  1. It was. It, and Zarela's, were the 2 best Mexican places in NYC for a long time.
  2. Went to a Brooklyn place last night that will go nameless. Nice corner with outdoor seating on both sides. Tables spaced apart, waitstaff friendly and wearing masks. Good food menu & a nice selection of wines by the glass, with good pours & prices from $11-15. Large retactable glass doors open with a good jazz band (Miles Davis/Coltrane type stuff) playing inside for the diners outside. A Spanish chef who they said worked in some very nice places & who uses good ingredients with tasty results. So, we’re drinking wine (they even had a decent Txakoli that I liked) and the waitress takes our food order. The menu has “small plates”, “large plates” & “sides”. We decide on a tuna tartare from the small plates & fried eggplant sticks from the sides to start, then short ribs w/polenta & a scallops dish from the large category. After taking our order the waitress says that it’s “sort of a tapas place” and the chef puts out dishes as they’re ready. Okay, we sort of chuckle, saying “if possible the smalls before the bigs, not all together”. “Can’t promise that” was the response. Okay. We’ve survived this before. Well, every one of the 4 dishes was excellent but (& you think you know what’s coming, huh?).... Nope, not all together. First comes a single large plate of the short ribs. Huh? We shared it and, just as we finished it, out come the scallops. Really? As we finished it, laughing, here comes the eggplant sticks and, yep, the tuna tartare last. As I said, all was really well prepared and tasty, but WTF!! Although this was exactly where we’d like to spend some time reasonably often, as it was delightful in all other ways, we’ll never go back. I mean, what can we possibly say to them that they shouldn’t already know? Its a strange new world we live in.
  3. It looks like indoor dining at 25% might well start end of September. Meanwhile, we've been eating outdoors at several of our favorite local places for over a month now (approx 2-3x/week) and enjoying it.
  4. It’s incredibly strange for me to be watching on tv & not being there for at least several days, perched on the back courts watching non-“stars” & great doubles. However, due to this, I now get to watch the major matches that I never see &, since both Denis & Felix make it to my screen, I’ve watched them both - great viewing. At any rate, this also let me watch Djoker’s match. I agree that the stupid mistake that got him removed could’ve happened to any player not paying attention to anything but their inner frustrated voices. However, you also have to look at Djoker’s luck at NOT accidentally blasting someone with his ferocious slam against the side wall only minutes earlier. A slight mis-hit on that, going a foot or so higher, and... That first outburst shot should have been enough for him to pay closer attention to the frustration build up & self manage. Or maybe he should learn to channel his bad behavior to his mouth a la Conners or Johnny Mac.
  5. We were probably at a lot of the same concerts. Saw Cream at Madison Sq. Garden back then with a silly revolving stage. Also the Bangladesh Concert. Wound up standing on line with Joe Cocker for a table at Mitali Indian Restaurant on E. 6th St across from the Fillmore. CS&N did a week at the Fillmore and I caught a couple of these. If I remember correctly (always a tricky proposition), Mountain's post Woodstock band had a drummer who played with his hands, not drumsticks (Corky?). I also missed Woodstock. Over a hundred great concerts all told. It's a wonder that I ever got thru High School, let alone college, between the music, the tennis/squash & the "recreational" pursuits.
  6. I sold my Eno stuff when I offloaded much of my vinyl several years ago. I only played this one once - that was enough. I’d rather listen to Yoko screeching. Inventiveness has its limits. However, I do occasionally miss the Eno/Fripp disc.
  7. Me too. And Jimi. Then I went off to Stony Brook, which had a concert series to rival any. Caught the Allman Bros. there instead. Glad I only registered for afternoon classes.
  8. Okay then. After all this, I’m gonna suggest that Barbados stays put & doesn’t start floating north. At least not without stopping somewhere for cold weather gear.
  9. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I thought I was old then, writing my aged perspective on this topic. Well... its 8 years later and I'm well into my Medicare and Social Security days. And I never did make it back there.
  10. I WANT THE ANSWER NOW! (please). Unless anyone else cares to play along.
  11. Definitely have too much time on my hands but I still don't know for sure where in Canada I'd land. I know that Barbados is east of everything else but does it hit Nova Scotia or is it even further east?
  12. Many years ago, my job at the NYS Office of Mental Health was to oversee the contracts with local non-profit corporations that served the mentally ill, including the large homeless segment of that population. One of the agencies that I admired from the time they were formed to the time I retired was Pathways to Housing, then a local NYC agency. It was headed by an Executive Director, Dr. Sam Tsemberis, whom I became friendly with and even played tennis with (beating him to a pulp of course). If you (Don) or anyone else is so inclined, here's some background info on it https://www.pathwayshousingfirst.org & here's the link to the D.C. agency https://pathwaystohousingdc.org. I don't know the current leadership & certainly not the D.C. folk, but I'd guess that they're continuing the great work they've always done. And, of course, if you want to reach out to Sam and drop my name, he may not hang up. On specific topic, I greatly appreciate your above post and think that any such help is greatly needed at all times, but especially now.
  13. So, it appears that all the threads are now read only except for "WTF" which, apparently, has allowed me to start a new thread 🤯. At any rate, before this too ceases to allow comments, let me use the opportunity to thank Don for creating & maintaining this board over the years and to thank the rest of you for providing some interesting and entertaining commentary. I'll miss this forum, even though I remain active on several others & get some kicks that way. By the way, I think the messenger function is still working as well. And, just in case Don is only carrying out a lengthy April Fool's joke... well, ya got me. 😡
  14. Well, obviously our plan to be in Montreal for the month of May has been cancelled. To their credit, the folks renting the apartment to us waived their cancellation policy and are allowing airbnb to refund the entire amount. We'll remember that if/when we look to re-schedule. Since we were driving, that was really the only financial outlay, so we're fine on that front. I felt guilty cancelling the restaurant reservations that we already made, as I'm sure they will need the business if/when they re-open. Oh well. We're hoping that we all get through this in good health & think that maybe we'll try again for August. I guess we'll see.
  15. It took me a day to process that DaveO passed away 2 months ago and I didn't realize it. He was the person that I had the most (virtual) interaction with over years on this board and I'll miss him. We went back and forth, both on the board and thru pm'ing. He was supposed to go to a reunion of friends in Brooklyn awhile ago and we discovered that the friend's house was only blocks from where I live so we made tentative plans to go for a drink. Then the reunion got cancelled. And, when I was in D.C. a couple of years ago, we made plans to meet at Dino's Grotto. But he wound up having to go out of town that weekend so, again, we didn't meet in person. We were/are basically the same age, discovered that we had very similar ancestry, knew some of the same people and enjoyed discussions/arguments on sports, current events and anything else we came across. I loved his presence here and looked forward to reading his thoughts and ideas. We will all be the less for his absence.
  16. Had lunch today with a couple of old CH friends, one of whom worked mixing & sound engineering some of his work. His (Tyner, not my friend) style was never easy for me to listen to, but I appreciated it all the same.
