Joe Riley
I know that this isn't one of Don's favorite wineries, but this little "Super Tuscan" from the Bolgheri area is well-worth consideration. The 2003 is 70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. It surprised me by being a well-made and attractive wine despite my general preference for more traditional Italian wines. To be fair, Bolgheri is a modern region, so the wine merely reflects the local sensibilities. I'd go so far as to say that it would fit right in with good Bordeaux in the same price range. What IS that price range, you ask? Not to be coy, but it is MUCH cheaper than either Ornelaia or Sassicaia (also from Bolgheri). I went back to this bottle over several hours and noticed that it was a little riper and sweeter with time. Not a flaw, merely an observation. One of it's more attractive modern aspects is, it is organic. The family uses no pesticides or herbicides in their vineyards. For more information on this winery, please go here.
