  1. Earlier this year I was eating at Rasika, and asked if I could order some of their soft foods to bring to an ill friend who had loved eating there. The waiter was very kind and helpful, going over the different sides with me and discussing which were purees and which would have some solid pieces, and brought it all at the end of the meal without me needing to remind him. I appreciated his thoughtfulness so much. And the sight of the Rasika bag in her hospital room made her smile.
  2. I'm sorry that I don't have specifics (forgot to report at the time), but want to report that I had a lovely meal here a couple of months ago. Everything was delicious, except for one item (risotto) that I just didn't like -- I couldn't give a specific reason, like oversaltiness or otherwise, I just did not like it, and the waitress picked up on that and replaced it, no charge, with another dish. Which was delicious. It was far improved from the last time I ate here, a couple of years ago.
  3. How is their dim sum? Looking to bring a big group for dim sum on Monday, was thinking Hunan Number One (not the best but not bad last time I went, and very convenient), but according to Yelp they've had a change of management and gone hugely downhill, basically becoming a place to get beer very cheap). Oriental East would be very handy as well, but we could probably all go to Mark's Duck House in Falls Church, which I know is good.
  4. Thanks - unfortunately can't do wine, but will pass this on if others go. Appreciate the recommendation.
  5. Has anyone been here recently? We'll be at Solomon's Island this weekend and I was checking to see what the boards recommend. I'm hoping to hear that people still like it with the new chef.
  6. Any updates on restaurants in Solomon's Island? Going by earlier recommendations here and elsewhere on these boards, I was looking at Westlawn Inn, Dry Dock, CD Cafe (though we probably won't go there unless things have changed since ohstate's 2008 update), and maybe Stoney's at Broome Island. We're going this weekend and would very much appreciate recommendations. It's a special occasion, so Westlawn Inn would be a definite possibility if it's still excellent after the previous chef left. But otherwise, crab and fish in various forms sounds good. Thanks!!
  7. We're having dinner at Luna Grill on Sunday, pre-theater (Theatre J). We would've liked to have tried Hank's Oyster Bar, but since they don't take reservations and our time is tight, it won't work. Those who've eaten at Luna, do you have any recommendations? I appreciate it very much. Thanks!
  8. My cousin is having a party that's a combination first birthday and going-away party, so she expects to have a lot more people (grownups) than at your typical first birthday party. They would like to have carrot cake as the birthday cake, don't have time to make it because they're going away, and are wondering where's a good place to buy one (that doesn't cost the earth). We've heard from people who've tried Costco and Heidelberg that theirs are not that great. Anywhere else? We thought of Whole Foods, maybe Best Buns if they do cakes (their cupcakes are amazing), and Harris Teeter. Pastries By Randolph will likely be too expensive, since they need to serve a moderately large gathering. Any ideas welcomed gratefully!
  9. Five of us had a truly marvelous lunch at Siroc last week. I don't remember everything we had, but I'll tell you what I remember. The bread in the bread basket was very good quality - I think it was foccaccia and a nice chewy crusty bread. I had Endive and Cress Salad with Orange Sections, Crispy Bacon and Candied Pecans dressed with a Vanilla Vinaigrette. It was one of the best salads I've ever had. The endive was cut up into slivers and wasn't bitter (I'm not a fan of endive in its usual whole-leaf form, but I like everything else in the salad so I ordered it, and was very happily surprised by the endive). The dressing was a little sweet but not too sweet, and melded perfectly with the ingredients. The bacon was in tiny bits that surprised me here and there, and was indeed crispy and full of flavor. I had a half salad because it was entree-size and I wanted a main dish - I love a place that will serve you half plates of pasta and half salads. There was a soft shell crab special - I'm a nut for soft shells, as long as they're not deep-friend so that you hardly taste the crab. This was one largish crab, sauteed, in a creamy sauce which I thought sounded odd but was a beautiful complement to the crab. I can't remember exactly what was else was in the dish - I'm thinking fennel, and one or two other things. The crab was cooked perfectly. Loved this. Finished with chocolate hazelnut mousse, enrobed in chocolate, with raspberry sauce and creme anglais and fresh raspberries. Just perfect. There was also french press coffee - I'm no coffee expert but I know some people prefer french press. One of my friends had the gnocchi and gave me one - it was so tender! I didn't know gnocchi could be that tender. Scrumptious. She had the pan seared spicy shrimp as an appetizer and found it too spicy for her - I had one and enjoyed it, though I didn't really taste any of the pomegranate that it said was in the caponata. Another friend had the squid ink cappellini, and he was very happy with it. We all agreed that we would absolutely go back to Siroc. And I would recommend it without hesitation.
  10. I'm used to Hong Kong style dim sum, but after reading all the raves here, I have to try A&J. Does A&J have something like a turnip cake? Also, is it possible to do a party at A&J, perhaps in an off hour like from 3 to 5? Could we, perhaps, have screens separating us from the rest of the room? A friend had a party at Peking Gourmet where they did that, and it worked just as well as having a private room would have. We're planning a party for about 40 people, and would like to have it in Annandale so those who want can go to karaoke after (Cafe U&I looked good for karaoke). Thanks!
  11. Cosi, not Potbelly. There's a Cosi on one side of the street and Au Bon Pain on the other. My top recommendations would be Teaism, Rasika, Cafe Atlantico, Full Kee, Burma, Oyamel, Jaleo, South Austin Grill or Olsson's (which has a nice soup and salad combo and tasty sandwiches).
  12. I'm taking a friend for lunch at Restaurant Eve next Monday (we were supposed to be at the Majestic on Thursday, but had to reschedule, and the Majestic isn't open on Mondays). We're going to eat in the bistro. I've eaten there once before, for dinner, and loved it. Any recommendations? I don't know if the nettle soup is still there or if it's too late in the season for soft-shells. Neither of us are organ meat eaters, and she needs to eat food fully cooked for immunity reasons. She loves oysters, and I guess we'll ask whether they're considered fully cooked or not (the online lunch menu doesn't star it as "undercooked," but the dinner menu does). Oh, and any recommendations for a non-alcoholic (or very lightly alcoholic) cocktail would be welcome, since I see references to their amazing drinks. Someone mentioned a virgin pomegranate and lime drink? Thanks!
  13. We get take-out from there regularly. Ate there a couple of times and service was very friendly and helpful. The bread is delicious and the chicken kabobs are excellent (I recommend the ones with veggies included - they do a nice job on the veggies). I highly recommend the "zereshk polo" rice -- I'm sure I have the first word wrong, but it's the slightly more expensive rice with bayberries and saffron. Scrumptious. We also usually get the side dish of a little "salad" -- really a selection of herbs and scallions -- with walnuts and feta. The nuts and feta are a great addition to the kabob/rice meal.
