  1. For those of you who didn't make the smoked pig party, it was a lot of fun-great pork, great crowd, and all free.
  2. Obviously poetic license. I am not advocating violence. Although as previously mentioned, a kitchen can be a dangerous place, where anyone can accidentally slip and fall.
  3. I think if you read the entire post, you may come away with a different conclusion. The blog writer seems to be saying that he knew what he was doing was wrong (especially walking into the kitchen). And of course his actions were not viewed as justified by the chef, who also felt the writer was being dismissive and patronizing towards him. In any event, barging into a busy professional kitchen is never a good idea; but it does show that this writer thinks he can just act out however he wants (they teach that sort of entitlement at the Times?). Since when is a chef yelling at an employee an opportunity to insert yourself into his kitchen? The writer is lucky to be alive.
  4. Johnny Rotten and PIL had a blast at Perry's last night...
  5. Sorry but you are way out of line here. I know this whole circle of people and believe me, everyone would like the tragic murder of this wonderful person to be solved. That is the point of this article, which, in your knee-jerk haste to condemn the press, you have totally missed. And your posts here are disgusting and way more salacious and cynical than the article. I'm not sure what your motives are, and I don't care; but by the same token, you certainly don't have the power to discern the author's motives either.
  6. The owner's box at Fedex Field is where the owner sits-Dan Snyder is there at every Redskins game. 'Owner's Box' is not a generic term. That being said, in sports like baseball, where you have a lot of home games, the owner may not be in his or her box at every game. However, the owner is not the star and if you are sitting in his box you didn't pay to get in anyway. But Voltaggio is, and you do. A lot.
  7. Funny-I also sort of remembered him from Cafe Atlantico first, but the quote above is from Jose's bio. And if my memory serves me well, he was not the first chef at the original Cafe Atlantico.
  8. mussels-$3.99/bag(!) at Harris Teeter-I lost count at 50-some small some medium--steamed; sauteed shallots, then steaming liquid into a pan, add coconut milk (lite), curry powder, five-spice powder, kosher salt; pour over mussels. Slurp
  9. according to Fisher: (my emphasis) You agree?
  10. From Tom Sietsema-"Furstenberg. (Full disclosure: The baker and I are longtime friends.) " So I guess the Fisher rule applies:
  11. I have. I also know chefs and restaurant owners I can not stand to be in the same room with, who have received positive notices from me. And that hurts more than dissing friends, believe me. And in sports or politics, or the arts, if you spend any time in the field, you pretty much know everyone. So the idea that Fisher proffers is false, and he actually makes no argument in support of his opinion. Additionally, he makes no distinction between bloggers, CH'ers, Yelp'ers, DR.com'ers, etc., where there are obviously varying degrees of experience and knowledge.
  12. Your example shows that in one minor incident, perhaps you may have gone easy on a friend. And perhaps you feel that you were, and would be, unable to be objective about the work of someone you know. I wouldn't exactly call that "fraught with peril".
  13. .Mr. Fisher is impugning the motives of an entire class of people whose 'motivation' he could not possibly know, yet he states said motives with certainty. I can't argue with his certainty, I do not know the man's motivation for writing this piece (loyalty, fear, a noble desire to explain the truth as he sees it, etc.), but the truthfulness of his argument can certainly be called into question. In addition, I don't necessarily think that that free appetizer I got from my friend the chef or restaurant owner, is necessarily going to taste better or compel me to write a better review of the establishment. I'm certain of that, because I've done it any number of times. It is also done by others, who know their subjects intimately, in every other artistic field, as well as in sports and politics, to name two, all the time.
  14. Right on. There is a general anti-blogger slash internet user bias in Fisher's piece. This is completely false and cynical. Bloggers, or any other critic, can obviously know their subject extremely well and still be able to write objectively about them and their 'art'. This is not just true in restaurant criticism, but all across the spectrum. Fisher may be standing up for the old-school so-called journalists, but his argument comes across as biased, and, dare I say, naive.
  15. Thanks for telling me to "take it to eGullet" but then welcoming me back home. Don, YOU are GOOD EGG!
  16. We can sell two-ounce pours in dixie cups from a cart across the street. Or is someone already doing that?
  17. I'm not challenging your wine knowledge Don, I am merely guessing the prices as they actually might be-unless you are reading them off the invoice? I also think invoking 'cheap stemware' was part of my question. Are you ok in paying more for wine in more expensive glassware? Or is the 'cheap stemware' what helps to keep prices down....and I agree it is an anthill, just a discussion. But maybe for someone who doesn't have your personal knowledge, they maybe might see it another way.
  18. Well without actual knowledge let's say that the bottle costs $15 retail and maybe $10+ wholesale. You mention 'cheap stemware' but would you rather pay another $5-6 for a Reidel glass? $12 would satisfy you at a six ounce pour? Or $8? Just curious-you say you suspect that the presented wine was a generic substitution. Is this merely a guess, or do you have any evidence? That's a serious charge, Don. Could you not see the bottle? Or are you suggesting something more nefarious?
  19. Coincidentally, Mayor Fenty's new budget proposal contains a provision for Zipcar to pay for their use of public spaces. To the tune of $275,000.
  20. My feeling is that there will be exemptions/exceptions, and that there will continue to be new restaurants/bars opening-the article doesn't mention how many permits are already in the pipeline, for example. However, there can be a problem with too many restaurants/bars in a neighborhood-rents skyrocket because then landlords only want to rent to those types of businesses. The point of the arts overlay is to encourage business diversity, and to encourage artists and galleries to come to or stay in the neighborhood.
  21. I never said people shouldn't vent. Read my posts. I agree with everything you say, sir. Go ahead and vent. Does everyone have to agree with you? Because if you can't take a little back-and-forth with the people here (or some lady WHO WANTED A THIRD BUNNY) then you might be incredibly thin-skinned and not cut out for retail. 'sall I'm sayin'. (By the way, I did notice that the OP went to the 'negative' poster on Yelp and contacted her (as I suggested on the Yelp thread), and she re-posted a positive review. Instead of lashing out at her here, perhaps contacting her first would have saved a lot of stress and heartache for the OP.) I guess I'm just slightly annoyed at entitled business owners who trash their customers (many of whom, I would guess, lurk here often, and rarely or never post-perhaps even the 'bunny lady'.). Works both ways.
