  1. Tried Kapnos Kouzina in Bethesda last night. Very well-staffed, very crowded and very loud at 9pm on a Thursday. Ordered 3 dishes, all of which arrived within 5 minutes of placing the order. The half fried chicken and brussel sprouts were excellent, and the hummus was better than most, but not up to the level of the other 2 dishes. A welcome addition to Bethesda.
  2. Very quiet on a Wednesday night around 9. Tried 3 appetizers and 3 mains. The stand-outs were the chicken shish kebabs (Shashlyk), the Plov (a rice dish with lamb, carrots, chickpeas and raisins), and the compot (Homemade fruit drink with apricot, sour cherry, apple, and peaches). Overall, portion sizes were on the large size, particularly the shish kabobs (3 skewers and a side of vegetables). Looking forward to going back again.
  3. Went for the Friday night DR special. An amazing value on some excellent food! All the dishes were enjoyable but the stand-out for me was the Duck Confit Hash. A delicious mix of flavors and textures. Thanks Jeff. It was an excellent way to kick off the holiday weekend.
  4. Took out of town guests to Hellburger last night. Burgers were amazing as always. However, the menu has changed so that there are now 2 burger sizes to choose from. There's the Little Devil, 1/3lb. for 5.99 or the Big Devil, the original 10 ounce burger, formerly 5.99 now 9.99, a $4 price increase. For me, Hellburger just went from being the best deal in town to the best expensive burger in the area.
  5. I was there for the $20 Tuesday meal and it was excellent. The restaurant space itself is modern and well-designed. Service throughout the evening was very attentive. On arrival, I had a Mango Martini at the bar which was very good. Not super-sweet and very refreshing. A bunch of donrockwell folks were at the bar. Introductions were made and everyone couldn't have been friendlier. All of the food was exceptional, but I'll highlight my favorites. From the appetizers the Chili Cheese Toast stood out, as did the vegetable cutless (a beet flavored square of crispy goodness). My favorite of the entrees was the Salli Boti Jardaloo (the tender lamb struck just the right balance between sweet and savory). All of the dishes were well-spiced and flavorful, and this was an incredible meal for $20. Thank you very much to Chef Seth and the rest of the staff at Spice Xing for hosting us. Thanks also to DanielK and the other donrockwellers for making a new person feel so welcome.
  6. This place opened a few months ago and I've become a big fan. There's a sushi bar (sushi is decent but not the real star)and other Japanese dishes. There's chawanmushi (an egg custard soup) that's very tasty, as well as delicious onigiri ($2), Japanese rice balls filled with either dried plum, seaweed, or grilled, salted salmon. There's a separate room with 6 tables with grills built in for Japanese barbecue, Yakiniku. There's a choice of several types of meat (short rib, skirt, tongue, etc.) and I've tried most of them and was really impressed. Please let me know who else has been there and what you thought. Website is at: www.satsuma-jp.com
  7. No one else found this item for $79.99 worthy of note: THE 9 POUNDER Actual weight after bun and condiments, 15.4 pounds! Two heads of lettuce, 6 tomatoes, 2 red onions, 4 whole pickles and a river of our mojo, ketchup and mustard. Also comes with a bottle of Maalox. If you can eat it in one sitting it's free.
