  1. Dining in Clarksburg, MD I thought I would write a few capsule reviews on the dining mecca of Clarksburg, MD in Upper Montgomery County. (This is at Don Rockwell's suggestion.) GrillMarx This is an outpost of the GrillMarx restaurant in Olney. It is a steakhouse with pretentions that it isn't quite able to live up to. Steak is good but not great. Other dishes are well-prepared but priced a bit high for what you get. That being said, where else are you going to go in Clarksburg? The cocktails are good; and there is a lively bar scene in the evening. The Sunday brunch is just plain disappointing. Pazzo Pomodoro A nice Italian restaurant with a brick oven for pizza. I have only gone once. I enjoyed my meal but find the price point a bit high for my liking. Red Bowl A Chinese / pan-Asian restaurant that's not pretentious. It has a small dining area and does a lot of take-out business. I wouldn't drive across the county to go here, but I love this place! It's walking distance from my house, and it's my happy go-to when I want take-out. They do a decent job on their limited Thai menu. Chinese food is very good. I haven't tried the sushi but I have seen other diners enjoying it. Prices are great for what they offer. They definitely beat the Chinese restaurant competition in nearby Germantown. Benningan's A casual chain eatery. Nothing special, but fine for meeting with friends when you are more interested in socializing than the food. Pizza 500 Decent take-out pizza joint. The pizza was better under the previous owners, but unfortunately suffered somewhat after the change in ownership. China Spring Fair Chinese take out food. I no longer have any desire to go there after Red Bowl opened: Better food and closer to my house! Suibway (2) Yes, happening Clarksburg is so trendy we have two Subways! How to decide between them??? <grin> Actually, I'd rather head to the nearby Potbelly or Firehouse Subs in Germantown. --- Laurienzo Brick Oven Cafe (Koozebanian Fazoob)
  2. I went with my sons to China in April, 2015. We asked our tour guide to arrange a meal at one of the top "Peking Duck" restaurants in the city. The guide took us to Da Dong (the WangFuJing location). It did not disappoint. We were impressed by the modern decor. The roast duck was the best I've ever had! (I have not ranked Peking Duck as one of my favorite foods in the past, but now I will have to change my mind.) I would take a trip back to China for a dinner at Da Dong!
  3. I see that this restaurant has very mixed reviews, but the Peking Duck has gotten outstanding reviews. We decided to go here for my sons birthday as he loves Peking Duck. Unfortunately, this was not one of the better nights of this seemingly inconsistent restaurant. The service was indifferent to poor. (We would have thought we would have gotten more attentive service since at 8 persons, we were the largest party seated in the restaurant.) Cocktails were below average. I was not impressed with my hot and sour soup. My father got the Happy Family seafood dish and that was delicious. 6 of us had Peking Duck (we ordered 2 and 1/2 ducks). Sadly, the chef did not come out of the kitchen to carve the duck in front of us. The duck was decent, but not great. (My sons and I had just returned from a trip to Beijing and this restaurant couldn't even begin to come close to the awesome duck we had there!) What was really odd was the way the duck was served. First came out a half duck. It took another 20 minutes before we saw the next order of a full duck. 30 minutes went by before the last full duck came out. Everyone else was pretty much finished with their meals by the time the last couple started eating their Peking Duck. This would have been somewhat acceptable except the passive aggressive waitress would remove food from the table without checking to see if we were finished. The last duck was removed while it was still being eaten. We should have complained, but by the time we were feeling so dispirited by our experience that we just wanted to leave. The food was not terrible, but not worth the drive from upper Montgomery County where we could do just as well for a lower price. The service was abysmal. We will not be back.
  4. I've been to the Gaithersburg location. I really enjoyed the salmon! Other food is hit or miss but I'm willing to give it more tries.
  5. I was in NYC last month and ate twice at Hill Country. The brisket was really awesome as were the ribs. However, it was very pricey! I am definitely looking forward to it opening up here.
  6. I read the article in the WaPo and stopped there on the way home from work. I got two brisket sandwiches and one corned beef sandwich, Unfortunately, they had run out of Rye bread but I got my sandwich on Pumpernickel. The brisket was the best I ever had! The corned beef was also excellent but didn't have the awesome flavor of the brisket. I will be back when they have more brisket!
  7. I personally enjoy the IPA and Kolsch at Brewer's Alley in Frederick, MD. They have monthly brew dinners which are a good value @ approx $40 for complete dinner and beer with each course.
