  1. Bistro Bethem has been my customer since i first began selling to restaurants...sad to hear the Bethems are selling the place but wish them the best. They have a 5 year old and a 9 year old to keep them busy in addition to their other restaurant.  Last serving will be 8/27.

New ownership is Jacqueline Hartman, executive chef at the Kenmore Inn. New name and concept still under wraps.

Interesting, so that's probably what killed off my fairly productive rhubarb patch.  It was in a relatively low spot and I thought they caught a late summer fungal disease and didn't recover next year.  I will have to try again in an elevated bed.  I have just the spot too, now that the local bunnies nibbled my newly planted epimediums and heucheras to nubs, despite generous doses of animal deterrent.

I tend to lose my rhubarb every 5 years or so- we are so much on the fringe of its preferred climate that it no longer surprises me. I actually had decent luck growing it as an annual from seed a couple years ago- you just wind up with rhubarb out of "season".

    Bunnies= hasenpfeffer!

  3. Lonzo has court vision like very few- the comparisons to Jason Kidd on the offensive end of the court are apt in my opinion. He's no worse as a shooter then Kidd was coming out of college. Where he may suffer most is on the defensive end of the court as he does not seem particularly fleet of foot despite having good anticipation on passing lanes- see De'Aaron Fox taking his lunch money in the NCAA tournament last season.  Personally I think Fox would have been the best of the 3 point guard prospects if he hadn't fallen into dysfunctional basketball Hell in Sacramento- now he'll be looked to to make something of a franchise that is quite possibly the most poorly managed in the league. I have a hard time buying Markelle Fultz stock simply because he was a college point guard for a team which won 9 games with the majority of those victories being over schools outside the Power 5 conferences- not much elevation of the team there.

Lavar's influence will decrease now that Lonzo will be playing with/for grown ups. He'll be busy making Steve Alford's life miserable when Son 2 can't get off the bench at UCLA.

  4. It will be Cleveland/GS (barring Lebron injury or injury to 2 of Golden State's big 4) until Lebron packs up and moves to LA to play for the Clippers where he and Chris Paul try to figure out how to each have a basketball when there is only one available. (Jerry West to the Clippers and Steve Ballmer's commitment to building his own digs instead of staying in Staples Center had me thinking about this earlier today on deliveries.)

Lebron will be retired by the time the Freak is ready to compete for a championship.

Fierce rivalry. I enjoyed the last game only in so far as it was reasonably competitive with Cleveland more or less in striking distance from the time they fell behind in the 2nd quarter.  They couldn't get over the hump.  Lebron carried them again.  Thompson actually scored some points, JR Smith did about as well as he can do, Kyrie seemed to falter and reported that he hurt his leg then back, and Love sucked on the scoring front.  Cavs reserves did nothing of note.

GS played their death squad of the 5 best players most of the game and ultimately all that talent was unmatchable with Durant being a killer.  Even with GS being so good I still think its a potentially competitive match up but to get there it requires the best Cleveland has to offer all the time.  Durant really rounded out his game this series with points, effective scoring, defense and rebounding.  He rose to the occasion.   He was like Lebron.  In this generation of basketball I think that is the ultimate compliment.

Sort of reminds me of the mid 80's with great Celtic and Laker teams consistently competing at the top of the sport.  Its simply the competitiveness that is similar; the nature of the game and the types of stars and skills are extremely different.

I sort of hope they do it again next year....except if the Wiz steal a star or two from somewhere and break in from the East.

Pretty likely we see it again next year with the exact same results. I question whether anyone can beat the Warriors in their current makeup playing as much isolation on offense as the Cavs do, despite the fact that Lebron and Kyrie are probably the 2 most effective players in the league at it. It's too much work. Cleveland looks a lot like Miami was beginning to look when Lebron left- all the role players are getting old and not particularly athletic. They could use some young long springy guys but Lebron has shown repeatedly he trusts older guys.

  6. My grandmother used to make both dandelion and blackberry wine. We used to sneak in and drink it when we were kids. I remember the blackberry as being Kool-Aid like and the dandelion tasting strongly of something i did not like (alcohol) at the age of 10.

  7. Slipping to the 4 seed may actually help now that it looks like Boston may be the 1. I think the Wiz match up better with the Celtics than they do with either the Cavs or the Raptors. (I am still of the opinion that the East goes through Cleveland and also of the opinion that with their full compliment of players on the court the Raptors are the second best team in the East.) Plus the Wiz and the Celtics genuinely cannot stand one another which will make for good viewing. (Of course I am assuming the Wiz can take care of business against either the Hawks or the Bucks.)

The Cavs have managed to play down for so long at this point that they have done something i thought impossible at the start of the year- generate legit interest in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Can they flip a switch and compete with the Warriors? I don't think so. Can Lebron beat the rest of the East by himself yet again? Probably.

Heading towards the beltway on the Dulles Toll Road, I just saw the Beltway Hot Lanes from the Toll Road to I-395 South priced at ...

sit down before you read this ...

    $20.35.

...and likely worth every penny. My policy on my once a week foray into the belly of the beast is this: the higher the toll, the more likely I am to pay it.

  9. I used to chase Hopslam every year. (don't drink anymore) The last time I had some in my greedy little hands was a sixer a friend brought me from NC after he paid some outrageous price for it. He gave it to me at an event and I put it in my cooler for the day. The cardboard carrier got a little wet and the bottom dropped out on my carport when I was taking it in the house. Zero survivors.:(

Canned Heat's Al Wilson had a fine falsetto! On the Road Again

Influenced by blues great, Skip James: Hard Time Killing Floor Blues (Canned Heat's friend John Fahey "rediscovered" Skip James and brought him to Newport Folk Festival and a late in life revived career performing). Alternate verse: Ain't got no money now, can't pay my rent. Preacher gonna tell you it's heaven sent.

In the mid-80's I lived for a while in Eugene, OR and worked the door at various bars. It was a common experience to drive Canned Heat guitarist Henry Vestine home at the end of the night when he had had one (or nine) too many. Nice guy who could never manage his vices.

These are organic, so they deteriorate faster, but they sure seem fresh to me.

Given that there has not been anything done to either potato in between the ground and your local store I do not believe there is any evidence that organic produce deteriorates more quickly. (if you have some I would love to read it.) Greens tend to last better in fact due to their somewhat slower growth producing thicker cell walls- I do not see why the same would not hold for taters.

  12. Scrapping together a solid bench has been Ernie's strong point prior to this year. If there is a weaker bench in the league this year I have not seen it.

Beal is going to drag the team down with him if he can't stay on the floor (and I'm betting he can't). His contract is not Ernie's fault though- the Wiz had no alternative on that one.

Beal, however, is one of the only competent draft picks Ernie has ever made. Even when I was defending him (E) he was lousy at recognizing young talent.

I really wish everyone on the team other than Wall and Gortat would just go away.
