  1. My niece is trying to put together an inexpensive wedding. She would be happy with Costco finger food but needs a licensed caterer. Please let me know if you are interested or have any suggestions. Toby
  2. The kale rabe was delicious sauteed in garlic oil. It had a mild kale flavor and an unexpected sweetness. I woke up today craving it and just finished the little bit that was leftover.
  3. We ate there Saturday night. According to the menu Roberto was responsible for designing the menu. The food seemed similar to Bebo. Veal carpaccio was the same preparation to we had at Bebo - a very nice dish of thin sliced veal with arugula and parmesean. Grilled baby octopus with marinated eggplant was delicious, unfortunately there was only one octopus cut in half for , I think, $14. Our entrees were a lasgnette with sausage, leeks and marscapone and paparadelle with a duck ragu. The homemade pasta had a nice texture with the exception of a few paparadelle noodles that were stuck to together and therefore undercooked. The sausage sauce was mild and creamy. The duck ragu was good but a bit bland. The foccacia had thin slices of nicely seasoned tomato but was a bit gummy in spots. The service was overly attentive to the point of being obtrusive, we must have been asked how everything was at least a dozen times. This is an amazing restaurant for Rockville, but if I did not live nearby I do not think it would be worth a trip to the burbs. or the price I would rather go somewhere that there is a chance that the person that designed the menu is executing it.
  4. I really do not want to post this. The service at Burma Road was so nice that I do not want to post anything negative. I also hesitated because they have only been open two days. If I hadn't had the nanje thoke at Mandalay or the salads at Myanmar I would not have had such high hopes for a local restaurant. The menu is mostly chinese with and with the exception of the appetizers there were few Burmese dishes. We started with four appetizers. The tea leaf salad was the best dish of the evening - although it was not spicy as was indicated on the menu. The papaya salad tasted like raw cabbage. A tofu and chickpea paste appetizer was tasteless fried squares served with a sweet melted red lollipop dipping sauce. The hot and sour soup - our only Chinese dish - was neither hot nor sour. We then had two entrees and two side dishes. The pork with pickled vegetable(?) was quite good - slow cooked fatty pork in a thick salty gravy. Nanje thoke with chicken had gluey noodles and a fairly tasteless sauce. The young tamarind turned out to be a dish whose taste and texture reminded me too much of pure shrimp paste. The eggplant dish was flavorful but a bit too oily and shrimp pasty for me. This meal left me feeling sad. Most of the staff stopped by to offer help with ordering and to ask us how everything was. Their earnestness and concern was palpable. I could not bring myself to tell them how I felt about the food. I am hoping that others will try Burma Road and have a better experience. Toby
  5. I haven't been yet but Todd Kliman had good things to say about Pana Thai in Derwood: http://www.washingtonian.com/chats/restaurants/9362.html Toby
  6. The dish that calls to me from across the river is the szechwan chili fish. It is similar to Peter Chang's bamboo basket preparation, fried mild white fish (tilapia?) is finished with scallions and what Fuchsia Dunlop calls a small rice bowl of dried chilies. The fish absorbs the flavor of the chili as well as the heat. I like to eat it with a chili in each bite, the combination of sweet and salty crispy fish, hot peppers and scallions is truly addictive. The ma po tofu is very good. Other dishes I have tried have not been as memorable.
  7. I'll second the patel bros. recommendation. It is right next to Magruders.
  8. Has anyone else gone to Redwood for restaurant week? I have reservations for tonight and have called repeatedly to get information about the menu - we are taking picky teenagers with us and I want to make sure that they will not mope. Yesterday I was told that there would be three options but the person that answered the phone had no way of knowing what was on the menu. I did not expect specifics but the total lack of information was surprising. Today I was told there would be a fish option, a meat option, a hamburger option etc. The person I talked to could give me no more information. The previous post makes the food sound so much more interesting than the restaurant does. So, if anyone else has gone please post about your experience. Thanks, Toby
  9. I picked some up at the River Road Whole Foods.
  10. Had lunch at Hong Kong Palace today and I am already planning to go back. The dry beef appetizer was amazing. Served cold in a dark, spicy sauce topped with sesame seeds the delightfully chewy meat had a haunting taste of cinnamon (5 spice?) that was not overpowered by the hot spices. Ma po tofu was exemplary, cumin lamb was the best rendition I have ever had. The ish with vegetable in spicy broth was quite good. The spicy wontons good but not up to Peter Cheng's or some wonderful ones we had in London. To top it off the service was absolutely delightful, the waitress spoke English and was very accommodating. We ordered our food prepared with the traditional spiciness and the result was perfect, hot but not overwhelming.
  11. Just got back from dinner at Bobby's. The crab cake, the chowder, and the fries were excellent - rivaling home made. The slaw was not to my taste, too sweet and with a dominant onion flavor. Adding vinegar and salt helped. This will definitely be on our regular rotation.
  12. I tend to go to the holiday lunch about twice a year. I am less critical because it is lunch, and it is a buffet, but this was truly bad.
  13. I had a thoroughly disapointing lunch at Bombay Bistro in Rockville yesterday. From the special holiday buffet the bluefish was chewy, dry and had little spice, the goat curry had a nice sauce but the goat was overcooked, the vegetable dishes were bland. The only dish that I tried that interested me was a spicy sambar. My daughter ordered baigan bartha which has been her favorite there for many years. The recipe had obviously been changed and instead of the smoky, thick, spice laden dish that she expected she got a bland bowl of soupy, boiled eggplant and onion. Although this has been on our rotation for almost 10 years I do not think we will return.
  14. There is sign on a storefront on Rockville Pike in the same strip mall as Sam Woo that says that Penzey's Spices will be opening soon.
  15. My favorite is nangee thoke - curried chicken strips served atop thick noodles that taste like they have been soaked in the coconut milk curry. We usually order several salads, multiple orders of the noodles (because they are too good to share) and a mustard green dish.
