  1. There is a huge loss of quality when crabmeat is frozen, in my opinion. You shouldn't have to buy frozen this time of year anyway. Costco has fresh jumbo lump from North Carolina, not pasteurized, for about $26/lb. Wegmans is carrying fresh non-pasteurized crabmeat right now but it is over $30/lb. Regarding Captain Pells, you need to call ahead and reserve jumbos for an excellent crab experience. Yes, they are $10 each but 1/2 dozen satisfies my wife and I just fine. It's a better deal than their all you can eat mediums for $45/person and 3 or 4 jumbos will fill you up.
  2. Let me just say, where I come from "way up north" is Shreveport!
  3. This will be old news to some, but I just had Wonderful crabs at Mikes Crabhouse on Riva Rd, near Annapolis, for the 4th weekend in a row. Prices are reasonable, considering, and while I was able to get limited jumbos twice (@ $96/doz), the large crabs are very satisfying @ $70/doz. I live in Springfield and this is a 45-50 minute ride and very scenic if you use Central Ave instead of Rt. 50. Crabs are from Louisiana. Yesterdays jumbos were so nice, I could only eat 4 and was stuffed. And I am a serious crab eater.
  4. I misspoke. I meant Capt Pell get's excellent jumbos, but very expensive. As I mentioned in earlier post, I am not a Capt White fan at Maine ave. Jessie Taylors is my recommendation. Got very nice extra large from Clarence for $120 for 1/2 bushel this past weekend..
  5. Capt White gets excellent Jumbos from Louisiana/Texas but they are truly expensive. If getting them to go, bring an ice chest to put the box in. They will stay warm for a couple of hours.
  6. For Maine Ave, Jessie Taylor is the best vendor for crabs, in my opinion. I am not a Capt White fan. If he's working, Clarence is the man to talk to at Jessie Taylors.
  7. Thank you for the warm welcome. Though we don't get into the district as often as we would like, we have checked out Bayou and were pleased. Regarding mudbugs, we have an annual boil with 60 to 80 people. My source is LaCrawfish.com, a farm raised crawfish business owned by an old friend. Their specialty is excellent quality and customer service and they can deliver directly to your door for a reasonable price. They are in good supply from Dec/Jan all the way through July and they have become the largest shipper in the state. I recommend them highly. I'm sure there are members of this blog that are already familiar. The best cajun food is served at our house , but we enjoy finding good seafood, especially shellfish, and well prepared food of any kind. I look forward to using this blog as a resource and hope to be able to contribute as well.
  8. Hello, my name is Dean and I love food. I grew up in Louisiana and learned about eating delicious food at a very early age. When I moved to the DC area many years ago, I found if I wanted good Louisiana food, I had to cook it myself. It's been a wonderful journey ever since. My wife (a New Orleanean) and I love to cook and experimenting is one of our great pleasures. We got ourselves a sous vide machine for Christmas and have cooked some amazing meat dishes with it. I also love smoking food. Ever had deviled eggs with smoked yolks? Herbsaint (a Donald Link Nola restaurant) served one as an amuse bouche and I couldn't wait to get home and try it. In fact, anytime we have something spectacular at a fine restaurant, we are committed to reproducing it in our kitchen. Even our failures are generally very good. We love doing wine paired dinners for our friends and use the occasion to try new things out. I stumbled on Don Rockwell surfing food and look forward to learning and sharing
