leleboo
"Under the Constitution, correctional facilities can’t withhold food. Nothing in the Eighth Amendment, however, says the food has to taste good." Also of interest: Aramark's prison-food subsidiary makes this.

MsDiPesto
Well, there's one way to lose weight! Don't think we'll see a Nutraloaf Truck prowling the streets soon....or will we? You know, with the right marketing...
lperry
Ugh. I can't, however, figure out how this thing is more punishing than oatmeal and bologna.
leleboo
Ugh. I can't, however, figure out how this thing is more punishing than oatmeal and bologna. I think it has to be this: "Nutraloaf is a culinary triumph; any recipe that renders all 13 of its ingredients completely mute is some kind of miracle." Oatmeal may be bland, but bologna definitely at least has a flavor, and might be one that a lot of people like (or at least find more than tolerable -- yes, even the heavily processed kind). With Nutraloaf, it's not that it tastes bad; it's that it doesn't taste, period. It reminds me of the bit from A Wrinkle in Time, when Charles Wallace hasn't let IT into his mind, and the turkey dinner tastes, to him, like sawdust. I don't know, but it totally weirds me out. Then 95% of the veggie burgers on the market are miraculous! That's a taste testing event I don't care to repeat.
