  1. Sorry for my very delayed reply to this. We ended up at Plume at the Jefferson as it was close to the conference. The meal was enjoyable and the service was excellent. I worked with MJ in booking the dinner and she was a pleasure. I had given her the wrong date of the dinner (was juggling scheduling too many dinners...) and she was wonderful in helping to fix my mistake. We ended up in the wine cellar, and my clients were very happy with the location as well as the food.
  2. Piggybacking on this - I'm looking for something similar for 20 with just a couple of week's notice. Any suggestions? Not too concerned about price point. Thank you!
  3. If you want to treat yourself, you could try for the bar at Pineapple and Pearls. They frequently have seats for one at the bar, and the menu is $150 (but does not include drinks).
  4. I also dined at Duke's Counter last week, hopeful that the new place would have better service and drinks than the original Duke's. I agree that it was perfectly good. Our server forgot to put in our meals, so we were there much longer than anticipated, but completely understand that this happens and the bartender (manager, maybe?) was excellent in responding to the situation. My burger was very overcooked, but my brother and dad very much enjoyed their sandwiches. My brother said he didn't like the bahn mi as much as at the other location. The fries are excellent! The cocktail and beer menu is still uninspiring. I was hopeful that a bigger bar would bring changes, but they seem to have stayed in their comfort zone.
  5. St. Arnold's on Jefferson has a great happy hour, too: $11 mussel pots, $5 1⁄2 Liters of Palm, Schofferhofer, Radeberger, and Ommegang Witte. Their sandwiches are also delicious. Usually I'll split a pot of mussels and a sandwich with a dining companion. The service at this location is markedly better than their Cleveland Park location, which is less busy and I believe has a longer happy hour.
  6. I went to Sovereign with a group of friends last Sunday night and was really impressed. Huge and flavorful mussels and crisp, proper Belgian fries. I had the burger, which was excellent. A friend had the coq au vin, which was succulent. I'm a huge fan of Belgian beer. We had a bottle of the Cantillon Fou' Foune to start, and it was one of the best beers I have ever had. The bartenders are as helpful as at Churchkey, but the food is so much more appetizing. We're excited to go back to try the other Cantillon bottles and other beers on the menu.
  7. I was so excited to try this out for my birthday dinner and was very disappointed. First, the good: the cocktails were excellent and it was really fun to watch the bartenders at work. The space is beautiful, and I loved the courtyard and its firepits. We spent an hour after our reservation waiting for our spots at the chef's counter. There were at least six people behind us who had been waiting nearly as long as us who were just as frustrated. The hostesses, who were flippant when asked when they expected to seat us and were way underdressed for the venue (one was wearing a jersey and the other a crop top and converse sneakers. All of the servers were impecably dressed, as were the bartenders), did bring us two glasses of prosecco while we were waiting. It was a nice gesture at the time (about 20 minutes after we arrived), but didn't make up for the wait. At long last we were brought to a table squeezed in between two couples instead of the chef's counter we had reserved without an explanation or apology about the change in table. We were told we could wait more, but it would be at least a half an hour more. After an unsatisfactory conversation with the manager, we decided to leave instead of giving the restaurant more of our money. We were prepared to drop significant (for us!) money on dinner and drinks and were really, really disappointed in the service we received. We asked a few times about the status of our seats and were told the couple eating was just finishing up, that they had just dropped the check, and then again that they were approaching the end of the meal. It was clear they gave away our seats at the chef's counter to another couple who had been waiting. I've never been to a restaurant with prix fixe menu (or really any restaurant) run so far behind. I'm not sure what the point of a reservation system or a prix fixe menu is if the restaurant can't stay on schedule. It may have been an off night, but we would have been understanding if the hostesses or manager had given us an explanation. Instead, the hostesses seemed annoyed to interact with us and other patrons. We ended up at Maketto, which wasn't the meal we had wanted but was delicious and quick. The service there, as always, was fantastic and the everyone incredibly friendly. There are so many options in DC but everyone at Masseria behaved as if they were the only game in town.
  8. Bean Hollow seems to fit the bill. I've only been for breakfast, but their sandwich selection always has looked good.
  9. Clyde's Restaurant Group is very good with allergies and is very careful about any cross contamination (I waitressed there for a summer several years ago). If they're at the Smithsonian, maybe you could meet them at Old Ebbitt?
