Good Source for Bottled Beer

Recommended Posts

Chevy Chase is indeed great, but it's just barely in the district. If you're looking for something more central, Cairo Liquor store at 17th/Corcoran (across Corcoran from the Safeway) has a pretty good selection for being a small liquor store. The prices sometimes leave something to be desired, but you can occasionally find some good deals. Aside from that I haven't found many places with anything but the basics.

Can anyone recommend a good bottle shop in the District? My local wine shop doesn't have much for beer and Whole Foods is making me crazy.

The Cairo is a good-but-not-great central beer source; when I first moved next door I was pleasantly surprised at their "bomber" selection. I've been careful to track new inventory, though, since a lot of thier stock seems to sit (especially the Belgians). The Glover Park WF has a pretty decent selection of singles plus the benefit of actually being able to sell them as singles and not the "two-packs" that P St is forced to stock (don't get me started ....)

We have an abundant supply of exotic craft brews, micros and imports. We have the entire Bell's line which is available to us at the moment.

With regards to the beers of Fort Collins Brewing Company (i.e. Fat Tire, et al.) it has long been my understanding that the good folks at Fort Collins are absolutely anal about which distributors they are willing to do business with. They place a high priority on shipping conditions, storage conditions, cleanliness and more. Their beer has to be kept refrigerated from the time it leaves Colorado until it actually gets to a retailer or bar/restaurant, they insist on that guarantee. At least this is what I've been told from one long time beer distributor.

The guy handling the beer at Rodman's on Wisconsin has put together a pretty impressive selection at some of the best prices around (currently, most of the Bell's beers, including 2 Hearted Ale are on sale for only $6.99). Picked up some Great Divide Fresh Hop Ale at his recommendation. I think he said he's the only one carrying this in the DC area.

Agreed. He was carrying the Stone Vertical Epics earlier this fall.

Dave does have a great selection and often has the various Bell's beers at a good sale price per 6-pack. The fresh hop is a great beer albeit an expensive one. Other stores do have it in stock though as I have seen it at Chevy Chase and Wine Specialist. Speaking of Wine Specialist they just got in 5 cases of 3F Alpha King and 2 cases of Gumball Head so you might want to get over there before it is gone.

Now if anyone could get the Southern Tier imperial bombers in with any regularity I would be a happy boy.

WholePaycheck on P Street usually has at least a few of these, although they come and go.

Cool, I'll have to swing by P Street. I was recently at the WF Glover Park and was pretty dissapointed at how weak their beer selection had become. Back in the day when Hoppy Jeff and Dave from Rodman's were there it was awesome, but it has been significantly downsized.

I recently picked up a bottle of Southern Tier's Cuvee One (part 1 of 3 in their oak aged series), and have heard good but not great things about it.

I just discovered this place last week. They have one of the nicest beer selections in the city.

Lost Dog has a lot of them, I also really like the Westover Market, but you are in MoCo aren't you?

Yes, but this is a one-time shopping event for a party, so I don't mind heading into DC or NoVA for the trip.

Isn't Lost Dog just a restaurant? I want to buy singles/sixes to take home.

They have a large selection of off-premise too (the Arlington location's storage is sketchy, but Merrifield is fine).

They do have a shop inside the restaurant.  Don't know if they sell singles.  Of course the nice thing is Westover Market is right across the street.  Total Wine is also a short drive, they have a nice selection of singles.

My favorites are Total Wine in McLean and Rodmans, but for more obscure on-offs, try Connecticut Avenue Wine and Liquors which is just north of Dupont Circle on the Northbound side (1529 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036).

Beer, Wine and Company in Bethesda.

I agree that they have a good selection, but you are so close to DC at that point, might as well drive 2 miles down Wisconsin to Rodmans and save some $$$.  Also, you can buy Bell's and Founders in DC.
