  1. Following a terrific wine class at Cork Market, I took a few minutes to wander down 14th to Estadio...hoping for a peek inside. My efforts were rewarded! Estadio was in full swing, preparing for a "private party" this evening -- perhaps a soft opening? (And - how do I get on the invite list for these things? I promise to be good!) The space looks wonderfully rustic without being rough. Lots of wood and wrought iron, plenty of seating but not on top of each other. In the center of the space it looks like there is a serving bar stocked with all kinds of lovlies. Sadly, no menu posted yet. I'm looking forward to checking out Mark's new place... for the time being, I'll just have to go into training at Proof. :-) It's a tough life.
  2. I am ashamed. Embarrassed. Chastened and mortified. I have spent years searching the streets of DC and NoVA for a solid, spicy, complex, pint-sized bloody mary. I have lived 3 blocks from Acadiana for...well, since before Acadiana existed... and only on Monday did I realize that the best Bloody Mary in the city was right under my nose. Shame on me. (Yep - I said it. Put it right out there... Best. Bloody. Bloody Marys.) The credit goes to my grandparents. Visiting town, stumbled upon Acadiana for lunch Friday before I returned home from work - they insisted on returning for brunch on Monday. Who am I to argue? Best. Bloody. Marys. (w/Jalepeno olive and pickled okra! I might have swooned a bit.) Moving on... we shared several apps at the bar - the beet salad, deviled egg trio and the ridiculously tasty roasted oysters. All were tasty (the eggs were a bit contrived for my taste but yummy so no heartburn there) but the oysters stole the show. I didn't ask about sourcing but man, they were tasty. We moved on to share a 12 Napkin Roast Beef Po'Boy and a Muffaletta. That Po'Boy would make you want to cry. It is a sight to behold and a wonder to devour. Fresh roast beef and chewy, crispy bread that you won't lose a tooth to and all the fixins. This is a damn good sandwich. The Muffaletta was quite tasty as well with a satisfying crisp to the bread and an excellent meat/cheese ratio. It was a bit saltier than I would have liked but we certainly didn't turn it away from the table. Closed the meal (and the visit) with the vanilla bourbon bread pudding. Described by my entertaining, Manhattanite grandparents as "cute" -- the plate was devoured within minutes. I'll be honest. I have pretty much written DC Coast off a few years ago. Ceiba fell off the list last fall. Acadiana was a wonderful surprise and a delicious reminder that restaurants can't be judged by their siblings. I'm looking forward to retuning, early and often.
  3. It's been much too long since I have visited Dino. I'm hosting my wonderful, Manhattan-ite, slightly persnickety Sicilian grandfather and his wife this weekend. They announced this afternoon that they were looking for "good, low key Italian." Dino fit the bill perfectly. We started sharing the caprese salad and fried squash blossoms (and a pretty solid attack on the bread basked) - all truly delicious. The caprese reminded me that I need to visit my friends from Blue Ridge more often at Dupont Farmers Market. The blossoms held an unexpected delight with a "hidden" sardine with the blossom. My grandfather was still talking about how delicious these were well after the plates were cleared. For entrees we shared the Lasagnette, Canelloni and an extra appetizer portion of the fried artichokes. Ridiculously. Delicious. Best part? I got the leftovers! Breakfast tomorrow is going to be sooooo good. We closed the meal sharing a Gianduia "Nico" - my grandfather is NOT a dessert guy and he thoroughly enjoyed this dish. Delicious deep flavors of chocolate and hazelnut, crunchy toasted hazelnuts, chocolate sauce and fresh whipped cream. I'm running extra miles tomorrow with a smile on my face. Totally worth it. Many thanks to Dino for impressing my hard-to-impress family with a delicious, affordable and comfortable evening. We'll be back much sooner... K PS - I enjoyed a glass of a delicious "explosive" red that started with an "O" - it doesn't seem to be on the online wine list so if anyone stops by and notices it on the menu, would you please let me know what it was? Thank you!
  4. I am so bummed to have missed today's picnic - it sounds wonderful! Looking forward to meeting everyone at the Fall event!
  5. I am tasting lots but would love to develop more confidence. Don - how can I help convince (coerce?) you into public service?
  6. I would leap at the opportunity for wine classes with Mr. Don Rocks!
  7. Leftovers from Sunday ...kicked up a bit Fresh egg linguini with ramps, leeks and sorrel mushrooms (it was a good day at Dupont Farmers market) ---kicked up today with wilted arugala and a bit of Pt Reyes Blue Cheese (Cowgirl Creamery) Not bad for a random Tuesday night of leftovers.
  8. Stopped by the Mt. Pleasant location yesterday for brunch with a good friend. Good service at the bar and a very comfortable place to relax on a lazy Saturday morning/afternoon. We didn't venture far into the menu (BLT for me, chicken wings for him) but the food was solid. I particularly enjoyed my BLT -- hard to go wrong with applewood smoked bacon and remarkably ripe tomatoes....a nice complement to the summery day. However, my quest continues for a really good, spicy (not just hot), thick bloody mary to clear the cobwebs.
  9. Just a quick note to add my thanks to Nicole and Chef Todd for a truly delicious evening. In fact, despite having woken this morning still full and swearing "I'll never eat again;" I have just finished off the absolutely amazing rutabaga soup that Nicole was sweet enough to send home with me as I missed the first part of the meal. It was thoughtful touches like this that seemed to pervade the meal. From the mussels (delicious with or without the aioli) to the creme carmel, each dish was clearly conceived and presented with thought, care and a desire to share new flavors in familiar forms. I am embarrassed to say that I live in DC, just off the green line metro and this was my first time at Radius... I look forward to returning soon. Also - a shout out to DanielK for organizing a great event and to my fellow Rockwellians for a great evening!
  10. And with that... this Shrimp became a Clam. WOO!
  11. I had a lovely RW experience at Kellari on Tuesday evening. The RW menu isn't extensive but is certainly comprehensive. Apps - My friend inhaled the octopus and I the calamari. The octopus defintely won the round. Cut into smaller pieces (for the skweemish (sp?)I imagine) and incredibly flavorful - not tough at all. We tried the scallops and lamb chops for entrees. A draw. For dessert we ordered a chocolate cake and the yogurt. Both were VERY delicious. For the non-chocolate lovers out there, the yogurt was transcendental. Portion sizes were enormous despite of RW. I'm coming off of some very good greek meals in NYC over the last month or so (Kefi and Peryali). I would have to say that Kellari rivaled Kefi in quality (excellent). It's a great RW deal - I'll definitely go back to try the rest of the menu.
  12. Enjoyed the Promenade Gourmande with a friend on Friday evening. The food was, of course, lovely. The parmesan-bacon soup and the halibut broth were highlights...and you cannot beat the chocolate bar dessert. Oh my... that desert... Our mistake to order the tasting menu at 8:55pm... the entire evening felt rushed and perfunctory, we simply never expected that from the staff at Citronelle. We had a lovely time but if I'm honest with myself (and with you!) I won't rush to return. I had a wonderful meal at New Heights earlier this week and several great meals at Proof in the last few months. Citronlle just didn't feel as "special" or innovative as we anticipated. Delicious but just missing something... Perhaps that's a good sign - the caliber of DC dining has raised the bar for everyone.
  13. I couldn't agree more with Walrus' post above. I had a lovely evening at Eventide last night with a good friend and both the bar and the restaurant were great for our long-overdue catch-up! We started in the bar with a cocktail and both were wonderful. I had the lingonberry/champagne cocktail, my friend enjoyed the gin/orange bitters cocktail. For the life of me, I cannot remember the names of the drinks. Mine came highly recommended by the hostesses and they did not steer me astray! Bar area is great. PACKED but good to see this early on... Upstairs dining room is incredible. We were in awe of the space for the first 15 minutes... couldn't stop talking about the design and the huge yet warm space. Food was great - carpaccio/cobia for me, scallops/pork for him. Glenn came by to give some advice on the wines by the glass. We were both pleased but my sav. blanc was the winner of the evening. So much so that we popped back into the bar for another glass after dinner. (Well, that and the fact that my car was locked in the nearby garage. Who closes at 11pm?!) Needless to say, I'm looking forward to returning and already planning a brunch trip! Great add to the area!
  14. Ahhh... wish I could take credit but I cheated a bit and used the online menu! :-) Great to meet you today - looking forward to the next event(s).
  15. And a good time was had by all... We took up 2 tables at North China this morning and a good thing... we needed all the room we could possibly get for the multitude of plates that came out of the kitchen. I'm sure I'm leaving something out but if memory serves correct, the plates held: - Steamed Buns (delicious if a bit of a thick wrapper but it held lots of soup!) - Chinese crullers and sesame flatbread - Sweet Soymilk - Taiwanese-style meat pie (didn't get to try this one but it looked interesting with its transparent outer casing) - Mushroom in Bean curd skin (favorite of Daniel K's daughter!) - Smelt with peanuts (a surprising favorite) - Roasted duck - Spicy pork with chili pepper (hot, hot, hot!) - Crispy chicken - Taiwan style (quite nicely done - best with the accompanying basil leaves) - Crispy squid - Taiwan style (split decision - some folks really enjoyed, some found it a bit chewy - either way, good flavor) - Hamburger - Taiwan style (didn't try this one either as I was already pretty satiated but those that tried it enjoyed it!) - Jelly fish - Crispy intestines (my first time with crispy intestines - it was... OK. Not as "Fear Factor" as I had thought) - Sausage - Taiwan style - Leeks steamed dumplings - Cold seaweed - Fried noodles with Chicken, Beef and Shrimp - Pea shoots (simply prepared, very delicious and a nice counterbalance to the other dishes) - Very smelly tofu (I'm not sure what the real name of this dish is but you could smell it from across the room!) - Sesame balls Anyone else that attended, please feel free to jump in and provide your opinion on the dishes... or any that I missed! On a personal note, many thanks to everyone for a warm welcome to my first Rockwell event. I'm looking forward to joining for many more! Kat6185
  16. I've never attended one of the Dim Sum Sundays and am interested in checking out the locale dim sum scene. If there is still room, I'll see you at North China! Katy
  17. This is disappointing... I just posted about my wonderful birthday dinner at Hook. Best of luck Chef, I look forward to visiting your new restaurant on my trips home!
  18. Obviously I've been celebrating waaay too much this month as I failed to update on the final result! First, let me say it was a full weekend of fabulous food at Poste (first time, we'll be back!), 2 Amy's (Birthday eve farewell to the 20s), and Proof (a phenomenal meal from start to finish). However, after thinking about how I wanted to ring in the new decade, I decided I wanted something somewhat low-key (I didn't want to be too aware of how loud we laugh), fun and new. We went to Hook and had a fabulous time. It was a great meal and a great meal experience. We all tried a fish that we had never had -- and often times had never heard of prior to the visit. It was a delicious way to kick off a new decade. :-) Many thanks for all of the recommendations. My resolution for my shiny, fresh new decade is to be more adventurous! So, expect to see me at Corduroy, Sushi Ko, Citronelle, Komi and many, many, many more! Cheers!
  19. So... I'm turning 30 next Saturday and my family is coming to town to help me kick off my new decade in style! I'm looking for ideas for a fun, unique, elegant dinner (no singing servers!) -- but comfortable. I know CityZen is fabulous but I also don't want to have to worry about laughing too loudly with my family. I have reservations for Corduroy but have not been to the new location and am a bit concerned. I would love to try Komi but am somewhat intimidated by my lack of understanding of their menu. Is it all prix fixe? Are 20 courses mandatory? How does it work? Please help! Kat
  20. Call me a newbie (OK, I am but still..) - I had no idea that you could ask for the garlic mashed potatoes! I've only been in parties of 2 but I'll certainly be making the request next time regardless of party size. Thanks Michael! (BTW - was that you in the plaid shorts and Hawaiian shirt on Wednesday?)
  21. Generally a lurker but since I've was taunting Proof to "Please, dear lord OPEN ALREADY!" this spring.... It's only fair to post my first impressions from dinner last night. First - Mark, clearly you'll have to expand the bar soon! Good lord, it was packed from the moment we walked in at 9pm to when we left at 12am. Love it! Second - Awesome. Yummy. We did a selection of 3 cheeses --one from each section and the only one I recall is the Mt. Tam but the other two were equally interesting and delicious. We shared the mushroom/corn gnocchi. A huge mistake - I want it all to myself next time. Also shared both the salmon and ricotta flatbreads, the tuna tartar and the meatballs. I didn't love the meatballs but they were tasty. I'd probably try something different next time. Everything else is definitely a must-try. Third - The wine was wonderful. Loved being able to try several different types/tastes (Salice Salentino, Pino Noir and ... one that I have already forgotten - drat!) and have knowledgeable folks help me choose. Which leads me to... Fourth - Our server, Sarah (Sara?), was great! Very knowledgeable and friendly - she definitely guided us through the menu and the evening. We didn't have a chance to meet the famous Sebastian this time but then, we were ordering by the glass and --if I'm being honest-- the idea of a somelier approaching my table actually terrifies me. (I don't know enough! He'll sense fear!) Yeah, I'm working on those issues. In closing, it was a wonderful evening and I cannot wait to return. I keep hoping to make my permenant perch in a corner at the bar but I guess I should just be happy that Proof is such a success in my 'hood. I guess I wasn't alone in anxiously awaiting its arrival! Welcome to the neighborhood Proof. See you soon! K
  22. OK, they were supposed to open in March. Then, they were supposed to open May 25 (aka today!). Now - their website says June and after a walk-by today, it isn't looking promisng. What's the real issue going on here? It's been well over a year in the making... Come on guys! Open already - the neighborhood is crying (OK, maybe just me) for good wine and a mature atmosphere without a velvet rope (yeah, I dissed your neighbor on G St. What of it?). Signed, Your wanna be biggest fan
  23. Now that we're in mid-April...anyone heard an update? I get nervous when things take this long to open. The sign has been up since last year - that's a long time to carry the investment... That said - I'd also like to be first in line when they open! :-)
