  1. Earlier in the chat vegetable wrapped rolls were mentioned. I'm very interested in this because I can't eat rice, but used to really like sushi. This goes out to the chef or any readers- how do I order these? What is their name? Any good places? Best, Ed
  2. So I've been playing around with omelettes a lot recently. Wondering ig anyone has any interesting recipes/combos. Specialty meats, chicken, pancetta, salami? Veggies? onions, mushrooms, peppers and of course the key ingredient CHEESE. What is the best cheese for omelettes? Melatability, texture, taste. Best, Ed
  3. Circle bistro were real jerks to me last night. I had a 7:30 reservation, I called mid week to add someone to my 7:30 reservation. Last night I get to Circle Bistro and the door is locked. The bartender opens the door and says that they are closed. I tell him we have a 7:30 reservation. He tells me they are closed, the last reservation was at 5:30 and to try Dish. I inform him we have a reservation, that I confirmed, and that I don't want to go to Dish because I don't like it. He doesn't believe I have a reservation. We go to the bar to wait for our third. I ask if he has a zagat guide so we could call other restaurants to see if we could get in, he says he does not, mean while his back is too us for this entire time, he does not try to engage in conversation except to advocate going to Dish about five more times, each time I tell him that I don't like Dish. I go outside to use my cell phone to call restaurants-after he does not offer us the use of the house phone, or make any effort to fix their mistake and get us in somewhere not owned by the restaurant. We get into vidalia and our thrid arrives and we leave. He never offered us a drink even though we were sitting at the bar for 20 minutes. He had his back to us the whole time. I would have paid for a drink, but he made no indication that the bar was open. I think he should have comped us a drink at least and been a lot more helpful after they screwed up- ofered the use of their phone to call other places, or called himself.
  4. Amazing dinner last night. After getting royally screwed by Circle Bistro, look up that post, Vidalia was good enough to fit us in. First thing I noticed on walking in, Vidalia smelled very nice, they had fresh cut flowers, and a pleasant but not overpowering perfume. The new spring menu was fantastic. To start we shared the "pig in a blanket" which was an interesting deep freid crust filled with hamy bits, covered with a quail type egg and red eye gravy- very tasty, good combo of flavors and textures. We also had a side of the macn'cheese. I don't know how anyone could go to vidalia and not get the mac and cheese, the top part is crusty and good and the bottom if a little soupy is so rich with the ham bits in it. I'm drooling just writing about it. I also like how they use big macaroni, that are easy to stab with a fork. I had a mint julep which although not quite minty enough for me, CAME OUT IN A SILVER/PEWTER JULEP CUP this is how you do it people! Real julep style, it was sweet but packed a punch. For the mains we had, the lamb rib eye, perfectly cooked as ordered. A great piece of lamb with goood flavor. I had the steak rib eye, two ways, the filet portion was in a port reduction/peaunut? sauce that was AMAZING, the loin part had a bernaise sauce, and there was a green chimichurri in the middle between the two, great mix of flavors. With some very nice potatoes on the side. The standout dish had to be my godmothers Southern cassoulet. It was not traditional cassoulet but rather deconstructed. It was two pieces of pork loin served on top of a lima bean succatash with a sausage on the side- but it was amazing- I stole as many bites as I could. The sausage had a great flavour and consistency, the pork tasted almost like a spare rib type pork, and the beans were rich but also had a freshness to them that lightened the dish rather than weighing it down. For desert we split the chocolate caremel tort- I'm not a big chocolate person but the ladies were agog over it. I focused on the cookies and cream, very light round caramalized sugar wafer cookies filled with a cofee flavored cream and a cube of espresso jello. AMAZING, great mix of textures and tastes, light and flufffy, but with a good crispness from the wafers. I also ordered tea with desert and it was some of the best tea I've ever had, the chamilie had visible hunks of fruits and herbs in it. Great meal.
  5. Hi, I have been unable to find any restaurants serving ham tomorrow (mini rant: why not? Ham is awesome, it cann be used for more than flavoring, it can stand up on its own as a main course, it is easy to make, and it is a traditional Easter food) So I bought a ham steak and am planning on cooking it after church. Does anyone have any good recipes? How long do I cook it? I plan on serving it with scrambled eggs, and home made apple sauce. Any other ideas or suggestions(keeping in mind grocery stores are now closed and so things would have to be common household items)? Best, Ed
  6. On a slightly different note: Does anyone know a place serving up a good easter ham on Sunday for lunch/brunch? It could be baked ham, or ham steak, or even a carving station, I just want to be able to have easter ham. As a general complaint- why don't more places serve ham as a stand alone dish as mentioned above instead of just using it to flavor things? It is so good. In short- I love ham. Best, Ed
  7. Wow- this place is awesome! I was a little put off at first by the gruff counter guy- who after I ordered a Chicken Tikka roll handed me one that had been pre-wrapped. Then I tried the food. The chicken was moist, flavorful and fantastic. The naan was great, nice and chewy, with none of the bitter aftertaste naan sometimes has. The sauces were standout, I got one of each. The mango sauce was sweet, and the perfect accompaniment to the chips. The cucumber/yoghurt green sauce had a nice tang and was a good cool down to the fiery red sauce, that packed some heat, with good flavor. The chips are my new addiction. Home made potato chips with an old bay style seasoning on them. Amazing. All this and a soda for 7.50 including tax.
  8. I went for the lunch buffet. The good news is that the staff were very helpful and friendly, getting me a special carry-out conatainer for the soup, chatting, being nicer than they had to be. The bad news was the food. I was there on Friday, northern India day- I think. The options were a pale green soup- that was tangy and unapealing. Terrible roti, that tasted like they had been leftover from the night before. Some kind of potato in cream sauce- I don't like cream sauces so I didn't try that one. Potatoes with roasted peppers and tomatoes-think Indian homefries- they were ok, nothing special, I liked the peppers in them. A dish that was labelled as mushrooms but was really mostly spinach-was tasty but too salty for my taste, although the few bites of mushroom in the dish were good. There was a dish of the kind of beans you get in chilli- sorry I'm bad with names- and I know real chilli should not have beans- with tomatos and onion. That was very good espescially with the rice. The rice was plain long grain rice with nothing mixed in. There was a soupy looking indian desert. Over-all not worth it. Best, Ed
  9. Have you all eaten at Froggy recently? For the past 4 years I've been at GW the food has always been terrible, and really really slow to come out. Go to drink not to eat. I vote for thai place.
  10. Hi, Frank Bruni mentioned this on his blog- wondering if anyone knows a restaraunt serving it here. a prime rib of swordfish, and it was a roughly 16-ounce cut, bone attached, that measured between three and four inches in thickness. The butcher took the collars from pup swordfish and with the bone that separates the gills from the body of the fish, he carved out the signature chop. We basted ours in olive oil and herbs de provence and topped them with tempura rings of lemon confit. Best, Ed
  11. Tapas- Amazing! I went for the 3-6 Happy hour special, half priced tapas, $3 sangria or 12 for a pitcher. The Sangria was good, and tasted like they used better than boxed wine, which is more than I can say for some places but the Tapas were standout. I ordered 2 tapas, the chorizo and the spanish tortilla. The chorizo was rich, well grilled and very tasty. Plus it came with a side of- light mushrooms or cabbage- couldn't tell what but it complemented the sausage well. The Tortilla was delicious, it tasted freshly made- was moist, and flavorful. It was came with a great garlic alioli on the side. The portions were huge for tapas. I ordered two figuring I would order more later, but I couldn't finnish what I ordered. Great value- my tab came to under $12 for one of the better dinners I've had recently. The bar itself is small but very social and relaxed. I got there right at 6 and was worried they would not be doing the happy hour special anymore, but they let me, and people who came in after me have the hh prices. Great atmosphere with people talking to each other and being friendly- the woman next to me was kind enough to share one of the mini open faced sandwiches they have- hard boiled egg with smoked salmon- and it was a wonderful bit of brunch at dinner.
  12. Sorry what is FF? What deals do they have for happy hour? I'm a big fan of Recession's. 2.50 appetizers- though most of the foodies here wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole, the mozerella sticks are good. Also 2.50 "King Kong" miller lights. I don't know how big a king kong is, but it is big, I would guess 32 oz. ed
