To those who say, "Sure, great defense, but barely above-average offense,"

Brooks Robinson had more hits than anyone in the entire American League during the 1960s.

I listen to "Good Food on the Road" , with the LA Times food critic Jonathan Gold.  They are very short, usually a review of one restaurant. He has a gift of evocative language about food, it makes me very jealous of the LA food scene, especially Korean, Japanese and Mexican cuisine.

I like some BBC stuff for culture.  Most often "In Our Time", which covers a topic of history or culture for an hour with posh sounding British academics.

For music, I like La Montana Rusa , which is in Spanish, so I don't understand most of the dialog, but the music he plays is cool, if you like jazz.  Incidentally, it means "The Russian Mountain," which is what spanish and french call roller coasters, based on early russian sled rides.  Fun fact, when the 'real' motorized roller coasters came to russia, the called them 'american mountains.'

That is not how I read it. I took it to mean they will now auto- tip for you and you don't need to tip extra. Was it $150 out the door before? I would expect the new total cost to be $165 + 10% tax + 20% tip = $214.50.

Otherwise it would probably say "tip included; no further tipping necessary."

I was reading about "This Land Is Your Land," and didn't realize that Woody Guthrie had sarcastically written it in 1940 because he was tired of hearing Kate Smith singing "God Bless America" - instead of the lyrics, "This land was made for you and me," the article implies that the lyrics were originally, "God blessed America for me" (which has the same number of syllables and the same cadence).

So funny you mentioned this. I was there a few weekends ago, and stopped in for recommendations as to where to go until dinner service. The exact response was given by the staff at Vin.  We received  suggestions for returning by 4: 30 to line up for the first seating. Glad we did. This spot is a charming wine cafe that is known for it's pizza and creative use of seasonal ingredients.

We did a lot of walking from our hotel (Alexander Inn, on 12th & Spruce) during our 4 day stay.  To the Art Museum, to Old Town, to the Italian Market and up/down Broad St during their celebration.  All in all, Philly reminds me a lot of Brooklyn -- in a good way.  At any rate, we stuck with 3 of our 4 above choices for dinner & enjoyed all of our meals:

So true.  We've been in Kauai for five days, and with Foodland a mile away, I've eaten poke for over half of our meals so far.  And it's only $9.99/pound if you buy two or more pounds, which hasn't been hard for us to finish!

And then that was followed by the "Why Not?" '89 season where they went down to the wire for the East!  That damn song still pops into my head every once in a while when I see the logo from that era.

By measure of WAR/fWAR Chris Davis is on track to have the worst season EVER in MLB history (going back to 1901).  THE WORST PLAYER-SEASON OF ALL TIME.  The O's will still be paying him $4.5M in deferred money in 2032.  They will pay him $1.4M in 2037.  He is the new Bobby Bonilla.

Manny Machado is gone next year.  Things are not looking up in Charm City.

The Birchmere.  Established 1966.  They serve food. The Seldom Scene Thursday residency at the original location was the place to be.  We went dozens of times, but not enough.

I'm noticing more closures than at any time since before the Great Recession.

You are correct, ArlFred, and thanks for the tip about BonChon in Frederick also.

Now that both Family Meal and Graffiato have closed in Richmond, I wonder if Richmonders have a feeling similar to we do in DC with numerous New York closures.

Frederick location closed a couple weeks ago. Bummer.

I enjoyed a first visit to Centrolina on Friday.  After visiting several art museums downtown and having some time to kill before hitting Woolly Mammoth, the bar was a great place to kill a couple hours. And afternoon drinks turned into early evening dinner.

Tanpopo has apparently reopened after the renovation. It has been a while since our last visit around a year ago (since we now live in Greenville, SC). We decided to stop by for lunch on our way out of town. The menu is quite different than before, and I'm not a fan of the changes. We didn't really care for the sushi today, but the ramen was still excellent. Just a quick review as we are continuing our 3-week trip up to New  England.

In celebration of Capital Pride, we went to the Dabney.  We asked for some recommendations and our waitress rattled off 3 vegetarian dishes.  So we ignored her recs.

Five friends and I needed a last minute dinner reservation and this was one of the only decent options available same-day.  I had been here a few times before, but not since the chef de cuisine had left.  Our meal was pretty disappointing.  The place wasn't crowded, but our service wasn't attentive.  The food lacked pop, was expensive, and the portions were small.  Our drinks took forever (as they, weirdly, have every single time I've been there), but I really really enjoyed my drinks (it had sherry and brandy and rye I think).

Overall, this was never the best value proposition, but right now I would just avoid it.
