  1. A new location just opened up in Kingstowne. It's in the Landsdowne shopping center (which is conveniently the same shopping center where the library I manage is located). Several staff tried it last week and raved about it so today, when someone was making a run upstairs to get tacos, I placed my order. One taco pastor and one pollo. With extra hot sauce. It was reported back to me that the staff were super friendly and service was smoothing out. Last week, when the first opened, it was a bit touch and go according to another co-worker as the place was swamped with people from day one. The pastor was tasty, especially with added hot sauce. The pork was tender, flavorful with just the right about of sauce. It was topped with fresh diced onion and sliced radish. The chicken was a good solid shredded chicken taco. Again, very tender with a touch of lime, lettuce and sliced radish. The tacos themselves were nice thick, sturdy corn masa tacos. They soaked up a lot of sauce from the filling and held together until the last bite of the pastor. A co-worker gave me a bite of the chicken tamale which was good but the tamale was too thick for my liking. It was also rolled instead of one solid piece. Maybe another version of tamale I'm not familar with? There are more items on the menu to explore which will be something I look forward to trying in the coming year.
  2. "You know, we really need to try that place someday." That's what one of us inevitable says as we drive by on our way to another Korean dining establishment in the area. Tonight I got off work a little early and we took advantage of it by finally trying To Sok Jip. It's a tiny place that was bustling from the time we got there to the time we left. The food was very good and well worth more trips to further explore the menu. We started out with the spicy seafood pancake. This thing was huge! I've seen tires that were smaller. It was chock full of squid, shrimp and veggies and absolutely delicious. Two bowls of soup that I believe was seaweed in a fish broth arrived next. These must come with the pancake since we didn't order them and other tables with the pancake got them too. I was hesitant about trying it as most other soups like this I've not like. But this one was quite pleasant. Shortly before the pancake arrive, we got a nice selection of banchan Next up were the fried yellow croaker with soup in a hot clay pot (didn't get a picture of the soup that came along with this). The croaker had a light batter on it and the fish was moist and flaky. It was nice when eaten with a spoon of the spicy soup. We manage to pick both fish fairly clean. Last to arrive at the table was the spicy pork barbeque. This was very tasty but didn't have the level of heat we were expecting. The tab was less than $50. A feast with leftovers at a bargain price.
  3. Jim and I were at the Lowe's on Rt 1 tonight to purchase a new porcelain throne and decided get some dinner somewhere nearby. Peking Duck came to mind since it was close by and we've been curious about it. The parking lot was practically empty which gave us pause since it was a Friday night and many other place along Rt 1 had full lots. A large party and a table of three occupied the dining room. Other posters were right about the dated decor. It's a throwback to the 70's. But the proof would be in the duck. So we looked over the menu and decided on half a duck (just enough to give it a try), along with an appetizer, a main dish and some veg. After we ordered, we saw a couple of ducks wheeled out to the large party. They was quickly carved up and served. Old School. Things were looking up. The appetizer that caught our eye was the Cheetons. Think crab rangoon if you replace the crab with chicken and shrimp. They were surprisingly good. Then the duck arrived. I barely had time to take a picture of it being carved before it was done. The verdict was.....tasty. I think we both regretted not getting a whole one. Next time we will not make that mistake. Most of the skin was free of fat and the pieces that had any were easy to clean up. The duck meat itself was moist and just the slightest bit greasy but not enough to be concerned about. The other main dish we got was the Ghenghis Kahn Beef. An Americanized Chinese dish of beef, snow peas, water chestnuts, carrots, peppers and baby corn served on a scalding hot platter that sizzled when it arrived at the table. It too was tasty and plentiful. Most of it is sitting on the fridge and will be lunch or dinner tomorrow. For the veg, we narrowed the options down to either the string beans or eggplant Szechuan style. The green beans won out simply because I thought they would hold up better as leftovers for tomorrow. While very good, they were also an Americanized version of a Szechuan dish. Heavy on the garlic and suspiciously missing any heat. We'll see how well they reheat tomorrow and if any spiciness appears. In some ways the place reminded us of the old Honolulu restaurant on Telegraph Rd. Good, solid Americanized Chinese food, very friendly and attentive staff. We'll have to go back to explore more of the menu and perhaps place an order for a whole duck for Christmas. Fa ra ra ra ra....ra ra, ra ra.
  4. Just saw this on the news. There were just a few details but it was reported that there was a duct (not duck) fire at Bangkok 54 overnight.
  5. Count me in. Although with work being crazy lately, my participation may be limited.
  6. I think this thread may be getting off topic. Let's get back on track. Grounded Coffee is a great locally owned coffee and bake shop. I've stopped there many times on my way to work to pick up a sandwich for lunch. Lots of moms and kids visit during the day so be forewarned if you want to have enjoy a cuppa, it can get noisy. That's my only negative comment about the place. The food and coffee are worth the stop if you are in the area and supporting our local small businesses is an added bonus.
  7. Since I work and live in the area, I might be interested. If it's on a Tuesday that works with my schedule, I'm in.
  8. We'll be in Nashville the end of August. Any recommendations for good places to eat.
  9. Regional Vet Referral Center 6651 Backlick Rd Springfield, VA 22150 703-451-8900 Fax: 703-451-3343 http://www.vetreferralcenter.com/ Jim and I took our dog, Sophie, to the Vet Referral Center in Springfield, VA about 5 years ago when we found a cancerous tumor on her front leg. The first surgeon said our options were to remove the leg or try radiation and surgery to remove the tumor. Not wanting to nickname Sophie to something like Triopd Hop-along, we opted for radiation followed by removal of the tumor. This was followed by a year of low dose chemo pills. The doctors and staff at VCA were absolutely amazing. Over the course of the 18 months of regular visits, Sophie was given such great care, which included lots of hugs and smooches. She still bears the bald spot on her leg from the radiation which we have nicknamed the million dollar drumstick. Sophie is still going strong all thanks to the dedicated doctors and staff at VCA. 10. Hybla Valley Vet Hospital 7627 Richmond Highway Alexandria, Virginia 22306 (703) 765-9292 For many of us, our pets are part of our family, in fact we may like them better than some members of our family . So choosing a good vet is very important. Ten years ago when we adopted our dog Sophie from the DC Animal Shelter on NY Ave, we did our research and discovered Hybla Valley Veterinary Hospital. Not only are the doctors dedicated and caring professionals, they are affordable. The hospital was originally opened by Dr. E. J. Schrenzel in 1948. It is now run by his daughter Dr. Deborah Schrenzel. The two vets that see patients are Dr. Souri and Dr. Hong. Over the years, we have taken Sophie there more times than we can count. Anything from a nail trim to teeth cleaning to minor surgery and in-house lab work is all done with the utmost care and respect for the pets. The staff know many of their four-legged clients by name and you can tell they truly love the work they do. In addition to the veterinary services, they offer kenneling and you can get most of your pets medications filled. They also stock most of the Hills pet food varieties, both canned and dry. And, it's all the most affordable around. We've been very pleased with the care they have given us and Sophie over the years and have recommended them to friends and neighbors and now to you all on this board. Barbara Rice
  11. Jim and I had dinner at Dino last night, We each had the Venetian Tasting Menu in celebration of Dino's 8th Anniversary. You need to get over there and have this menu. At $44 and for $19 the wine pairing, it's a bargain. The food, as always, was delicious and plentiful. . Appetizers: L to R Sarde Marinati (house cured sardines in olive oil), Crudo (shrimp & scallop ceviche), and Radicchio & Gorgonzola Crostini. Pasta Course: Top left - Pasta in Salsa (a pungent sauce of onions, parsley & anchovies), top right - Risotto Coi Fiori di Zucca e Prosecco (local squash blossoms w/a splash of sparkling wine). Bottom - Risotto ai Nero di Seppi (Squid Ink & Fresh tomato sauce) Main Course: Monkfish w/Saffron Sauce & Grilled Radicchio Frito Misto di Mare {shrimp, scallops, fresh fish, zucchini, green onions, spiced yogurt dipping sauce} Dessert: In foreground: Pesca al Forno (local peaches, baked with a touch of Trickling Springs butter then topped with amaretti crumble and black peppercorn gelato) and in the background: Plum crumble with cinnamon gelato
  12. I'm pretty partial to El Pollo Ranchero in the 6300 block of Rte 1. It's cooked over charcoal as well. Fried yucca is also tasty there. On Mondays through Thursdays, they have happy hour specials on some of the food. Well worth a stop. In 2009 and the first part of 2010, the library I managed was being renovated and we were temporarily located next door to El Pollo Ranchero. The smell of the charcoal and roasting chicken was enough to make you drool.....that is unless the wind was blowing the other way. Krispy Kreme was on the other side of the library and the smell of hot freshly fried donughts would waft by. I think the staff and I each gained at least 10 pounds while we were located there.
  13. The outrage over this is a bit obsurd. It's not like this is the only restaurant in Del Ray or the only sushi place in the area. Your kids want sushi? Go somewhere else or get take out. You want to have dinner out in Del Ray with your kids, pick any of the other 20 plus places.
  14. Went out for a nice bowl of soup at Gamasot last night and noticed Desii Wok was suspiciously dark. Their website is no longer as well. Methinks it has closed.
  15. We will be in San Juan in November for a couple of days pre/post cruise. I'm particularly interested in finding a place to get some good asopao and other local foods like the legendary roast pig and mofongo.
  16. Daytona Beach In the same neighborhood as Down the Hatch is Lighthouse Landing. It's right across the street from the Ponce Lighthouse. http://www.discoverdaytona.com/beachside/beachside/restaurants/lighthouse-landing/index.htm If you want to venture across the inlet to New Smyrna Beach, I'd recommend, Dolphin View, or Off the Hook. Dolphin view is mostly outdoor seating with water views. Off the Hook is in the Publix Shopping center (beachside).
  17. Sundae: I'm so glad you enjoyed Penang and that my advice was helpful. It is indeed the place to go for good food. When asked what sites we saw while in Penang, we mumbled something about seeing a few governement buildings as we drove by them and venturing into the fort but that was about it. Otherwise, we were either eating, seeking out more eats or back at the hotel cooling off with a drink at the bar. Too bad you didn't get to try the coconut tarts. I found a recipe that looks like it may be as close to these as you can get outside Penang. If they turn out to be like the originals, I'll let you know and see if I can get some to you.
  18. Sorry for the delay in getting these pictures posted. If I've mislabeled any, please let me know
  19. Thanks for a wonderfully informative night! I'll post pictures soon.
