  1. There's a spot in a Centreville where restaurants go to die.  After two Indian places met their maker comes a new contender.  Frito Chicken.

The place has an interesting story:

Mar 15, 2018 - "Frito Chicken Gives Ashburn New Fried Chicken Option" by Chris Wadsworth on theburn.com

My wife met the owner yesterday who invited us to give it a try.  She was very nice and we didn't feel like making dinner tonight so we gave it a try.

"Frito Chicken is the brain child of Amina Khan. She’s was born in Pakistan, raised in Canada and has collected a wealth of recipes. Over the years, friends have told Khan that her chicken recipes — both fried and roasted — are some of the best they’ve ever had."

We got the strips which were spicy and an 8 piece chicken.  The yuca was all done perfectly.  The potatoes and corn were fine.  The fried chicken is the star here and I urge everyone to give it a try.  Remember, it takes 20 minutes for it to cook so be patient.  It is worth it.

  2. I'm holed up in Burke this week at my parents house cramming for an exam.  I've been treating myself to lunch and have three more to look forward to.  Any recommendations of ones in Springfield that I must do?  Probably going to do Thai Gaan Waan and Afghan Bistro again.  What should I do for a third?

It's not noted here but if you are in Springfield and need caffeine, you need to try Cervantes Coffee.

  3. So Stumptown was bought a few years ago and their quality has been going downhill.  Cafein has switched to Coava coffee from San Diego and the switch has been great.  I always worry about small shops but Cafein is always packed whenever I go... which is almost everyday..... my coffee is often waiting for me by the time I get to the register..... don't judge me.... I can stop anytime I want to.

  4. Have not tried Mission but I have heard good things.  I want to try their Baby Backs at some point as I am a big fan of those.

Back to Hammerdown though.  Went back today.  I've lived in NOVA most of my life.  I've eaten BBQ in Texas, North Carolina, Kansas City and Alabama.  I'll say it right now.  Best ribs I've had in Northern Virginia.  Hands down.  Better than Dixie Bones.  Better than Willard's.  Absolutely incredible.  Apparently the word is out about this place as they were mobbed.

  5. Opening in late November comes an exciting new entrant to the Loudoun County dining scene.  Located near Lenah Run, west of Stone Ridge, this BBQ joint is one to keep an eye on.  As far as I can tell, the owner used to have a successful food truck and leveraged that to open this store front location.  I happened to be at Gilbert's Corner this weekend to pick up some pastries from Arno's.  On my way back I saw this place had opened, and the parking lot had filled up.  Intrigued, I dropped in to give it a try.

They sell brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs and smoked sausage along with several sides.  The weather was too cold and the ribs weren't done yet so I tried the brisket, sausage and pulled pork.  Everything was excellent.  The brisket and pulled pork were very moist and flavorful.  We normally go to Willards for BBQ and we liked Hammerdown's brisket and pulled pork better.  The sausage was about the same.  For sides we tried the beans and the mac and cheese which were also good.

I'm looking forward to going back and encourage everyone out in that neck of the woods to give it a try.  Call ahead to make sure they are open.  It looks like they're not open everyday (which is probably a good thing).

  6. Right off of 66 at 234 business in a sketchy looking strip mall comes my latest food find.  Judging from yelp I am late to the game but I've been here twice in the last week.

The first time was the Wednesday before thanksgiving.  I stopped in long enough to get some lumpia because who doesn't love lumpia?  I bought two orders and brought them home where they were promptly devoured by my children.  Mind you, they had already eaten.  That was supposed to be my dinner....

So anyways, tonight, after a non-scream ridden visit to Santa at Merrifiield in Gainesville, we stopped for dinner tonight.  First of all dining here is more like eating in the kitchen of your best friend's Filipino grandmother.  This is a good thing.  Secondly.  We tried two of the daily specials.  A vegetable dish which was like a mild coconut curry and a pork stew.  We also ordered one of their breakfast specials, the one with sausage, and of course, 4 orders of lumpia.

Everyone, including all four of my kids liked everything.  Mind you, all four of my kids never like everything (Well, except at ABC Canteen).  It's hard to find but I encourage everyone to give this place a try.  It is literally a couple minutes off of 66.

  7. Been a while since I posted but I think I found another place worth reviewing.  Got a fun Saturday planned? Maybe you're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, if you have enough time.

If your suburban angst has you going to Target and Costco and Chantilly then you should treat yourself to a meal at Chennai Express.  Recently opened, this place is tucked away in an industrial park in Chantilly in the former Talking Turkey space.

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu India.  A state in the southern part of the country and the menu is designed accordingly.  Do not expect to find Butter Chicken or Palek Paneer,  Do expect to find authentic food prepared with care.  The owner is passionate about his food and it shows.  We stopped in on Sunday for some carry out.  I'd like to tell you what I got but I could not pronounce most of it.  Regardless.  It was all good.

Most important is that they do Chicken 65 right.  No sweet sauce for this.  Just dry, crispy juicy chicken with just the right amount of kick.  There isn't a menu posted yet but who cares.  Check it out.  Its a great addition to the Chantilly food scene.

  8. I hadn't seen anything on them so I thought I would give them some press.  They have been open since this summer and we've been twice.  Both times we got the Donner and the Boregi and both times it was quite good.  Service was also quick and helpful and the owners were willing to answer questions about the menu.  If you are in the area give them a try.  I don't see them that crowded and I want small places like that to succeed.
