Recognized early in his career as “Best French Wine Sommelier” in the United States and honored in an international competition in France as one of the top five sommeliers in the world, Wesson has gone on to become a leading authority on the pairing of food and wine, known for his provocative combinations. He is the author of the award-winning book, “Red Wine with Fish: The New Art of Matching Wine with Food.” He writes for numerous magazines, is a regular contributor to NPR’s “The Splendid Table,” and has been a guest on “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America.” Awarded the prestigious Ambassador’s Award from the European Wine Council in 2003 for his knowledge of wine and his educational efforts, Wesson presents at numerous wine and food events, and is a frequent speaker at the Oscars of the food world, the renowned Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. In an evening of Wines of France, Wesson will take the audience on an entertaining gastronomic tour through the French countryside to sample his personally selected line-up of great French wines paired with French cheeses and other accompaniments. We have not had a discussion on National Geographic food related events and I thought some of you might find it interesting. I do my best to add all food events that members bring to my attention to our calendar. I've been a longtime reader of donrockwell.com and thought this was as good a time as any to finally make a post. As NGS only hosts 2-3 food or wine events a year, I'll probably spend more of my time discussing my personal endeavors. Regardless, I've been to a cheese event at National Geographic which Josh spoke at. I really enjoyed his speaking, and definitely enjoyed the eating and drinking. Regardless, I've been to a cheese event at National Geographic which Josh spoke at. I really enjoyed his speaking, and definitely enjoyed the eating and drinking. I was at the cheese event, too. Steven Jenkins from Fairway Market in NY. It was his second appearance at Geographic and anyone on this board who loves cheese or has been to one of Jill's sessions at Cheesetique will want to go if he returns again next year. (We'll hear it here first. Right, culocho? ) Anyway, Josh Wesson was fantastic in opening for Jenkins. Engaging and funny. Frankly, though, I think the $70 pricetag for this event is really steep. Too steep, in fact and it's the main reason I'm not going. And the wine availability (that is to say, quantities served) at the cheese event earlier this year was so stingy that I had to complain to one of the organizers at the end of it. The stinginess at that event with a $50 pricetag has me very wary of what food and wine events I'll go to at Geographic. Which is a shame, because between Josh Wesson, Steven Jenkins and Michael Jackson (beer and whisky lectures/tastings) there's a lot of fun and knowledge to be gained. I am very much in the infant stages of learning about wine, what better way to start then attending an event hosted by someone so informed.
