  1. Went to Comet Ping Pong last night for the first time. I'd heard a LOT of good things about this place (plus having a Living Social coupon didn't hurt!). Comet was packed as expected, indoors and out, even on a Wednesday. My friend and I shared two apps and two pizzas, with a couple half carafes of red wine. First of all, their hot wings blew me away. I almost didn't order them, as I consider myself to be a bit of a buffalo wing snob (I've been to Anchor Bar multiple times and use Anchor Bar sauce at home). But the waitress highly recommended them, so I gave them a shot. The flavor was dark and smoky, unlike anything I'd ever had on a wing. They also came with a creamy horseradish dipping sauce which complemented them really well. I'd come back just for those! Our other app, the wood-roasted cauliflower, was surprisingly good as well. My first thought was "Who puts a cauliflower appetizer on the menu at a pizza place?" I'd recently discovered that roasting cauliflower is the only way I like it, and their cauliflower was the best I've ever had. On to the pizza. My friend ordered the Stanley, and added garlic. I ordered a simple cheese and pepperoni pizza. At first glance, their pizzas don't look like much. They're smallish and have a kind of greasy appearance. But once you taste it, you finally realize that everything Don has been saying is true. Even my friend noted that my simpler pizza was better because it allowed the basic ingredients to shine. I don't think I've ever been this impressed by a pizza and wings combo. Not to mention that the place has more character than fifty other restaurants put together. If I didn't live in old town Alexandria, I would come here all the time. Nevertheless, I will return as soon as possible. James
  2. I haven't seen anyone mention Ceiba on this thread yet. I work right across the street from them (in the Old Ebbitt Grill building), and they have the best Cuban sandwich I've ever had. I've eaten there many times now, and I keep going back for the Cuban. It's not cheap (around $14), but it comes with fried plantain chips and is well worth it. That said, I have yet to try the El Floridano truck, and have high hopes for that as well. I've had a Cuban at the Cuba Libre location in Philly several years ago and remember it being very good. I would also recommend Cubano in Silver Spring.
  3. Decided to try out Againn for lunch today. Splurged on their steak & oyster pie ($21), because I haven't yet had a good steak pie on this side of the pond. That is no longer true. The flavor was excellent, and the crust on top was golden brown and delicious, which also helped me to mop up the broth at the bottom. My only quibble was the small salad that accompanied the dish; I didn't like the choice of greens or the dressing, but that was solely a point of personal taste. Since I had almost ordered their ham & lentil soup too, I asked our waitress whether next time it would be possible to substitute a half-order of the soup instead of the salad, and she didn't see why not. My friend had the fish burger (theirs is cod, $14) and liked it a lot. I had a few of his fries and enjoyed them as well; love the aioli. And I'm usually not one to bother mentioning a restaurant's bread & butter, but Don is right -- it is REALLY good. Am definitely going back, but will probably try some of their lesser-priced items next time (their fish & chips and a few sandwiches are $12, burgers are around $14). Odd that their online menu doesn't have prices on it though. Will definitely go back for happy hour too; they have Kilkenny on draft! James
  4. Well said, TSchaad. And thank you Michael for the response and clarification on the Hell-Burger locations. Keep up the good work (and the good fight)!
  5. Took a couple of friends from out of town to Hell-Burger for lunch around 1pm on Monday, and was surprised to find that the old Ray's space was closed once again. They were still using the outdoor tables there though. Amazingly it wasn't too crowded, and we were able to get a table with little difficulty. Our order got a little mixed up, but everything came out tasting great as always. Does this mean that ML has changed his mind and is moving forward again on RTC?
