  1. Restaurant names that are three capital letters make the Buddha sad.
  2. Paladar is OK, not worth going out of your way for. I eat at the Rockville location if someone else is paying (we had our corporate Xmas party there last year). The best thing that I have had there are the duck tacos.
  3. What SeanMike said. Redevelopment for that block has been well known. Random 6 month old article as an example. I have great appreciation for the Browns as businessmen (and purveyors of fine food and drink) (and people who have been very good to me). I think that we can all rest assured that they (like several other DR favorites who have experienced similar things) have foreseen this. Common thought at the time - "Tom , you're leaving the Four Points and are going to do what with a crappy old row house on 9th Street?"
  4. Lucky to win that one. If Ghana could finish, they could have scored multiple goals. US possession was awful. Thank Jeebus for Tim Howard.
  5. Had the Sideshow (Dry-hopped Sour Blond) at Blue Jacket the other day. That is one damn delicious sour.
  6. Anybody who wants a short course on why Andrew McCutchen won the MVP last year needs to watch highlights of last night's game (just ignore his little oopsie at 3rd base)
  7. Leaving Joe's today, I just realized that I've been eating the Triple Pepper Chicken there on average once a month for almost exactly a decade.
  8. After Rocky Horror, I'd have to go with the original La Cage aux Folles (1978).
  9. There are a few people around who know the nature of the work that I do. And I hesitate to proselytize too much, but as the father of two daughters, I felt the need to share the work that Peanut's soccer coach does. Please read his piece that is in the most recent Time magazine: "We Must Look At How We Teach Our Boys What It Means To Be A Man" by Neil Irvin on time.com Check out his organization MenCanStopRape.org
  10. <pedant> Actually it's about being Eastern European (especially Polish/Ukrainian). The Catholicism part is corollary (if you're Polish, you're Catholic). My WASP ancestors shat on the Italians and the Irish. The Irish and Italians needed to find some way to shit on the Poles and other Slavs who arrived a few decades later. "Hunky" or "bo-hunk" comes from the label of being "Bohemian and/or "Hungarian" and was later applied to all of the Slavs that immigrated to work in the mines/mills. When I was growing up, it was the equivalent of the N-word for those of Eastern European descent. It shifted into being a general term for teased hair, Chess King shopping, lower class mall rats (think Jersey Shore) without strict regard to ethnicity in the 80s. It was one thing for a boy higher up in the social order to screw a hunky girl, but god forbid a girl higher in the social order even be seen talking to a bo-hunk boy.</pedant> Sorry to hijack. It was a lovely story. I use your mom's stock pot and cuisinart on a regular basis and think of her and you when I do. : )
  11. Basically, Meyer was well-liked as a manager. Stargell was one of my heroes as a kid. I used to imitate his bat circles when I played little league (so did half the other kids in Pittsburgh). Home plate from Forbes Field (named because it was on Forbes Ave) is on display in its original position in the lobby of the Univ. of Pittsburgh Law School. And I still can't believe that Barry Bonds couldn't throw that cripple Sid Bream out at home plate.
  12. Kaldi's Coffee 918 Silver Spring Ave SS,MD. Nutty Buddy and I both spend a fair amount of time working from here. Good coffee and baked goods. Great friendly atmosphere. Fair warning - the chairs suck.
  13. I go to George's barber shop in the little 3 shop strip on Forest Glen (?) right off of Colesville just south of 4 Corners. George was a crusty old guy who has been gone for at least a decade. But the same Vietnamese ladies and gents are still cutting. My buzz cut (and the nice scalp massage I get from the ladies) is all of $15. They do full on straight blade shaves.
  14. <thread drift> Every time I see this thread, I think that it is about a small Mexican chain that I've visited a few times in Albuquerque. My review - Not bad. </thread drift>
  15. That's too bad. I wouldn't think that we were hard to miss. Just look for the bald guy in the Hawaiian shirt.
  16. Well, Jake, here's the damage... White: Venica Pinot Bianco, Collio, 2012 Venica, Pinot Grigio, Collio,2012 Gobelsburg, Gruner Veltliner, 2012 (x2) (Not my fault, JG broke the rules) Red: Andrian, Lagrein, Alto Adige, 2012 Verso, Negroamero blend, Salento, 2012 Rivera, Aglianico, Puglia, 2006 Grimaldi, Nebbiolo d'Alba, 2008 GIovanni Rosso, Barbera d'Alba 2011 Random dishes with random forks put in by whoever was hungry. The Gruner was great to start on a warmer day. I preferred the the pinot bianco to the pinot grigio. To me the grigio was just a little too one note, but still eminently gulp-able. My WOTN was the Rivera, but I think it was a little too geeky for most. The Nebbiolo was the biggest hit. I couldn't convince anyone to go in on some Orange wine. BTW - none of these bottles cost more than $55 and they were all delicious. Nicely done, Sebastian and crew. BTW2 - Very nice service to a flowing crowd that was ordering random things at random times, moving around at random, left at random times, and paid for random things (I think we got the math right, please let me know if we were off). Props to the bar and kitchen staffs. BTW3 - The lamb meatloaf sandwich is a thing of beauty. Order. Eat. Enjoy. BTW4 - No (live) animals were harmed in this production.
  17. Nice! I'd almost be tempted to drive down to Richmond if you felt like sharing.
  18. Shouldn't that be under the "To whom are you lighting up right now" thread?
  19. I occasionally stop by for lunch when I am working from home. More often than not, I am the only person there. It would not surprise me if the decision was made to close the joint down.
