  1. This year the 9th Annual Cow Caper Spring Festival is is SAT., APRIL 24 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and SUN., APRIL 25 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Hayrides, Ice Cream & Butter making Demonstrations, "Moo to You" tours of the dairy, helping to feed calves, and great pork and beef BBQ. You can get more info here: South Mountain Creamery When we first heard about the Creamery, we drove out to have a look around. It makes a great day trip. We get milk, butter, eggs, and fabulous ground beef delivered regularly, with no delivery problems. Enjoy!
  2. Love that blog!!! Thanks for the reminder!
  3. From today's chat with Tom: "Washington, D.C.: Wow -- NO restaurants in the Dining Guide from Capitol Hill? Why is that?? On the surface, it would seem to have the clientele and the location. Why do you think the Hill cannot attract or retain good restaurants? Tom Sietsema: Why no inclusions from the Hill? Most of the places I tried for the guide there -- Cava, Matchbox and Montmartre, among others -- were just not that good or consistent this year. And Locanda closed, unfortunately." I hope that will get Montmartre back on its game!
  4. Wow, this takes me back. I lived in Berlin in the late 1970's -- still very Cold War Central. Great memories; I really loved that city. Fabulous currywurst! I can still smell it. I have yet to taste its equal. There was a currywurst wagon near where I lived which also served super meatballs which I enjoyed until I found out they were made from horsemeat. That was too much for me...
  5. But only 20 out of 100? It seems harsh to think that the majority of the citizens of Our Nation's Capital must follow those evacuation routes into the suburbs for delicious, affordable food. Is it possible that they try to evenly distribute the restaurants throughout their circulation area? What restaurants in the city would you have added??
  6. Well, I tried Matchbox on Capitol Hill today and it was not bad. My friend had a crabcake sandwich which he enjoyed very much and I had the veggie pizza. Thin crust, not overly burnt edges, and complex tastes. As it cooled though, the crust took on something of a cardboard texture, so that each succeeding piece (I only managed two & 1/2) was less enjoyable than the previous one. Did that stop me from taking the rest home? Not really, even if as a formality! Got a bit of a surprise there. When I picked up the "to-go" box with the remains of my pizza it popped open to reveal --- shock horror: pepperoni pizza. Our waitress was nearby and she took the box from me and went back to the kitchen, returning with another box with some veggie pizza in it. Not sure where it came from as we'd had the mistaken pepperoni at our table for 20 min. The burgers looked good on the next table. I think I would try a mini-burger next time.
  7. Thanks, I might just do that! I guess I assumed they were always open for lunch because it seems 8th Street has enough people looking for lunch but perhaps not. If I do try it, I'll post something here.
  8. The old/new market is open again and it looks fabulous!! What a relief for the vendors and for the neighborhood!!! After years of wrangling about "restoring/renovating/refurbishing/etc." the Market, I'll just say that no fire ever resolved a thorny architectural problem so neatly. I salute the Mayor for getting it done on time, in budget, and for reminding us all what a treasure we have. Has anyone else been yet??
  9. I'm really set on table service. I want a nice place to hang and think and just be for a little while.
  10. I've been to the Capitol Hill location twice and Georgetown once. I really want to like this place because it's good to have a cafe on which one can rely. Unfortunately, I don't seem to order the right things. First of all, I drink tea, not coffee. I ordered tea with milk, please. The tea arrives with no milk. I ask for milk. During this lull in service, I begin to pour my tea and see that my tea cup is not clean. When the milk arrives, I inform the waitress that the cup is dirty and ask for another. She brings another cup which is clean and I pour the hot water over my tea bag only to discover that this is not the tea I ordered. This requires another exchange, complete with new tea and tea cup. Yikes! I'm already exhausted and all I wanted was a cup of tea. I love soft boiled eggs. Very homey and nutritious. Very scary at LPQ. Liquid yolk? Yes, perfect!!! Liquid egg white? DISGUSTING... I send it back and order oatmeal which was really delicious. All in all, it's too much work! Next time, just the tea and a roll or something baked.
  11. I saw that Matchbox was dropped from this year's Washingtonian Cheap Eats. Any idea why?? Having heard such great things about the one downtown, I was really looking forward to trying the 8th Street location. Unfortunately, before I had a chance, I started seeing all of the bad press on the 8th Street version. Bummer! I'm still looking for good pizza on the Hill.
  12. I was surprised (and saddened) to find so few Cheap Eats located in the District. Is our cheap food not good enough or our good food not cheap enough?
  13. Love this place!!! I just have a burger (the cheeseburger with carmelized onions & mushrooms --- yummy!!!) which is filling enough so I can't comment on the rest. I really want to try the marshmallow shake. It sounds delicious but not what I would have for a meal. Maybe I'll drop by on the weekend for a taste.
  14. Some cherry pie which I baked earlier today!
