  1. Texas governor suggested what the schools might look into is having fewer doors! Yeah, it's the number of doors to blame! Too many doors theory of gun violence Also blamed it on violent video games, which teens around the world play only they don't have access to guns as in Texas.
  2. Reminds me of jokingly telling someone once that we thought our hotel was going be a nice, quiet little spot on Bourbon Street.
  3. I wonder what the jambalaya is going to be like? That's a country dish, hearty, a meal in one -- not a side! What's going to be the meat or seafood in it? We used to have it with blackbirds, believe it or not! Didn't say I liked it! ha!
  4. Ha Ha! Freudian slip! Of course I meant cookware that sticks. But it seems as if NOBODY's getting held too accountable anymore. I don't like this "America needs me" attitude. I think that's chief of staff Kelly's problem. As little as we like today's politicians, just think of the 1800s when this was exactly the attitude of so many of them! I don't see this as comparable in any way to the old concept of "noblesse oblige." That's the attitude people hated about the Bushes and what got the Bush and Clinton dynasties tossed aside. We don't believe in a noble class. In the case of Trump that's remarkable. It was like electing Jerry Springer. Not exactly noble. Apologies in advance for being too partisan.
  5. Yes, this black truffle pizza is great! Had it with bacon but your version sounds really good! We go once a month. Saturdays get there at 5:00 or else wait if you want to sit! Looking forward to summer and their salads!
  6. I entirely accept his explanation that it's about spending more time with his family (sic). Trump would wipe the floor with Ryan, Just picture all the video playback of him huffing and puffing his outrage over Trump during the 2016 campaign then him shaking Trump's hand over harming the Affordable Care Act and gutting the EPA! Teflon for Trump, but non-stick cookware for anybody else, it seems to me. I can't understand it.
  7. Just opened a week ago. Polka Deli. Grocery store, meat store, and take out sandwich shop. High hopes since this is in our area. Made fresh Polish sausage sauce piquante Sunday and it turned out good. Used their Hunter's sausage in place of Tasso for crawfish fettucine last week and was pleased.
  8. Cafe des Amis in Breaux Bridge apparently closed. I must have missed that. A new restaurant has opened in its location, Cafe Sydnie Mae.
  9. Sounds like its own subforum, IMO. Maybe Stand Up or Skit Comedy. We already have Film and TV for comedy movies and series, but not Stand Up. Maybe Skit Comedy would go under TV?
  10. What did you have for dessert at Borgne? They are excellent! I see from the online menu that they change them up. When we went a couple of years ago there was one with Nutella!
  11. We went to Dom's in 2016 for a half and half (shrimp/oyster). Still talking about it. I'd be surprised if it were closed. That would have been news. YES, off the beaten path but the neighborhood felt totally safe to me. I am no poboy expert, me, but I liked Johnny's in the French Quarter roast beef better than Parkway's.
  12. Have not ever tried Central's (sacrilege!) but I have to say Napoleon House's is very good! And a good Ramos Gin Fizz! Alas Irene's Cuisine recently either closed or is moving! The sausage lasagna was out of sight!
  13. La Casita in Takoma Park on Piney Branch. Is that Montgomery or Prince Georges? It's close to there AND DC. Tacos, pupusas, tamales, breakfast with chorizo, smoothies with Central American fruit. Inform us on Annapolis!
  14. "At best, purchasing a firearm was a way to buy membership in “real America.” At worst, purchasing a firearm was yet another way to “own the libs.” " Scares me that anybody thinks I need to be owned. I am fast piling up a list of states I will not visit because of their politics. And I have never done that before in all my life.
  15. Why does the NRA think their gun owners EVER EVER EVER need magazines loaded with 30-40 rounds!?? THAT is your recipe for mass killings. Let's not even talk yet about what the Las Vegas shooter was able to stockpile. 500 wounded! That man was at WAR with America. Protect us! If you listen to the NRA's rhetoric it's not even about guns. It's about freedom and patriotism. And that is so wrong! We need better rhetoric about freedom. Why do they get away with "freedom to shoot 30 rounds in under a minute" but we get nowhere with "freedom FROM danger"? Expose these socially irresponsible spokesmen for investors in gun manufacturers! And heaven help me if my 403b has investments in any of them!
  16. "I feel the need right now to say one thing: "I don't want your hunting rifles, and I don't want your recreational guns." Let's start with that AND assurances that law abiding citizens have a right to own a firearm to protect their families and properties against criminals out to harm us. Bear in mind that when the 2nd Amendment was adopted we were still needing firearms to protect us from real BEARS and all kinds of natural threats! And to supply us with game meat in order to even survive! Don't need that so much in 2018 Colesville, Maryland! The subject of personal ownership of weapons was NOT even under discussion when the Bill of Rights was up. It was taken for granted that you NEEDED guns! We would not be here today without our ancestors using them for lawful purposes! How likely is it that even these wise Founders could foresee a time when BEARS were not such a danger? Or the need to hunt for survival? I say little to none. Private ownership was not even part of the equation for the 2nd Amendment, I think. The Heller SCOTUS decision is in my opinion highly flawed and COULD be overturned like the Drew Scott and Plessy v Ferguson decisions. A new law supporting hunters in exchange for concessions on near-machine gun like assault weapon regulation COULD be possible, i think. ETA: I do not own a gun. Never will. So don't blow me off for speaking up for self defense! My family has been lucky enough not to need guns. If that makes me an ELITE then ordinarily I would hammer you but if you knew my low background you'd know referring to me as ELITE might be the nicest thing anybody's ever said about me, believe me! (wink)
  17. "Poor Shot" LaPierre NEEDS high capacity magazines with 30-40 rounds? For hunting? For sport shooting? For defense against tyranny? It's all smoke screen. These kinds of high capacity magazines are just waiting to fall into the hands of the next mass shooter, school setting or not.
  18. Pitchers doing so well in 1968 they made it necessary to lower the mound, largely because of Bob Gibson (and perhaps 30-game winner Denny McLain?) IIRC. Johnny Bench revolutionized catching by doing it one handed and putting his throwing hand behind his back to avoid foul tips.
  19. I would not be surprised if the voices of high schoolers in Parkland spur something like a #metoo movement. THEY are the ones being affected by gun violence in the schools. They demand to know why anybody, mentally ill or not, is guaranteed a right to an assault or semi-assault weapon by a Second Amendment designed with muskets and guerilla militias in mind at a time when the British could have crushed our newly formed country. We are not living in those times anymore, I think some ideologues on this topic are going to find themselves more and more out of sync with a new generation. I bet a lot of people are still surprised by how quickly things have changed with gender and sexuality politics. I see no reason not to hope things could change dramatically on gun laws. (By the way, call it gun laws instead of CONTROL! The VERY term control is loaded. We have laws, regulations about many things and they are not called CONTROL. Are food safety and occupational safety and child labor and environmental protection laws called CONTROL? Of course not. It looks to me like somebody is trying to make the very concept of sensible gun laws sound like Communist Dictatorship, which is really rich! )
  20. How is the NRA THIS powerful? Their arguments can be clearly topped with reasoned responses. After the Las Vegas disaster NO ONE can oppose bump stocks that make a semi-automatic rifle into a machine gun? 500 people were wounded and NOTHING changed? Maybe it's because the House term of 2 years is too short. Congressmen are in a perpetual state of raising campaign money. Would this move at all if the term were 4 years rather than 2?
  21. Any movement here on Kelly since last August? Did I say I think he is very contemptuous of civilians, which does not even comport with his military mission? Was he himself "LAZY as a Dreamer" (think "DRUNK as an Astronaut") about the character of his chief assistant? Wow, was that ugly to imply a lot of the Dreamers are just plain lazy? Was he referring to Dreamers who actually served in our military? Because there ARE some. What does he propose to do with them? Deport them? I thought military people were the greatest people in the world! Remember that kind of talk? You don't have to be a partisan Democrat to reject such an uncivil tone from Mr. Kelly. I am just blowing back here. Don't mean to be uncivil. Just as HARSH as possible!! As HARSH as him! Did he himself "get off his ass" to care about wife beatings by his assistant? Does not look like it! This is mind boggling. The mind boggles at this. Do NOT understand the respect for him "chaperoning" a man such as T. Let T fail. He MUST fail for the good of us, in my opinion. Am I a target of the people T supporters want to "get back at" by voting for him? 'Fraid so! If you knew me you would see how ridiculous that is.
  22. Sorry to hear this. What a great guy! Before he remodeled and renamed it Drift we went to one of those chef's table dinners and had a wonderful time with him. Best octopus and best galette i ever had. Hope to see him at Fishnet in College Park/Berwyn Heights, which is closer to me.
