  1. The Apple House is not really in Loudoun. With that said, it is awesome. I've been going there for 20 years. I was just there on Saturday and me and my three year old destroyed a half dozen of the apple ones. In other news, from time to time they will have a notehr flavor like pumpkin or blueberry. One other thing. Their food there is solid as well. We've had breakfast there a few times. The sausage is always tasty and I recall the pancakes being good.
  2. I've had some excellent tacos from El Molino off of centrevllle road. The tortillas are fresh and if they aren't used, they turn them into chips.
  3. Well stop the presses. I am eating at Don Churros today with my wife and kids and I notice an open sign on Karaikudi. I walk the three year old over to burn off his energy while aiting for food and lo and behold - the place is open and serving the buffet. I guess they really were closed just for renovation....
  4. Went there on Friday to take one for the team and see how far downhill it went. Closed for Renovations. Never a good sign, if I were a betting man (and I am!) I would say it never reopens. RIP If anyone gets wind where that chef goes, let me know. His cooking was awesome.
  5. I went last Thursday. Highlight was the carnitas taco. That was worth the trip. The chorizo was a little dry but had promise. Lengua was ok. My main complaint is the tortillas. Just don't think they are that great. They appear to be out of a bag purchased from the latin market next door. Guacamole and Horchata were quite good as well. Going to have to try the pozole next time
  6. We went last Saturday to the Springfield location. Got lucky and got our orders in before everyone and their dog came in. Place was doing a brisk business. With all that said the burgers were only ok. Mine was medium rare but still very dry. My wife and I commented that we had better burgers at Fudruckers. The most notable part of the evening was my three year old inhaling his two sliders and being the first one done. I agree with the move to de-italicize the place.
  7. Went again because we were close and the boys wanted fish. Got the fried scallops per the above recommendation. My wife who doesn't like scallops liked them fwiw. Also got the guac appetizer which prompted this exchange with my wife. Me: Oh, I figured out why the food is so salty here. Guess where the head chef came from. Wife: Sweetwater Tavern (With the answer being Artie's, this was apparantly a nice guess)
  8. We went last night. The fish and chips are always a safe choice and the kids loved them. I really want to love this place but I have one real complaint about them. Three, really. Salt. Salt. Salt. The last two times I have gotten anything besides the fish and chips whatever dish I have gotten has been over-salted. Last night it was the mahi mahi. The fish was salty. The sauce was even too salty. Don't get me wrong, I love salt. I can down a bag of salt and vinegar potato chips in 5 minutes flat. They just need to cut down on the salt.
  9. Its not a restauraunt but it is a purveyor of food. Run out of an industrial park in Chantilly, Lobster Maine-ia has gotten some recent press. I've gotten some lobsters from them and I am not a connaisseur but they were darned tasty and cheaper than a grocery store. Its also worth it to have them steam them for you (costs extra), put them in a cooler and take them home. Recently they started selling lobster rolls. As I need to be near there every sunday for a kids activity, I have swung in and tried them twice and as far as lobster rolls go (maine style) they are pretty darned good. They are 10 dollars and are zero frills, but they have a goodly amount of meat. Check ahead of time before you go, they have limited hours and weekends are best but they are worth trying if you are in need of a lobster fix.
  10. Well. That was fast. I thought they were doing something right by only being open a few days of the week but I think what it comes down to is location location location. That location was awful.
  11. I love this place and try to stop in if I am in the area. Unfortunately for A and J, which is also great, I tend to pass them up for some more ramen. The last time I was there I misordered and got the pork belly ramen instead of the lunch special, 13 instead of 10 or something like that. It was delicious with a deep rich broth and a lot of tender but not extra fatty pork belly. I was a little surprised by the bill but all in all it was worth it. The sushi I have had from here has been of high quality as well. Better yet, the place always seems busy when I am there so it seems they are doing well.
  12. Reporting on Le Bledo made me think of it. There is a quick-e-mart type Vietnamese store in Centreville that sells Banh Minh called Park and Shop. It is by the 7-11 on 29 near the bowling alley. The sandwiches are 3.50 and are made on fresh baked bread. Worth a try if you are in need of a snack and you are in the area. In fact, they sell the bread for a quarter a roll in a huge box up front. I've been known to pick up several, an onion, a pepper and some frozen sliced rib eye and make some KILLER cheesesteaks.
  13. It has been a while since I have seen a post here. I stopped in for lunch on my way into DC yesterday. I was the first person there and picked up the Taconazo which was a collection of 5 tacos (chicken, lamb, steak, fish and pork). I wasn't a huge fan of the chicken one but all of the others were excellent. Seeing as it worked out to 2 bucks a taco, I thought it was a killer deal. The pork taco in particular was excellent. Roast pork that was crispy on the outside and very soft and juicy on the inside just going to prove that if you add pork fat to something, it will taste good.
  14. Man. I must have gone at the wrong time. Was there near closing once on my way back from DC and picked up a variety of Banh Mi. All very disappointing. It's been over a year since I have been there so I could not offer specifics but next time the urge for Banh Mi strikes, I would likely hit DC sandwich.
  15. Stopped for carry out on my way home. Since it was carry out I didn't get the Goong Gleur, afraid that it wouldn't travel well. I got the Drunken Noodles Seafood Combo and the #31 which was some kind of tofu/ground pork dish. Both items were excellent. The wok hei on the drunken noodles was nice. Having taken the Thai cooking class with Nong from Thai Basil, I would say these drunken noodles were better.
  16. I always made a habit of stopping in her on my way through Leesburg. Usually I do the donner and fries and leave happy. Coming back from PA yesterday I stopped in yesterday and got the bratwurst and fries to go. The brat was very dry and the fries, while cooked well, were so salty that they were near inedible. Next time I pass through I think I will try the Cajun Experience instead.
  17. The seafood bar used to have high chairs. I took my 2 year old all the time and he would demolish the kids fish and chips. Fairly annoyed that they got rid of them. The bbq place in Fairfax is often adequate and can be a good value.
  18. Uncle Fred does the Farmer's Market scene. In fact i think he does two markets at once with his kids or partners doing the others. I've hit him a few times when he came to Centreville. I never liked any of his sides (just my opinion). I've had some very good chicken's from Fred. Periodically he smokes baby back ribs. The first two or three times I had them they were amongst the best I had ever had. The last time I got them they were absolutely horrible. Really it highlights the problem with BBQ in general. Inconsistency. Tyler Cowen's latest book dedicates a chapter to BBQ. Its an interesting read.
  19. Just to comment on this as I was a HUGE fan of Ben's. I have mixed feelings about this place. It was over a year and a half ago and I was in South Carolina on Business. On our last day there our customer drove us 30 minutes out of town to a BBQ place. It was awesome. As I sat there eating I thought to myself, "damn, I miss Ben's." I fly back (after being diverted through O'Hare) and get an e-mail from my Dad. It said - Ben's is coming back. Needless to say I eagerly anticipated the opening of this place. I've been for dinner a few times and found it ok but not like Ben's. I think I need to try them for lunch when the BBQ may be just out of the smoker. While I have had mixed experiences with the BBQ, the sides have been pretty good. The last Saturday I went the place was absolutely mobbed which bodes well for their long term survival.
  20. Did you know there was an ethiopian restaraurant in Centreville? Neither did I. I was running errands with the boys a week ago when I decided to run into this place to get a menu. They had no carryout menus so I reviewed one of the normal ones, hoping that my 2 and 5 year olds wouldn't trash the place. On a lark I decided to get one of their combo meals, as I have never had ethiopian before. I'm no authority but my wife and I enjoyed everything. Here is where it is important to take note. They are also a bakery. I spoke with the owner and she takes pride in the deserts they make in house. I've been back twice, just for deserts, workign my way through their selections. The cheesecake and carrot cake were the stars. It is located in the same strip of mall as Bon Chon. Here is their site: mannabistro.com. It is fairly well hidden so I wanted to be sure to write them up because I think it is worth checking them out. Someone else can tell me how their other food rates, but their deserts are good (and reasonably priced).
  21. Just swung by again for my fix of Brown Stew Chicken. The Peas and Rice with the gravy from the chicken is freaking awesome.
