonderful, neurotically food obsessed people we all know and love today. If you are on the edge about joining us, here is your chance to dive in and know that if nothing else you will have had a great meal.

Okay folks, time to get off the fence! I promised Gillian final numbers at the end of the day on Wednesday (tomorrow). Even if there's a flurry of last-minute activity, we won't have a lottery for this one: As soon as we hit 48, we're going to close it off.

The 6:00 start time is a problem for me as well. Is that when dinner is really being served or is this something folks can stroll into a bit later?

Good question, and maybe Gillian can answer. Since Gillian's pretty much running a one-woman kitchen, not everything will come out at once - my thoughts were that the people who wanted to be served early could sit on the left side when you walk in, and the people who didn't mind waiting a bit (i.e., wanted to sip some wine first) could sit on the right side. That was just my thought, but I'm not sure how it works in practice.

Me! Having organized other non-DR outings, and though it was stated upthread, everyone on the list should commit themselves to attending, finding their replacement, or mailing $30 (or whatever is the final charge) to Don if they cannot attend. :( Don should not have to make good for a seat that went unused. :(

Last call. We'll be giving Gillian final numbers tonight, and will be taking a waiting list starting tomorrow (but there won't be any drop-outs because everyone who signed up is coming...)

Okay..so we are starting at 6pm. and there are 43 people. I will cook like I'm expecting 50. We can do a reception for 15 min or so with a little sparkling wine and a snack TBD. Then serve dinner at 6:30. Anyone who is late will be seated and served as they come in. They'll just miss the reception.

Menu: Fried Chicken (3pcs light and darK) Corn Bread, Collard Greens

or Fried Catfish with Tartar Sauce, Hush Puppies & cole slaw

Apple Pandowdy

What time do you want us out of there? Midnight? 1 AM?

I'm kidding! I'm kidding! :(

Gifts of wine to the chef are always appreciated! So are X-tra tips to the staff for coming in just for one meal.

Thank you for doing this, Gillian and Robin.

Anyone else want to come? We have a teeny-tiny bit more room, but not much...
