  1. I ate lunch there today for the first time and it was wonderful. Sebastian was a warm and accomodating host, and chose well for me. I had one of the lamb dishes with the lima bean rice. Despite thinking I'd have leftovers of the lamb, I finished it all. The bread was warm and soon gone. Loved the jalapeno stuff to put on the bread, and the lamb, and wherever. Can't wait to go back and try more.
  2. My lovely former nanny, who is from Ghana, wants to take me out to eat to thank me and I said I want Ghanaian food. She said Ghana Cafe is not good and a friend told her that the only good place is in Woodbridge. Anyone know of another good Ghanaian restaurant that isn't in Woodbridge?
  3. I was there last night too, on the patio with my son - he had the bimbi, and I had Vincent's recommendation, the special - it had no sauce, eggplant (kind of a puree) and bresaolo, which my son kept trying to take (hard to say no to him but you bet I did). Amazing, as always - this place never, ever disappoints me. I do like the mushroom pizza very much - it has the white sauce and I don't find it heavy at all.
  4. In Arlington, you could try Borromeo Housing - they help out needy single moms - http://borromeohousing.org/.
  5. I am very late in posting about my meal at Unum in December - which is too bad, because I can't really remember what we had, but I do remember really liking the meal. We split some dishes, I think I had fish, and a really good martini. The setting is quiet and comfortable, the food was really good and I'd certainly go back if I had the chance to do so (toddler, tired, etc.)
  6. I was in Sonoma a few years back and went to Simi for a tasting. I had a rose there that I've never found in the greater DC area that was wonderful. And their port wasn't half bad either but the schmucko ex-boyfriend got that bottle in the split.
  7. Silly me - went to their website after I posted this, and it looks like every Giant in the DMV has them.
  8. Maybe Castro Bakery in 7 Corners - they do all sorts of decorations. Good luck!
  9. Just read Florence Fabricant's description in today's NY Times and I'd like to try some - anyone seen any in Dc area stores?
  10. I'm eating my very first one as I type, from a food truck parked with a bunch of others, on Mass Ave near Union Station. Lots of food for $8, and pretty tasty. I think the truck is called Krazy Koshary and I got the basic with beef.
  11. Per my other post about few choices on Valentine's Day for non-valentine's partakers, I ate at Agora last night - even though they were fully booked per Open Table, we were able to get a table for three. One of our party is 1/2 Turkish so she provided her take on all the items - she thought the food was pretty authentic. The zucchini patties were excellent, as was the mini meat raviolis (more like teeny dumplings) with yogurt sauce that I had. I tasted the lambchops (nice grilled flavor) and polished off my rice pudding and balkava (which the Turkish guest found to be dry). I had a glass of a Portuguese red, a Douro, that was perfect with my food and only $8 a glass. One item of note: the hostess was a bit of a airhead (my Dutch friend's choice of words - I said dingbat but that didn't translate to Dutch) and forgot about us twice. Not sure I'll be back anytime soon as I'm rarely in that neighborhood, but I enjoyed the meal and the ambiance.
  12. Well, we ended up at Agora on 17th Street, per my friend's boss's choice (she's 1/2 Turkish). Yes, we were the only non couple in there but the food was quite good (will post about it later) and we enjoyed ourselves, especially watching the couples taking pictures. Yeesh. And we all wondered why everyone was making such a big deal - friend and her boss are Dutch and said it's a total nonevent in the Netherlands and Belgium. Nancy
  13. I'm in a similar boat - friend is here from overseas and we want to have dinner, with her boss. Checking OpenTable but nothing enticing comes up . . . Sigh.
  14. Nothing on this place for a while but had lunch here today, thanks to Groupon. Service was a bit odd and we ordered from menu (Groupon restrictions) but I definitely liked the food. Samosas, dosas and naan - and in typing that just realized how much starch I ate. But it all tasted good and the waitress said everything, even all the sauces, are made from scratch. I particularly liked the naan - straight from the oven & just baked. Almost forgot that we had chai tea too - will never order at Starbucks again after this stuff - what a difference. Nancy
  15. This is so helpful to me - I work in Gaithersburg, in the Rio Center and, for the most part, when I do go out to lunch, I really don't like eating anywhere nearby. There is the taco bar at the gas station on the corner of Fields Road and 370, but some variety is nice. One place I do love to go, when I have a chance to go out, is Burma Road. I only order from the Burmese menu and I've never been disappointed. Thanks for posting.
  16. Holy cow - totally different, much more shiny. And probably smells better. But I loved the old one . . .
  17. Just got back from drinks out with a new friend, and toasting to my sweet friend who took his own life on Monday. So sad. But Eventide makes a mean martini that helped dull the ache.
  18. Cheez - sorry for delay in posting, see my other post and you'll see why . . . We did end up at Screwtop. While there was a wait, the staff is so exceedingly nice, we didn't mind. When I told the hostess that one of the party needed to eat asap (no lunch and cranky), she brought her some truffle popcorn and a couple of slices of cheese without us asking. The wines were good (don't remember), the crowd civilized, the food fresh and tasty, and we had a great time catching up. I did find out, in hindsight, that we could have made a reservation because we had a larger party. Lesson learned . . . Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
  19. Memorial service is at Money & King Funeral Home on Maple Avenue in Vienna on Saturday, late morning. Horribly tragic circumstances and the family will be gathering separately. But the friends, including me, will certainly need a stiff drink and maybe a bite to eat afterwards. I'm totally unfamiliar with that area and would appreciate any recommendations you can make. Thanks, Nancy
  20. Probably a ridiculous question but have the (rare) opportunity to meet friends for sort-of happy hour, like 6:30 - 7 pm this Friday. I suggested Screwtop or Odd Bar/Eventide but us oldsters don't want to be anywhere too loud or crowded. I like both these places but how crowded (and young) do they get on a Friday night? If not one of these places, I'm open to suggestions. Good beers a plus. Thanks, Nancy
  21. I'm going this coming Thursday - taking a friend out for dinner as a thank you. Will post afterwards - and surprised that no one else has posted yet too.
  22. Had lunch here yesterday because my physical therapist is in the building, my appointment there was late s I was starving afterwards, free parking and wireless. With no expectations, the food was great. I had the vegetarian sampler - lentils, hummus, lovely smoky baba ghanoush, some bean puree, cucumber salad, a stuffed grape leaf and two falafel patties, plus a warm pita. Oh, and some chickpeas, and probably something else but I can't remember. They kindly substituted one of the salad items, beets, because I hate them. Total was $10 and change, and I didn't need dinner.
  23. To that end, I have used the wash and fold next to Mr. Wash on Glebe Road - did all my sheets and towels there because I hate doing them (folding, specifically). It was 99 cents a pound and worth every penny to me at the time.
