  1. We had my son's birthday party last week. We ordered pizza from Paisanos (A step above some of the local options) and of course over-ordered so we had been eating Pizza for a week. I was sick of Pizza. Really sick of pizza. Fast forward to Saturday. I had a baseball game in Clifton (Really it is Centreville but they call themselves Clifton). Sick of pizza or no, I was close so I made the trip. I bought a fresh regular pepperoni pizza for carry out and went across the street for ice cream and had pizza and milkshakes with my boy. It's cooked in a wood oven and I don't know enough about pizza to know if it qualifies as NY style or not. All I know is it is good. Damned good. So good that I am trying to rationalize another trip out there. I will hazard to say that this is the best pizza I have had in NoVa. Better than Tony's in Fairfax. Better than Ciro's in Centreville. Better than Church Street Pizza. The sauce is excellent, the cheese is excellent. The toppings are fresh, and seem to be of a higher quality. They have a restaurant with other dishes. I have not tried them. By virtue of the pizza alone I would put this in italics in the dining guide. If you live out that way and haven't gone yet.... go. If you are going, take me with you.
  2. Tucked away in a strip mall in Centreville is, what I consider to be, a very solid Pho place. I've been there a few times over the last few months and its been solid every time. I haven't explored the menu that much, essentially stuck to the pho but since it is only 7 or 8 bucks a bowl it hits a certain price point. If you are in the area, and are in the mood for a quick, cheap lunch - give them a try.
  3. If you're like me, you often find yourself needing to get a flat tire fixed AND wanting a lobster roll. Its a horrible feeling. Why oh why can't I do both at the same time? Fear no longer - Lobster Maine-ia has you covered. Located in a non nondescript industrial park, along with several used tire shops, Lobster Maine-ia has become a go to location for the procurement of lobster. Of course, I am only kinda-sorta into Lobster but the product is fresh, the prices can't be beat and for a couple bucks they will steam the damn things for you saving you busting out your largest pot and traumatizing yourself and any witnesses when you try to drop them in. Of note, on weekends (at least the last time I have been) they also have lobster rolls. They aren't fancy by an stretch of the imagination but they are tasty and a welcome change over the nearby chick-fil-e where they know me by name. They seem to be branching into other products and they seem to be doing well (they've been written up in the post).
  4. Ok. This place is part of our regular rotation. Its nestled in a little strip mall near the nicest trailer park you'll ever see. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here. I have also never had a great meal here either. Everything I have had is in a solid 7 range. The Carnitas, Barbacoa, and Stewed chicken are probably the best. Put them in an enchilada, burrito or taco... it's kind of the same. On Saturdays they have a Kid's eat for a buck promotion.... So I find myself here once a month. Most of the time they have a woman in there that does balloon animals. She is an artist. Really some the most elaborate balloon animal creations you'll see at a Mexican restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday (or anywhere else). Hey... I have three kids.... these things are important. With that said, they are doing a good job of playing to the Chantilly/SR demographics and tend to be full on a Saturday. My favorite thing here is actually their breakfast burritos. I like them better than Anitas (heresy!). The difference between a breakfast burrito with chorizo here and at Anitas is that El Fresco actually puts chorizo in theirs. If you are in the area, they are worth trying. I always get the chorizo with red chile.
  5. I used to work in Chantilly Looking at the dining guide I would do the following: Add in Milwaukee's Frozen Custard and put them in italics. Worthy of adding (and probably needs a thread of it's own is El Fresco Mexican which is located near Picante and Thai Basil. Hell. I'll add it. I'd probably place them around Don Churros. There is an Eggspectation in Chantilly which is a local chain but pretty solid as far as breakfast food goes.
  6. I think they are down to the Chantilly location so we can probably take chain out of the title. They are still putting out a high quality product. If you are like me and you have family from Milwaukee, you appreciate the difference. If you get there in the summer they do Italian ice. The mango one may be better than any of their custard. (and I really like their custard).
  7. Le Mediterranean Bistro has some Moroccan dishes. Check them out here: http://www.bistromed.com/.%C2'>
  8. The best naan in Northern Virginia. That's right, I said it. Let m back up. As a GMU alumni I follow Tyler Cowen. A few months back he wrote this place up. I used to work near it so I had been years ago (right after they opened). I had not been impressed at the time. Being in their recently, they either cleaned up their act or changed hands. My kids have swim lessons at the Swim School in the same shopping center. I got the bright idea to take them their Saturday night for the open swim which runs right until bedtime. Keeping small children up late had an obvious result, chaos. My 4 year old was in full on rampage mode (Like something out of Archer, but without the guns). It was 8:00 and against our better judgement, we took them to a restaurant to feed them instead of ta place they could trash and still allow us to get out with our dignity intact. It was amazing..... tood got my kids to shut up, be still, and eat quietly. We ordered the lamb korma, butter chicken, chicken kahari and two kids meals (chicken kabob and seekh kabob). My 6 year old loved the chicken, my 4 year old loved the seekh kabob. The other entries were fine. The kahari was the star. If/when I go back I will err towards the Pakistani side of the menu. With all that said, if I want chick peas, Rawal Kabob is better. I prefer the kahari at Khan Kabob. But the bread.... oh my, the bread. Bug huge flufy fresh pieces of Naan. Perfectly cooked. Not dry and the perfect texture to sop up some sauce or another. I'm not sure how well it would travel, but eating it fresh out of the oven there..e highly recommended.
  9. I've never had a bad meal here. Of course, I've never had a particularly good one either. It has always been "good enough." With that said, after two years the Centreville location is shutting down. Its a shame because I think they sunk a lot of money into that place.
  10. I don't want to pee in anyone's cornflakes but I think I am in the minority on this one. When I first saw this I thought "Great, it's like point of rocks creamery!" I've been twice and left dissapointed both times. The first time I probably bought 5 pints or quarts of various flavors to bring home. Of the 5, the pina colada was good. The rest were just.... meh. Several still sit unfinished in my refrigerator. I did get a good milkshake though. The other thing was the service, The line took forver... turns out it was high school graduation day that way so half the staff was out, so they get a pass on that one. The milkshake was good enough to get me to give them another try. Second time, just stopping for milkshakes. You had high school seniors running the place. My milkshakes were forgot. After 10 minutes when I asked if they were coming, I was told they were making them. Meanwhile, the staff is screwing around and having fun in the back (hello, I can see you). After 10 minutes I ask again... "Ooops, sorry, we forgot." The staff that had been screwing around scramble to get the milkshakes. The milkshakes, while good (especially the whipped cream) are not worth a 20 minute wait. Here is the thing though, the product at point of rocks creamery is noticably better. Hell, milwaukee frozen custard is better. I desperately wanted this place to be good as I am out that way a few times a year but my two experiences suggest that it is nothing worth going out of your way for. That makes me sad.
  11. My parents love the fried tacos here. I can't say I have ever had a bad meal here. I've never had a great one either. As far as bars go that happen to sell food, they do a pretty good job at it. Probably with less overhead than Alto plaza.
  12. I wouldn't say it is the best but Pho Aura in Chantilly does a pretty good rendition of a Banh Mi. Fried eggs, grilled meats, all the fixings. Lunch special usually comes with a spring roll and a small soup.
  13. I've been here three times. If it was on the other side of Herndon, I would be here all the time. Their fresh bread is great. My go to dish is a granada sandich. Meat, pickled vegetables and a curry sauce. Be sure to try the mushroom soup if they have it when you are out there.
  14. The taconazo is my go to dish at Guajillo. One of those, chips and hot salsa and the rest of my day is going to be damned good. Likely going to skip dinner as well. I'm usually leavin DC at lunchtime about 3 or 4 times a month. If I want mexican it is here or taco bamba. If I come here, I don't have to deal with the lines.
  15. I've lived in Centreville for over 10 years. They have been open since what, 2008? I have never once gone but considering the cash that they sank into that joint, you have to be impressed that they are still open.
  16. I used to work next to the Chantilly one. Pro tip - during lunch, call ahead and pick up. Skip the line.
  17. Family was in town for Clifton Day. The pizza cafe was selling slices of pizza to the teeming masses. In an effort to calm a grumpy three year old I bought a couple slices. Just want to say that it was probably one of the top slices of pizza I have had in Northern Virginia. Word must have gotten out because when I swung by to get another slice, the line had tripled. Now I need an excuse to get to Clifton.
  18. Cheap food. Good coffee. Ambiance. Its just where my college buddies and I hung out, or would end up the evening.
  19. This is a shame. For two years of my life I lived at Tastee 29 diner. Literally, I was here probably at least five days a week. The old school coffee machine that looked like something you would find in a World War I battleship was a thing of beauty. It could take maxwell house coffee out of a little food service bag and brew the perfect cup of coffee. I was near there recently and wondered what the new place would be like. 10-15 dollars a head would not attract me if I was still a college student.
  20. Been twice. Food was very good. Probably my favorite nearby itallian place. First time the service was bad. Second time the service was adequate.
  21. Try the ones at El Fresco on route 50. They don't have the green chili offerings but if you order a breakfast burrito with chorizo in it you will actually notice the chorizo in it.
  22. I probably hit this place once every three weeks. Just want to say that their Rojo Pozole is one of my favorite dishes in the area.
