  1. Isn't that why they have that 'warning' at the beginning of the show? Last night's episode was excruciatingly bland. Tony was also looking off-somewhat bloated and red-faced. But then I haven't watched in a while.
  2. It's always the same when old-timers get sacked-everyone looks around for someone to blame. Maybe they just weren't very good anymore?
  3. My guess is that a preponderance of the participants are lawyers, too. Doesn't really sound like a big health problem, though. Not much different than a big dinner party where you get to meet new people. Instead of a nice bottle of wine or flowers, you throw in some cash. Little expensive for me, but sounds like fun with the right crowd.
  4. "biting the hand that feeds him" is not "hypocritical" at all. It is at the core of his whole shtick. The whole 'bad' tony vs. 'good' tony thing. But he is raking in the bucks and I applaud that. However, using Fat Guy, Perlow, et. al., the gout issue, etc., this is all old news that was covered in a NY Times piece some time ago; so I'm sure he saw an easy opportunity to take some potshots.
  5. I bought a set at HT (Citadel) last night and they were amazingly fresh. If you go past the seafood counter they also sell thick-sliced salt pork at the end of the meat section. Next to the fatback. Good combination.
  6. I also wondered about the timing of the bag tax, with the economy in the toilet, etc; and the reasoning behind charging for paper bags as well as plastic bags. I also agree that the reasoning behind the tax, that plastic bags end up in the Anacostia River, seems bizarre-does all my garbage end up in the river? Is that where the big blue truck takes it? But I've found that about half the time I shop with a reusable bag-so I get a five cent credit-and before the bag tax I never used a reusable bag. So not only has my behavior changed over a five-cent tax (weird), but I break even on the whole thing.
  7. Like the best dishes are usually created by the best chefs, the best drinks are usually crafted by the best bartenders. Regardless of technique.
  8. After work Saturday I walked over to The Passenger-from opening until about 6:30 there were a couple of seats at the bar. Also, while I understand the free-poured versus jigger argument, you can still get a great cocktail that has been free-poured by a pro, like Tom Brown. It is amazing to me how quickly the cocktail-bar scene has gone from cool/relaxed/retro, to fey/uptight/snobbish. It really has become tedious. The Passenger is a welcome and refreshing exception.
  9. My objective in posting was to counter the assertion that Zipcar pays DC for its parking spaces on public property. In fact, the opposite is true-DC gave up meter fees at formerly metered public spaces, and paid for improvements to the spaces, then gave them to Zipcar. Additionally, I'm not a tax accountant, but I'm not sure how one could know that Zipcar pays DC taxes.
  10. Zipcar is a for-profit corporation, so the "reasoning" of DDOT is faulty at best.
  11. I'm not going to argue the alleged merits of Zipcar, but the last time I looked they were not paying for public spaces, only private ones. Either way, you can get ticketed and towed for parking in their spaces, and the fine is similar to parking in a bus stop.
  12. ...it was Verden, not Overend, who was nicknamed Phally....
  13. Bison Steak and Cheese Sandwich was a recent special, and the cinnamon-scented bison meat and tongue chili is always a favorite; but the real news here is two-fold. First, on Friday evenings, there is a children's happy hour where neighborhood parents bring their kids and all hell breaks loose on the second floor. Hilarious. And starting tomorrow, Mondays will feature slot-car racing. So dust off your Cucaracha (pun intended).
  14. I may not be tech-savvy, but I'm guessing Tom picks the chatters he chooses to publish/respond to. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  15. I'm just saying that both statements seem childish (in particular his cringe-inducing "Cakehate"). And the statement that Brown has gotten so much attention is misleading. If you don't like him or his food, then any attention he gets will rankle.
  16. By random I mean there was absolutely no reason for him to slam Brown at this time. In fact, he does not say that Brown's food is bad in his chat response, either, which would have been something else. He instead publishes an amateurish anonymous slam of Brown's food, and then backhand compliments him to death. If you want to put your name to a critique of Brown's food, as you claim to have, that is perfectly acceptable. But to personally slam Brown, by saying that he gets too much publicity, which is what TS has done, smacks of something else. And I agree with your last sentence, there is no gender bias (or for that matter, racism) in the restaurant industry.
  17. Terrific piece-really captured the food-obsessed at their best. No disrespect to those involved-congrats in fact, but I also wish Trillin had maybe written a little more about the food
  18. And his random 'anonymous' slam of Brown's Cakelove makes sense to you? Backhanded compliments like "good back-story" and "easy on the eyes" make sense to you? As he lets the damning anonymous (and ridiculous) assertion stand unanswered? As a previous poster mentioned, the slam on what appears to be Nora P. was completely random (and of course he didn't have the guts to simply say who he was talking about) and brought gender into the equation. That makes sense to you? Hey, I'm just saying. The preachy, pedantic side of Alice Waters....
  19. "The other local who gets far more attention (nationally) that I think she merits considers herself Washington's answer to Alice Waters. Other nominees, anyone?" Wow. I always thought that Tom considered himself Washington's answer to Alice Waters. Ironic.
  20. Excellent! Perhaps someone can get another server to drop a tray of drinks?
  21. There are dozens of these all over the country. May be 'new' to DC, but I would not consider DC's food cart/truck scene as exactly cutting edge.
