  1. Oddly, they do the same to the church where I sometimes answer the phone. And yes, I always hang up too.
  2. Well, we were there last night. So, yes. Go early. We had no trouble getting seated at opening time (4 of us), but there was quite the line before we left. It was very good - as good as ever. We did the tasting menu and wine pairing. I had a little trouble choosing food, as the 2 main course options were a fish and lamb, and I am not totally keen on either. The lamb turned out to be really good though, and the one who ate the fish also liked it a lot. I will be dreaming about the root beer float dessert for a long time. I need a recipe! Also, that olive oil custard that was the amuse was a huge hit. So let's see: Amuse: Olive oil custard First: The pumpkin soup eaters were happy, so was the salmon person. I had the veal tongue, also very tasty indeed. Second: Lamb t-bone with lamb loin piece, with lamb bacon (tasty!) or cod wrapped in bacon on something involving a bunch of different beans. (the husband said it was tasty.) Dessert: Coconut something - I don't eat coconut, but the huband had this, loved it, and can't remember its name. Also, the root beer float dessert that I could eat endlessly...soooooo good. What was really funny - it's been several years since I was there, but Sharon, who used to be behind the bar and apparently left and returned, recognized me. I know I am a bit distinctive, but wow. This woman has an astounding memory. Quite the skill really. We are also going to hit the dining room once more before they close. I hope to be able to eat the tasting menu, although I may go for the veggie one, as I did last time, and share bites with others at the table, as I do not eat seafood and the tasting menu often has a good bit of seafood on it.
  3. I have done a couple of events there, and you're right, they really do a great job on events. I have also dined at the bar with generally good results.

    Is -> Was

They divided the property into 4 (or was it 5?) storefronts when Roma closed.
  5. I bought my appliances from Bray and Scarff in Bethesda almost 10 years ago now, and it was a great experience. At the same time, friends used a Bray and Scraff in VA and were very unhappy. I will not buy any more GE appliances though. They do not hold up.
  6. Hm. I made a bunch of cherry bounce this year, and was just thinking how good it will be in eggnog. This would be an even better use for it.
  7. Someone - I forget which farm - has had them at Columbia Heights.
  8. The engineer I live with, who is a decent cook, LOVED the engineer recipe format. It took me quite a while to get it.
  9. Thanks to all of you for the quick responses. I am afraid that the 7 fishes thing won't work as we have one vegetarian and two (including me) who do not eat seafood. All the help is MUCH appreciated.
  10. Thanks for the response! I'm going to send you a PM with a few questions about our person with food issues, but I think it will work. I really appreciate you responding. (I love Corduroy - I celebrated my MA graduation there, in the old space, and try to get in to the new place semi-regularly. It's always great.)
  11. Yes - and it is usually booked by July. We are WAY behind this year. We didn't know if we would be 3, 6, or 9 - and then it turns out that we are 8. Although that may become 9, but most likely not. Seriously, I think some people book for the next year as they leave dinner on Christmas Eve! OK, they did offer us 5:30. We can't do that. CityZen - Delicious, but too expensive. Also a bit noisy. Marcel's - Never been, have no idea The Oval Room- Never been, have no idea Equinox - Have enjoyed, although was not as good last time. Would consider, if people told me it was back to previous standards Vidalia - Am considering, would like reassurance that it is still as good as the last time we were there - a number of years ago! Plume - Never been, have no idea Tosca- Never been, have no idea Bourbon Steak - Doesn't appeal. Too steaky. Fiola - - Never been, have no idea New Heights - Oh, that's a good thought. Obelisk - - Never been, might be interested, but isn't it tasting menu only? We have one person with a limited diet, and I will not eat seafood. Corduroy - First thing we though of, but not taking reservations, and not certain they will be open. Charlie Palmer Steak - Doesn't appeal. Too steaky. Proof - Never been, have no idea 701 - Haven't been there in years and years. Should we consider it? Restaurant Eve - Good, but pricey and would prefer to stay in the city. Haven't been since the re-do. Should we consider it? 2941 - Would prefer to stay in the city.
  12. So, we usually go to 1789 for Christmas Eve dinner. This year, uncertainty in the number involved meant that we did not get reservations in time. So, I need to find a place along the lines of 1789 that can take 8 for dinner at 8:30 on Christmas Eve. That is, quieter, good food, good wine, can handle a table with diners from 16- 75 years old, and in general, a pleasant place to be. Who is usually open that night with a nice dinner? We called Corduroy, but they aren't taking reservations for December yet, and are not POSITIVE that they will be open that night, or when reservations will open. Too bad - this was our first thought. The last two times this happened, we went to Ris. The first time was great. The second time was a disaster, and we are not willing to risk that again. (2 of us have been back since. The food was good, but there were some service issues.) We used to do Ruppert's for Christmas Eve, but that is no more. We did Vidalia once - maybe that would work again. Anyone been there lately? I used to like Equinox, but haven't been in a long time, and have heard that it is not as good as it was. We'll be coming from SW DC, and would prefer to stay in the District. Help?
  13. Yes, I suppose. But it is on weck! And served au jus. I really like the bread generally. A good kummelweck roll and good roast beef, and this is a very good sandwich. (Serve it with salt potatoes.)
  14. Oh, that sounds good. One of the farmers at the Columbia Heights farm market has had pristines, and we have been using them for lunches. Very nice apples.
  15. We were there for the soft opening on Friday night. 3 of us, so we had 3 apps (pimento cheese, chicken liver, pretzels) and 3 entrees (fried green tomato sandwich, Mofongo, Mussels) All tasty, although we were not thrilled with the bread for the pimento cheese. As it was the soft opening, it may not have been the real bread. The food here is strong. We also had a selection of beers, all pleasant. Don, talk to the bartenders about what you want in a beer when you are there on a slower day. They are really good at telling me what I will like (why yes, they all know me far too well, as we spend a decent amount of time at Meridian Pint and there seems to be some overlap in staff). I am NOT a hophead, SO not a hophead. They always find beers that please me. Oh, and as for rye, try the 3 Stars Pheonix, a rye saison. I like it.
  16. The park is not as big a barrier as the river, but it is a dividing line. There are only SO many places to cross.
  17. We went for the first time this weekend. Lattes, Rosemary biscuits with ham and cheddar (and something else that I forget), donut holes. Then cookies for later. Very good. Service a little flaky, but very tasty. If only it weren't on the other side of the park! But we will be back.
  18. Fruit jellies and jams make good breakfast when stirred into yogurt. Or linzertorte. Or filling for muffins. Hot pepper jam on a sandwich with cheese and salad greens. Or next to a cheese plate. Or to glaze roasted chicken or grilled pork chops. Or a spoonful on top of mac and cheese.
  19. I have never priced eggs for boiling, and have never had one crack. But I do start them in cold water. Is that the difference?
  20. We did a lot of searching, and indeed, that is what we have done. Can't get some of these things locally. There are multiple places in the Pacific northwest though!
  21. Both Yes! and the TPSS co-op only have it as a tincture, and we need the actual root.
  22. So, the boy here is getting creative and going to make some bitters. But we're having trouble finding some of the ingredients - the co-op doesn't have them. Yes! doesn't have them. Penzey's doesn't have them. Anyone know where to find things like gentian root locally, or do we need to go the mail order route?
  23. I love Pam. She makes the very best chopped liver, and very very best corned beef. Go see her.
