  1. Man that sucks, Norm's is a great place to shop for beer. They've had a really good relationship with the Whole Foods down the street, customers going back and forth between them.
  2. I was there on Tuesday night about an hour before closing since I was in the neighborhood. It was still packed and a full line. However since I was only ordering a black and white shake, really appreciated the "Cold Items" roped line which let me bypass the regular line. Still from waiting on my order and observing the counter and kitchen, things moved pretty quickly. The Shack looks modern and the design fits well within that section of town. It felt like a slightly more upscale joint that Good Stuff eatery and Five Guys and is much more cleaner visually as there were no photographs of people on the wall. Even after 10 pm on a weeknight, the tables in the back room were all full. Since I had eaten dinner earlier in the night, this was a shake trip only. I was a little surprised by the size of the shake, basically it's the same cup size as Potbelly's and perhaps that coloured my impression of the taste in a negative way. Still, the shake just tasted rather bland.
  3. Back in the 80s, 14th Street was where the drug dealers, prostitutes, and cabbies would hit up Yum's for late night dining.
  4. In my experience of listening to music taken from 78's or 1920-40s, it sounds great, in the beginning, to hear remastered files that remove pops, clicks, etc...but over time the sound wave manipulations tire my ears. Now I prefer the scratchy versions. Do you know if there are any plans to add music from other countries such as South America or Europe from the era? If you work at the Library, again many thanks. Great work. Loved the last Stradivari Concert!
  5. Who do you consider top tier for milk shakes? I actually think Good Stuff Eatery does milkshakes pretty good, there Black and White is not bad at all.
  6. It's pretty darn cool. Been listening to for a few days now. Do you know if they will be expanding the recordings into the 1920-40s? I watched the online video for the restoration process and have to applaud the hard work of the entire team. That's a lot of painstaking intensive work.
  7. Kimchi Chronicles CookBook Q&A With Marja and Producer Eric Rhee
  8. Earlier today, I saw this posted on DCist and wondered what the response would be here on the forum. He must not be getting enough attention these days to be talking this nonsense.
  9. Thanks Don and everyone else for the suggestions. On the spur of the moment, I thought about changing the direction of travel and everyone liked the idea. I'll post a review of our experience afterwards.
  10. Due to babysitter time constraints, our friends can only get out of the house (2 1/2 year old twins) within a certain time frame, and frankly, I'm a little stumped at the moment on where to suggest. Next Saturday ~7:30pm. Maximum driving time from Vienna, VA ~ 1 hour. No Turkish, Indian or Japanese. Ballpark ~$100 per couple, not a big drinking night
  11. Last time we went to Belga, ordered two Trappist Rochefort 10s that came with the glass, if I recall correctly. Very nice.
  12. Preview Part 1 and Hugh Jackman narrating the trailer. Looks like it's playing in NYC on WNET/PBS this Sunday before being pushed out around the country to other stations. I'm hungry now.
  13. Ten years ago, there used to be a place in NYC that was only soba noodles, but he sold the place or the lease and moved back to Japan. Doing a quick search it seems a few new places have popped up, here's a NYT review of Soba Totto. If you ever do make it to Tokyo, here's something to try. Classes at the Tsukiji Soba Academy.
  14. I did not see the episode, but wasabi is just a normal condiment that can be used when eating soba noodles. Maybe, the soba Master felt he should use wasabi to get a complete tasting? Hokkaido is about 500 miles from the Miyagi Perfecture where the tsunami had the most destruction, so any permanent damage in Hokkaido should have been minimal. In contrast, seeing a friend's photographs of her neighborhood, Inshinomaki, is devastating. Personally, I've never visited Hokkaido, but it is on the list to visit because of one snow drifting beautiful onsen (spa) and Sapporo. Will have to be on the look out for the episode. Japan will recover, actually the Shinkansen service to Northern Japan just resumed. Hopefully for their sake, this tsunami is more a 100 year old event than a sign of something more frequent. Thinking about Japan led me to this wonderful trailer and back to No Reservations. Jiro dreams of sushi Sukiyabashi Jiro
  15. Wanting a quiet environment to be able to pay attention to your sweetheart is not age dependent or maybe I'm already at the age where my hearing is going and quietness is an appreciated quality of a shared meal. Still, in general it's just sad that most restaurants these days do not design dining rooms with noise reduction materials in mind. Thank you for the detailed report on the jacket and tie or lack thereof requirement. From your report and others, it sounds like a good place to have dinner with another couple. Actually, I think the inbetween-ness of casual upscale dining / high quality destination level restaurant is a smart move by Chef Trabocchi especially in this economy. Sounds like there is room to grow in a relaxed manner. Looking forward to dining there.
  16. A great first post! Do you feel it is a getting dressed up and romantic evening kind of night? Or rather a noisy fun tasting many courses 4 person kind of meal?

  18. It has been a long time since graduate level Biochemistry in college, but the science behind the cellular interactions that are processed in the liver of the different kinds of sugar, glucose, fructose, and alcohol were very impressive.
