  1. Keys Fisheries in Marathon was as good as ever when I was back there this fall. I sent a friend there about a month ago and he said he went back again for more the next day.
  2. If you don't mind paying for parking, you can park in the pay Market Common lot and go to the Cava happy hour. I'm fond of the pork gyro and eggplant dip.
  3. Excellent! I called and confirmed this morning for the 9th. Let me know if I need to do anything to switch that.
  4. I used to look forward to the St. Gennaro feast every year because it meant zeppoles. Seemed like everyone carrying one of those paper bags was smiling. When I moved to HI and was introduced to the similar malasadas, I figured missing the feast wouldn't be so bad. Thanks for bringing back good memories!
  5. Would love to join if there is room. Either night works for me, but would prefer the 4th.
  6. Great pictures of the market, Trelayne! I grew up in NY and watched the USGM transform that neighborhood. When I made that first post, I was living in Tallahassee, FL - a good produce desert. Wandering through the market, even so early in the season, was uplifting.
  7. In this vein, the Gallery Place location of Chop't gives you an extra topping if you order before noon and California Tortilla gives you free chips and queso if you order before a certain time (I think 11:30). I have several co-workers who take advantage of these offers and it definitely spreads the rush a bit.
  8. It was part of the name of an apartment I was looking at. The roots of the word suggest they tried to dress up "tall building" and make it sound island style.
  9. Mine is a made up Hawaiian word that cracked me up when I first encountered it when living there in 1994. I've used it on boards and websites since then. I also use it as a fake Hawaiian salutation. My grandmother, not knowing it was gibberish, used it too. My dad and I sign all email and cards with it.
  10. And if you do hit a cyclist, don't tweet about it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-22602141
  11. I'd be sad to see it go. Unless replacing it with some other opportunity sparks new participation.
  12. Wish I could, but I foolishly booked something else in that slot that I can't re-schedule. Next month!
  13. That's how we used to kill them in the lab before the students dissected them. Quick and worked every time unlike some other methods used.
  14. I've had the pleasure of spending much quality time in the Keys for most of my life. There are many, many places that serve key lime pie with whipped cream, including some of the classic establishments. I much prefer whipped cream to meringue on my key lime pie.
  15. Dorie Greenspan's recipe for tart dough from Baking From My Home To Yours says to keep the leftover raw dough to use to patch any splits.
  16. I'm in (with the caveat that depending on when my niece and nephew arrive I might have to bail)
  17. Went last night at the request of a friend. I figured it was better than dealing with Restaurant Week crowds. It exceeded my expectations. The menu kind of wanders all over the place, but that makes it a good place for diners with varied tastes and appetites. There aren't too many places where a group of friends can get a sushi and duck carbonara. My carbonara was rich without being overwhelming and had more duck than I expected. The butternut squash kind of got lost in the mix and it was a tad salty. But, it was a satisfying snowy evening dinner. My friend raved about her fire dragon roll. She thought it had a great blend of salty, sweet, and tangy but could have used a bit of something crunchy to add textural complexity. Fabulous food? No. But a notch above what I've had at Old Ebbitt's or Clyde's and I would definitely go back. The multiple large bar areas would make for good group happy hours.
  18. On the bright side, this year the US will finally have catch limits in place for all federal fisheries. No other country has that. Still a long way to go, but these are the sort of steps that helped bring back the stocks Dean mentions.
  19. Alsatian apple tart from Dorie Greenspan's Baking From My Home to Yours. The color is a little off i this picture - the crust wasn't quite so dark in person and the apples were a bit more golden. Love this recipe. Ridiculously easy and definite crowd pleaser.
  20. The first tuna of the year typically goes for a ridiculous price. Some of the guys I used to work with in New England had great tales of the fights over fish. They'd start talking to buyers while still on their boats bringing the tuna back to port. A lot of them catch one fish a summer and that makes their year.
  21. They were at the Clarendon Whole Foods yesterday, but very, very bitter. My co-workers were laughing at me because I winced with each bite.
  22. Same here. I didn't mean to imply that I was impatient for a quick fix - just passing on the additional information in case it helped with that fix.
