  1. In late 2019, where will we find the best bowl of pho? Generally, I prefer Northern Virginia and Pho Thang Long or Pho Saigon. I also enjoy Pho Duong. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim
  2. You were spot on with the Daikaya Izakaya (upstairs) recommendation. It has become a favorite of mine. I write fondly of the ramen of the day on a day many months past: Clam Chowder Ramen. It was outrageously good. Obviously memorable.
  3. Friday night 7:30 pm, second night open, dinner with my family (wife and 12yo son). Neal proved a wonderful host, the experience was friendly and efficient. We shared a family meal of a chicken, salad, macncheese, bread w/bacon butter, crispy potatoes. Opened with deviled eggs, philly-cheese-style. All told about $85 w/20% tip. A good value for three. It's true: A chicken is an excellent first test for a chef, and this one was an A+.. The mac was the only disappointment, last-minute surprise substitute for sold-out corn pudding. Bread was a wow (what served w/bacon butter isn't?), the potatoes terrific. The salad (vg vinaigerette) was a pleasant surprise, the eggs an interesting appetizer. Hoping Thurs thru Mon dinners expands to include brunch and perhaps lunch and breakfast. It's a nice place run by good people and that always sells well around here. Combine that with Marshall's new food angle and there should be crowds clamoring for a Sunday brunch!
  4. How did this thread miss the arrival in Marshall of what may be the finest butcher I've encountered, The Whole Ox: thewholeox.com Also, you can dine in The Whole Ox, but carrying out produce and great prepared food are on the list of options.
  5. Recently made a number of consecutive holiday-time visits to Pho Thang Long in Fairfax and I must write that it's better than ever, and consistently so. The broth is the best, by far, of anything in this area. I stick with the Pho Tai. I am definitely a Pho regular at kitchens around the world, preferring it only slightly to Bibimbap or Ramen, all delicious. Is there ay decent ramen in the DC area -- only NYC has satisfied me in this department. Jim
  6. I've been to Pho Duong in Centreville at least a dozen times over the past few months. It is one of the best bowls of Pho in the DC area. The broth is especially good. Service is so so, but hey it's a Pho kitchen and it's all about the soup and big tables and community. The non-soup dishes are good, too, but my focus is the soup and this is some of the very best. At first the place seemed relatively empty, but the crowds are growing. Whether it will reach critical mass in time to avoid the fate of most Centreville restaurants is debatable, but enjoy it while you can. Jim
  7. Recently I had a fantastic meal at Sushi Sono, and have one question about the amazing "white tuna." Is it Escolar or is it Albacore? I feel certain Chef King knows the difference if anyone does, and so I wonder -- which is it? On-line guides say these two fish are often confused, and with the gastro consequences of Escolar it seems important to ask. The taste is amazing, but the after effects can be brutal if it is Escolar. How is a diner to know the difference?
  8. The Plains has more than its share of nice places to eat with well-prepared, good fresh food. The Rail Stop and Girasole are notables, of course, but Forlano's Market is a relatively new entrant that is doing well. And Jeremiah's is the new incarnation of Frogs and Friends. Worth trying. Yes, the Hunter's Head advice is good, too, as is Blackthorne Inn just a bit further down the road. It's Irish dining at its best, with nice rooms for visitors.
  9. I recently had the pleasure to visit Sushi Sono and I must say: Wow, what a meal. It was lunch, but it was extraordinary. Of all the dishes that I found impressive, the white tuna was the most memorable flavor. The crispy spanish mackarel was amazing, too. Highly recommended. Well done, King Chef! And I must add that I am compelled by the story of his daughter written above. Touching, honest and yet more understanding of this very talented chef.
  10. I love a good bowl of Pho and have fallen for the Pho at Pho Thanh Long in Merrifield, VA, just off 66 and 29 on Nutley in the Pan Am Shopping Center (MicroCenter, Giant, etc.). The people who run the place are nice, but the Pho is the star. Terrific appetizers, sure, but the Pho Tai is first rate. It's the equal of Pho Gourmet in Manassas, maybe a bit better. Try it. You'll like it ... Jim
