  1. Cantina (then Taco House) was the first restaurant we brought our infant daughter to, so we always felt a little sentimental about it. The staff cooed over her and were so kind. But we stopped going there a long time ago -- not consciously, it just fell off our radar, and we found ourselves going to Del Ray more often. The pity is that about 10 years ago there seemed to be some hope for 23rd Street as a few new restaurants opened up. But none of them lasted (I still feel a twinge of jealousy when I see Cafe Pizzaiolo in Alexandria). Enjera restaurant is the one place we'll still go to and not feel like it's just a decision made out of desperation. Now the strip has a pawn shop where Pizzaiolo used to be, Smokey Shope up the street, and two hookah bars. (How many hookah bars does one block need?)
  2. Cantina Mexicana on 23rd Street is now closed. A sign in the window thanks everyone for 40 years of business and encourages patrons to come to their location on Columbia Pike. That strip is looking worse and worse. It's such a wasted opportunity, and I really wish there were good restaurant options within walking distance.
  3. I did think of this, but my sister was already at a restaurant table. I kind of understood them not serving us at the table, for the reasons you gave, but I was surprised that I was not allowed to order two drinks at the bar and carry them away myself. It wasn't a big deal but just surprised us. Just to clarify - we didn't intend to order food from a happy hour menu. We ordered a normal dinner. We just thought a Pisco would be a nice thing to start the dinner.
  4. My sister and I went to China Chilcano for an early dinner before the theater. Because I had read this thread beforehand, I suggested we get there a bit before 6 to take advantage of Pisco Hour. When I arrived, my sister was sitting at a table in the restaurant and said she tried to order a Pisco Sour but was told that they couldn't serve the happy hour drink in the restaurant. I then went to the bar myself and ordered two of the drinks. But the bartender asked me if there was going to be someone else with me, and I said "yes" and pointed to my sister at the table. He said the happy hour price was for only the bar, not the whole restaurant. So I returned drinkless. We ordered a glass of wine each (a quite good rose) but no cocktails. We liked the food (I had the chicken stew), but the refusal of Pisco Hour put a damper on the dinner. It's a matter of expectations. We probably would have ordered cocktails if we hadn't known that people a few feet away were getting the same thing for less than half price. (And I should have told the waiter that we weren't sharing everything. Her selections came first and I had to wait a long time to get stew. If we'd intended to share, that would have been fine. I need to remember to tell the staff at Andres places when we need food at the same time. That's on me.) Question: Was I wrong to expect happy hour drinks prices while sitting in the restaurant rather than the bar? I've been to other restaurants with happy hour, and they serve you no matter where you are sitting.
  5. I was so saddened to read of Bill's death. I read his Grammar Geekery chat at the Post and appreciated his plain speaking and humor when explaining points of grammar and style. I'm an editor myself, and I often directed people to his blog, TheSlot. We'll miss you, Bill.
  6. Re: Grapes I'm not advocating for anyone, but to be fair to the original post from the parent -- the fruit cup with grapes was on the children's menu. That doesn't absolve a parent from being vigilant, but it does somewhat explain the writer's expectations.
  7. We've never had trouble parking since there's a garage right across the street. I think it was even free after a certain hour. Has it closed?
  8. Thanks TheMatt. We may end up just going back to Virginia. We have no dietary restrictions except the graduate doesn't like spicy.
  9. We'd like to go out to lunch after a graduation ceremony at DAR Constitution Hall on a Thursday in June. Is there anything you'd recommend that is within walking distance? If not, we'll head back to Arlington/Alexandria for something. There will probably be only 5 or 6 of us, so we have no need for special seating/dining room. What would make a nice celebration in the DAR area or near home?
  10. Yes, Hearthstone never "renovated," and the space is now occupied by Grill Kabob. ...well... Just what we need in the neighborhood - another kabob place. I like kabobs, but this makes four kabob restaurants in two blocks. Whyyyyy, Cafe Pizzaiolo, did you leave us? There is nothing worth walking to anymore.
  11. The National Archives has Hendrix's military service records. Here's a quote from Archives.gov: Hendrix's interest in guitar seems to have taken precedence over any commitment to military service. "Pvt Hendrix plays a musical instrument during his off duty hours, or so he says," declares one Sgt. Louis Hoekstra. "This is one of his faults, because his mind apparently cannot function while performing duties and thinking about his guitar." A training record from July 1961 shows Hendrix at the bottom of the heap in marksmanship"”ranked 36th out of a group of 36. While he may have been right on the mark with a guitar, with a rifle he was not even close. (http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2006/spring/vips-military.html) And his enlistment questionnaire: http://go.usa.gov/Au5F
  12. A very informative review, but I need to comment on one sentence: "We were then asked if we wanted to tour the kitchen, which the chef offers to everyone." I've been to the Inn three times over the years and never was asked if my party wanted to tour the kitchen, so I don't think the phrase "offers to everyone" is accurate. The last time I was there was several years ago, however, so the policy may have changed.
  13. Restaurant Eve's customer service is admirable. Earlier this month, my husband and daughter brought me to Eve for my birthday, which is always a delight. We've gone only for special occasions and know that we'll have a wonderful dinner each time. When we got home this time, I was disappointed when I realized I hadn't received a bag of scone mix, as I had in the past. I first checked this forum to find out if the practice continued and found out it did. The next day, I called the restaurant to verify if they still had scone mix, and the woman on the telephone couldn't have been nicer. She apologized, took my address, and mailed me a bag. I was willing to drop by sometime and was surprised that she'd send it. (This also made up for an unusual mixup with our cocktails at dinner. They had not arrived by the time our first course was served, and when I asked our waiter if they were coming, he was mortified. He found out that they had been delivered to another table, and the people there had not said anything. By that time I wanted wine instead of a cocktail. Oh well, I'll have to try the gingery cocktail another time.)
  14. I thought I'd never get the chance to try this place because I really hate waiting in line. However, my friends gave me a birthday surprise when they treated me to dinner on a recent Friday night. Two friends got in line at 4:30, and I joined them shortly after 5, and we were in the first bunch to be seated. We had a great time, and everything was delicious. But . . . my main question is still unanswered, and maybe someone here can answer it. What noun should follow "Rose's Luxury"? Or is Luxury working as a noun? The name has always puzzled me.
