  1. I used the WaPo's "Chicken and Red Peppers in a creamy sauce" as a basic recipe for an easy chicken paprikash last night.   Boneless, skinless chicken thighs, red peppers, a cubanelle pepper, onions, garlic, paprika and cayenne, S&P, served over egg noodles with sour cream. I omitted the yogurt suggested for the sauce in the recipe as I didn't have any, but now that I think of it I should have used creme fraiche. I'll do that with the leftovers.

  2. I found a few recipes for chicken with sun-dried tomato and mushroom cream sauce, so I made that last night. As with most recipes, I always make the full compliment of sauce, even if I'm just cooking one chicken breast for myself. On the side was Carolina rice and green beans sautéed with sliced almonds and shallots.

  3. This past Saturday night I made an attempt at replicating The Halal Guys chicken and rice, white sauce, and salad plate. I based it on the recipe in Serious Eats, but used the white sauce recipe "reverse-engineered" from a packet ingredient list by a guy on Thrillist. I have a "molecular mixology" kit so I was able to put a pinch of Xanthan Gum in the sauce to thicken it a bit as recommended.

I was really happy with the results and learned some things to adjust for next time I make it. I used basmati rice to make the yellow turmeric rice.

  4. This part of the interview makes me dislike Taffer even more:

Then I remember when he complained to Fox News that Covid relief had made his employees unruly. “A hungry dog is an obedient dog,” he told Laura Ingraham, implying that the government should “cause people to be hungry to work.” Perhaps this has colored my opinion of his food.

Really? Starving people are compliant is his big lesson?

I just saw a commercial for Talenti on ABC World News Tonight, ie, on national network TV.

I used to like them, but the last time I had a chocolate flavor, I thought it tasted off, so I looked at the ingredients and was surprised to see coconut oil. I don't remember seeing that on earlier containers. Haven't bought any since.

I made this too!  I did add shredded chicken thighs and cucumber strips - still delicious.

I made it with ground pork and fresh spinach, it was good.

A perfect Easter dinner for one: Strip steak medium rare, mixed salad, and steamed tiny potatoes.

Very similar to my solo dinner: Reverse seared boneless ribeye, Anne Burrell's mashed potato recipe, and roasted asparagus with Hollandaise.

  7. Yesterday I realized that Katz' Deli in Woodbridge CT is only 6 miles from me, and about a block away from my cats' vet. I had a lovely first cut pastrami on marble rye with Swiss, toasted, and the dill pickles were just the right thing to go with it. I'll be back for cheesecake, bagels, etc..

Best to avoid leaving by their main entrance if you want to go left though, better to go around the back of the building and use an exit further away from the red light just before Rt. 15.

  8. Much has happened since my last entry. Crimson developed struvite stones in his bladder and there was inappropriate everything, often on treasured objects. He had also ate something that stuffed his colon up. This was in April. Off to the hospital, and he had to get opened up and the stones scooped out of his little bladder. I am so glad I have insurance on my 2 oranges.

He had the runs recently, and the vets are too backed up for personal visits, so they were kind enough to tell me he has an inflammation from his issues (he has to eat special food now to increase the acidity of his urine). So they gave me Metronidazole caps. After a couple of days, he has learned to detect it and I can put it in his mouth and he'll leave the room and drop it on the floor while laughing at me. Pill pockets? He'll eat around the pill and leave it on the floor and say "Thanks for the snack!". I will emply the Pill Popper now, as he can also pick the pill out of his wet food, and he can also tell if I've slit open the capsule and mixed the powder in. "Hey, there's something in here! I'm not eating this!" They have amazing senses.

    Aengus is doing well.

  9. When I was searching for a house to buy in CT, my base was at a hotel in Avon. I discovered one of the best pizzas I ever had at a small place called E&D Pizza at 200 W. Main St. in Avon. There's a liquor store next door so you can go back to your room with all you need for the evening. Their salads are pretty good too.

Closer to me in Hamden, I like Olde World Apizza right next to Hamden in North Haven. Very much a New Haven style place.
