  1. "Every douchebag in the world started drinking Jameson," says Derek Brown.... "It's like one of those things where you're like, "˜I don't know. Do I want to be drinking Jameson if that guy's drinking Jameson? Because that guy has date rape and vomit written all over him, and I'm not into that.'"

How can I drink Jameson, especially at 10AM in a strange airport, now that I know Derek and the world will look at me as I throw it back and think "date rape and vomit"?

A treasured part of my mis-spent youth has been stolen away by Derek Brown. I will get him for that.

(Tom Brown, who correctly observes in the same article that "Jameson is a breakfast whiskey," will be spared.)

I drink a lot of Jameson, almost always in the presence of someone born in Galway (or because of him). I love Derek, but he's too harsh on Jameson because of the "douches drink it" factor. I'm right there with Tom on this one.

  2. Kapao is located off Waxpool Road, in the same complex as Five Guys, V Restaurant & Bar, and a few other places. I've been meaning to write about them for a while, and I'm kind of glad I waited, as they just changed their menu.

They do both take-out and sit-down and it's kind of set up like many take-out joints - you order right at the front, and then there's an aisle to walk down by the side of the open kitchen, and you pick up your own silverware and fill your own drink if you eat in. I tend to go in a bit late, so there's never really been a line.

They're very big on being "fresh" and "natural". Whatever their marketing pitch is, I've become a huge fan of their food. It tastes much lighter than almost any other Asian food I've had in the area, even when it's something like their version of General Tso's chicken (General Kapao). You can pick a 1-5 rating of spiciness when you order. The last time I picked 3 it about killed me, but I think I'm ready to try it again.

It's a bit pricier than my other usual Asian sit-down place (I average under $10 before tip at Chin Chin Cafe down the street, and here it's usually just under $14) but to be honest, I feel better after eating here. It's good stuff.

  3. Pertinent to previous discussions, I'm hoisting a long delayed drink to Mr. Robin Williams. I haven't been able to write for a while, but hopefully this breaks that trend.

(That's my personal blog, and I'm hoping to update it more. If you want to remember the URL, you can also get to it via bigblackdildoesinc.com. No, I am not kidding.)

  4. I'd never claim those as good wines.

    I don't know wines.

On a night like this, when I need some booze: a $5.99 bottle of Rex Goliath Chardonnay followed by a $13.99 18-pack (no, I didn't drink the whole thing) of High Life.

With about a pound of Harris Teeter sushi.

Can that price be beaten for someone just tired, hot, and looking for a glass of wine?

  5. Two criteria, I think: something seasonal that works well with the weather and/or the food, and something that I would not make at home, due to the presence of a unique ingredient or process.  I'm not willing to pay $15 for a well-made whatever if I can mix one up at home.

I definitely agree with that. If you're a good cocktail bar, I know you can make a good martini, negroni, whiskey sour (which Erick Castro says is the best drink to order to see how good the bar is), etc...so show me stuff I haven't had before, or can't just whip up at home.

Sure, I do regularly order martinis, negronis, etc., at places like Passenger, but I don't need to see them listed on the menu.

  6. For me, one of the things that will get me to return to a bar is knowing that they have a variety of spirits. You don't need to have seventeen different Fernets and forty six rye whiskeys, but at least a bit of variety helps.

For instance, if all the drinks have syrups in them it makes it harder for me to order them (due to diabetes) and if all of them have citrus in them, it can lead to heartburn. If I can switch to a beer and a shot or something for a bit, I can return to the craft cocktails...

  7. Well, perhaps related.

We just walked in (though I'd texted my friend to confirm there was room) and sat at the bar. The "snacks" at the bar was an a la carte menu. Some of them, from what I understand, were the same as courses on the tasting menu. Drinks, of course, were a la carte, but for the most part we just let the bartenders try out things on us.

  8. A friend of mine started bartending here -- between that and a date last night, it was the perfect excuse to finally make my way over to Rogue 24 and try it out. We sat at the bar and had a great time with some great drinks. The "7 snacks for 2 people" was perfect for what we wanted, and all 7 were great.

I know that's not a lot of detail, but I'm glad I finally got over there. Now to see about getting there for a tasting menu...

  9. Hmmm, well, maybe it's something else. I never see ads on here, but also, if I'm Googling for anything I don't want my company to see, I do it in incognito mode. (I was annoyed when I was at a work event, opened up Chrome, and one of the tabs was from a discussion with a friend of mine that led to a rather salacious URL, retrieved over the company wireless as I was doing testing on the AP. Oops.)
