  1. Poking through the dining guide looking for Silver Spring options, I have discovered that this is closed.
  2. So, dinner at Stable on Friday. I had to make these reservations 3 weeks in advance! And then our 4th called out sick. Luckily, going from 4 to 3 was OK. We were seated near the door. So, we heard a lot of the interactions at the door. Most of those who came in without reservations were quite understanding and polite. Some of them were pleased to get bar seats. Those who were turned away were all polite. Those who had reserved outside and thought that they could get inside seats were not so. Dudes, we can tell that you made the outside reservation and then were playing dumb about inside availablity. So could the staff.
  3. Tomorrow is the boy's birthday. He wanted dinner here. So, after a day of museums, we headed here, to find it locked up tight 20 minutes after they were supposed to open. No notice on the door. No notice online. Nothing on the voice mail. There was another pair of folks, also hoping for bar seats. I hope all is well, and that they will be there when we try to have our anniversary dinner here next month.
  4. Went for the first time in a number of years last night. It was fine, but I dunno how I feel about eating there regularly again. Service was good. Place was dead. Upstairs was closed. Sangria, all the apps, churros, chocolate.

    DC History Center

Go visit the DC History Center, in the Carnegie Library building across from the convention center. It's small exhibit space, but they do good work. Right now, in addition to the DC History timeline exhibit, they have an exhibit of LARGE prints of old panoramic photos, The Big Picture. Seriously, these pics are life size! And the prints are so sharp. I am always amazed at the quality of these historic photos. If you have any interest in local history, this is a worthwhile visit.
  6. Spent some time here today with their 50th anniversary exhibit, This Present Moment, which runs through April 2nd. Quite good - lots of cool new pieces, in a variety of materials and styles. Well worth a visit.
  7. We went a while back - and it was GOOD! I intend to go again. (we went museuming today, but did not get here.
  8. Finally managed to get here tonight (I LOVE fondue.). 3 of us. Cocktails were quite good. We had the pate and the cheese flowers for apps. So tasty. Then fondue - classic. Added some apple slices and side salads. Also delicious. Vermicelle for dessert, along with some of the house infused liqueurs. Another hit. Courtney was our waiter, and she was great. So it's on this list for a return.
  9. Beer here on Saturday. The Ruby Dragon (a British style mild) was one. Quite tasty. And on cask! Still QR ordering, which is annoying. And the bar was full, so we got a good table, played cards, and had good beer. Service is good, despite the QR menu. God, I hate those.
  10. The patty melt is back on the menu! YAY!!! Also, our favorite bar manager has moved on, but the new bar manager is great, and the beer list this weekend was exceptional. (And I can still find our friend Paul. Just not there.)
  11. Had dinner here last Friday. Sadly, there were not 4 bar seats, but there was a table for 4. So, popcorn chicken and corn cheese for apps. Various Korean beers and soju to drink. I had chicken wings. The boy had the spicy seafood bibimbap. Nothing is too spicy for him. This was! But he still liked it. There was also a spicy squid rice and a spicy chicken bibimbap. Neither of those were too spicy. Service was good, and friendly. We will be back!
  12. We have done Hamptons, and also found them decent. The boy's preference these days is Best Western Plus. They bought his favorite place in San Diego, and on that same west coast trip we stayed (randomly) at several other of their properties. Worked out well.
  13. Soup tonight. I am trying to make sure all things in the cabinets get used before they can't be. (See: barley.) Made it with chicken stock, because that is what I have (we make chicken stock from the carcasses of the many chickens that the boy loves to roast and the veggie scraps that we freeze.) It's OK, but was quite bland. I added some herbs! That helped. We will eat it, but he likes it better than I do. Won't make it again. Also, salad. And english muffins. Made some mushroom pizza earlier this week (more using stuff - pizza sauce and half a block of mozzarella), the regular flat kind this time. And of course, salad. And more using things! Chicken (from the freezer, left from one of those roasted chickens). Sautee mushrooms and onions in butter. Garlic. Deglaze with a little white wine. Throw in chicken to warm. Add enough sour cream to make sauce. We ate it over mashed potatoes. Also salads. Pistachio cream fettuccini was good, although the pasta fiend here (boy), thinks perhaps other nuts would be just as good. He's just not sure about sacrificing the pistachios. I liked it, and I am NOT a pasta fiend. Also, salad! (Now I have to figure out something to make with the 2 remaining ounces of pancetta for next week.) I made experimental root beer ice cream this week for desserts. Brought some root beer concentrate back from New Orleans, added 3 tablespoons to my standard vanilla ice cream recipe in place of the vanilla. It's delicious. Now I need a local source of root beer concentrate. Also, now I want to get some birch beer concentrate. Apparently Northern Brewer has it. Also, I need a good vanilla cookie recipe to serve with this. Sugar cookies don't seem quite vanilla enough.
  14. This is sad - we will miss them. When I read about this earlier, it explained why I was not able to make a reservation for the 4 of us on Friday. We are planning a 14th Street expedition, and after drinks at Crown and Crow, this was the plan. Now I am not sure if we should try to walk in and sit at the bar or the kitchen bar or not.
  15. I am so tired of fees. Roll it into the cost. It is a cost of doing business!
  16. A trip here last night with my yoga crowd, and a few added spousal types. So, me, a friend, our teacher (all boisterous types from the same part of the world), and 2 quiet spouses. Much food, much laughter, the spinach is so delicious, the chicken is very good, the boy still loves the catfish, and a few beers. The service is lovely. A fabulous followup to yoga class! It makes me happy to eat here.
  17. Guacamole is the best. I love taquitos. The boy likes them (never had them before me), but does admit he sees them as an excuse for a guacamole pig-feast. (The only way he will eat avocados, and he will eat ALL the guacamole if you are not fast.) I tried a new recipe today - ginger tofu. Nope. Like all the flavors in it, but too much of all of them, and the tofu texture was weird. The salad was good? Made some fun pizza earlier this week. That's always good. Also, salad.
  18. Cauliflower soup (from the freezer) tonight, with some leftover baguette. Also, salad.
  19. Returned to the bar here for the first time since the pandemic began. Happy hour! (then on to E Street Cinema to see Tar.) It was lovely. Good drinks. Loved the gougeres, and the Faux Gras, and the chicken nuggets. And service was excellent.
  20. I loved their New Orleans Cafe, around the corner in the space that eventually became Pasta Mia. More affordable than the Emporium, and the BEST onion rings!
  21. Been a week of things from the freezer again. But potato pancakes tonight! With breakfast sausage, applesauce, sour cream. And of course, salad to start. So tasty!
  22. New Year's Eve - we tried to order from Vace, but they closed early, so I made an expedition, through serious fog, across town to get pizza from Pete's. Still miss the Columbia Heights location, but this was a fine pizza. Large, extra cheese, pepperoni, garlic. It was enough for 3 of us with some leftovers.
  23. OK folks, if you want to eat here, head out. Tomorrow is the last day. Went over to Adams Morgan tonight to shoot some pool at Bedrock and eat at the bar at Los Campeneros tonight and discovered that tomorrow is the last night. We are sad because we love the staff and drinks here.
